Opinion time please!

Par for the course I'm afraid. Cars sell themselves nowadays and they know it, you are very much in the minority so why bother serving you. Most people don't even test drive first let alone ask questions / compare multiple cars.

Lol. I think it's the urge to have something I can tinker with.

You really can't beat a Mustang for tinkering, just remember if your going MY18 make sure its got the magnetic ride control, its game changing and fixes all the issues the passive frankly cheap nasty suspension has which is extremely hard to fix in the aftermarket.

Will add though that I had my partners car in at Mercedes Newcastle for some work and had quite frankly the best customer service I've ever had. Their service and parts departments are outstanding.

If you were interested in M5s, have you thought about looking at an E63S?

Post 2018 and magneride are 2 essentials. Reason I'm after the Bullitt is it has the air intake system from the 350. Otherwise its something I'd just buy anyways.

I did the full 350 intake setup in mine and 8000rpm map and I then went back to stock air box and a custom tune and the latter drove better so in hindsight the stock IM and air box with some basic mods and a proper custom tube for super unleaded is best value for money. I’d not do the 350 setup again but I was one of first so the tunes are probably better now though the MY18 has a revised IM which in testing proved as good as the 350 so save your money as Ford did a great job out the box on the newer cars if anything just change exhaust manifolds and get a custom map.

exactly, a Mustang is FAR better for tinkering with than a Merc plus you can't get much for a Merc anyway, except new rims and a remap.
i'm looking for another car too, well i keep thinking about it anyway but i'm more likely to start by buying an engine first and find something to put it in later on........i love the Merc but i'm looking for a project to work on, i must try and fight this urge though.

Bump - so i gather from the other thread that this resulted in a Mustang right? @Dis86 how is it?

Thought I'd continue a similar discussion here instead of a new thread. I'm in a similar spot at the moment. I'm looking to scratch that "sports car" itch at up to 75k before having-any-kids-and-petrol-cars-disappear but I'm still very indecisive. I'm fully expecting it to be a money lost activity and very likely short term but I don't want to look back regretting not trying it out.

The ever changing shortlist so far is:
  • Jaguar F-Type: V6 / V8
    • Test driven a V6S and was a tad underwelmed with noise, speed. The interior / infotainment also felt dated
    • P450 V8 has moved into the budget and might have enough extra power, nice noise and updated infotainment to be more appealing
    • R / SVRs also can be found in the budget but likely with the older styling
  • Audi TTRS
    • Bit of a straight line rocket and nice 5 pot noise but probably least appealing to me at the moment (hairdresser car etc)
    • Not test driven yet but most reviews quote the same old quattro understeer meh-ness
  • Audi RS3
    • Newest model sounds like the most engaging to drive but seem super expensive for what they are
    • Least "sports car" of the list, and I already have had a hot hatch for a while (Golf GTI)
  • Porsche Cayman - S, GTS
    • I've driven many varients (987 S, 981 S, 981 GT4) and really enjoyed out dialled in Porsches are in general
    • Older models seem silly prices for what they are now
    • The ideal car in my mind is a GTS 4.0 but they currently land just out side the budget
  • Porsche 911 - 991 something
    • Also had the pleasure of driving a few variants inc 991 GT3
    • I think this would be the go to with a bit more budget - it may end up being a higher mileage car
  • BMW M2 / M2C
    • Test drove a M2C last year and it had some excitement but I think I'd really want to try a manual one
    • More practical than the 2seaters
  • Ford Mustang
    • To be honest, I have mostly dismissed this option as over many years of work trips to the US, I often had a Mustang as a hire car. The GT ones I had were a little fun at first but quickly became obvious on the lack of build quality and the sheer number of them on the roads there made it seem pretty meh. Also seems a bit too long (we have a short driveway)
    • I'll need to get a test drive in a decent spec UK one to try and change that opinion
Other random "ideal" requirements:
  • Drive way is quite short, car would need to not be too much more than 4.6m in length
  • Ideally would have fairly up to date infotainment system or at least Apple CarPlay compatible
Maybe I need to do some more research on the Lexus LC 500? (not something that's really come across my radar before)

@shiver it's great. I'll be utterly blunt, it's nowhere the handling or quality of a porsche, it doesn't have the quality or composure of something like an m5 however I do honestly prefer it to the m3s and m2s I've driven.
I'd love to comment on a jag but I received absolutely no customer service at all from them, even to the extent where I complained and to this date haven't received a response to my complaint. They are shambolic.
Had no interest in an audi but an s5 owner friend of mine loved the mustang. The interior quality isn't quite to the same level but he certainly preferred the handling and power application.

As for the mustang, it's got extended leather due to it being the Bullitt but there's still a lot of hard plastics. I've removed most interior panels and felt lined and padded them which has got rid of all rattles apart from one behind the dash on rough roads. The leather on the seats and trim is clearly a downgrade from the porsche but is still not bad. Love the feel of the switches on the centre console but the usual buttons, dials and toggles are again hard plastics.
However none of that matters because it sounds ******* fantastic. The exhaust note at all speeds is beautiful, the favt that you can also easily adapt it is nice as it means you can remain friends with your neighbours. The clutch feel sucks until you change the return spring at which point its spot on with a nice smooth gearbox. Power application and progression is just hilariously fun. It steers and holds the road surprisingly well for a bit of a chonk, I know that this can be improved even further with some simple bolt on mods and by putting it on a diet. However that's not something you absolutely need to do as on mp4s it really is good.

My local Ford dealership have been very good and put porsche in second place, they make bmw look like amateurs. Well, bmw did that themselves tbh.

21mpg kinda sucks though :p

I think we need to hear this V8 on a cold start. Cue V8 sound off

Btw I’m currently averaging 16mpg to/from work and it’s not like I’m attempting the Kessel run either :(

Sounds like a lot of customisation, got any pictures of the results?

I was surprised to see 2015-2016 Merc AMG GT S examples are now in my price range too. Anyone had a decent go in one of them? They sound glorious

i can never remember which one @Housey has, in terms of merc AMG, but his is just beautiful !

981 GT4 / 991 Carrera T
718 GTS (don’t discount the 2.5T entirely it’s properly quick, especially with a remap)

It really depends how much you value sharpness over muscle. SVR / AMG GT if you want muscle imo, porker for sports car.
