Opinions on HP ProLiant ML115 G5

I bought one with crucial 8gb ram.

I bought it for vmware but:

ML115G with ESXi - SATA recognised for VMFS but poor performance
ML115G with ESX - SATA recognised after hack and great performance, but causes SCSI errors and eventually hangs ...

SO mine is a door stopper at the moment.

I've had no problems or performace issues running both ESX 3.5 and ESXi you must have set something wrong mate

Just to confirm, you've got the HP ML115 G5 AMD Quad Core working with ESX 3.5 Update 3?

I can't get the thing to work.

Also being discuss here - http://communities.vmware.com/message/1151473#1151473

Any tips\pointers?

I see you have the HP ProLiant ML110 which works well. There seems to be an issue with the ML115 G5 Sata Controller when using it with ESX\ESXi.

I've been pointed in this direction from another thread where I had questions about a server to run Windows home server

Im looking at maybe this model, but I have a few questions

First thing I would need to do is upgrade the PSU as I want to fill it with drives, I have seen some people who have had problems with this - can I fit a standard ATx PSU?

Next question
there are two models 1 with 4 x SATA and one with 8 x SAS ports
I read somewhere that these can be compatable - can I run SATA drives off the 8 port SAS controller?

Im going to have a browse around the HP site as Im looking for something I can load up with SATA drives and use for online storage

Form factor says Micro ATX Tower with 365W PSU

You can run SATA drives off a SAS controller, but not SAS drives of a SATA controller

HP Specs and details here

Hope that helps

I shouldn't think you'll need to bother. I have 4 x 500GB SATA150 drives in mine (ML115G5) and it's never missed a beat. Maybe if you're also planning to put a decent 3D graphics card in then you might have to upgrade. The drives I have are not the latest generation either so the latest drives should be more power efficent too.

Someone says it's MicroATX but it looks like standard ATX to me but the mounting holes are not in the standard place.

I'd try the drives first, see how you go, I'm fairly certain you won't need to spend any more money.

These do look like great machines. I'm thinking of recommending it as a File Server for a hospital radio station I volunteer at. (with 2x1TB drives in RAID1). Since prices are fluctuating so wildly on these things, how much would you expect to be paying for the ML115 (Quad-Opteron) system today?

Would any of you hazard a guess as to what you would expect these things to cost in about a months time (it's slow getting anything ordered when dealing with a charity!) i.e. do you expect the price to rise anymore?

And finally, as I'm hammering you all with questions here... at the current price, is this still value for money? (it seems to me that it is!)

I realise that's a lot of questions, so if you do answer.. then thanks!

Hi, looking for one of these HP ProLiant ML115 G5 as cheap as possible, can anyone let me know where has stock at a decent price please, thank you. :)

No-one can tell you, it's against the rules. Suffice to say Google is your friend :)

I've seen prices from as low as £118 to £350+ on various sites. Quite a few are still selling them for £165ish.

As you have mentioned earlier, prices can fluctuate wildly depending on wether HP has a offer running or not. Without the offer, they are £350+ and with the falling value of the £, the prices are likely to creep up a bit more.

And finally, as I'm hammering you all with questions here... at the current price, is this still value for money? (it seems to me that it is!)

If you can find a place selling it for £130ish and in stock then its incredible value considering you are getting a entire server with quad core processing. I personally wouldn't hesitate to press the order button on the websites selling them for £165ish.

I realise that's a lot of questions, so if you do answer.. then thanks!

Hope I have helped!

I cant find anywhere with stock at that kind of money.

If you find somewhere advertising that price then snap their hand off ;)

has anyoen got the onboard raid controller working in Vmware ESXi.

Im running the latest version off usb internal port and its working sweet apart from the driver for the internal raid adaptor.

i have a nice raid 5 i want to use as storage but it wont see it.

Hope I have helped!

Thanks for that. I'm thinking that I might pick one up for myself if I can find one sub-£200 as a nice file server for home. I hope they're quiet!

Even at £350 I'm going to recommend it to the hospital radio station, it seems like a great bit of kit.

Cheers!
