Opinions on HP ProLiant ML115 G5

I would like to try out OpenSolaris and run RAID-Z, but the Nvidia chip set won't allow an install, even though this was supposed to have been sorted. Anybody got OpenSolaris/ZFS running on it?

I have OpenSolaris on mine at that moment with two 1.5TB Seagates and 8GB of OCZ. I turned off the raid settings in the BIOS and set them to (if I recall correctly) SATA. Then installed OpenSolaris and made a zpool.

OK, thats good to know. I'll have another go at some stage. Thanks for the info

What sort of price are these going for now or are there any better alternatives? Need to get some more time in with ESX / Exchange / lots of other stuff. Ta

There's a big difference between installing ESXi and ESX. I've managed to get ESXi installed using the USB method. Doing a VMware Infrastructure Course, ESX is much more powerful as it has the Service console. There's a lot of extra functionality and customisation ESX offers over ESXi and wanting to use Virtual Centre too, ESX is better paired with it.

And i cannot get ESX update 3 to install on my ML115 G5 even using some of the scripts on vmware forums.

ow, prices have hiked!
never mind, I got made redundant from that job where they wouldn't buy a server!

Hi,

I now wish i hadn't returned one of the two ML115 G5 i bought for £155 from insight. Oh Well!!!!

I finally managed to get Vmware ESXi update 3 installed using the USB Stick Method but have also installed Vmware VI 2.5 in a VM on the ESXi Host to managed to Host, create Templates and setup Alerts and Alarms.

Now that Citrix XenServer 5.0 is free, anyone tried this out on the ML115 G5 and how does it compare to Vmware ESXi in creating VMs, templates, Alerts etc.

Just found one at a decent price

Works fine or at least it did for me, also true the new version of Virtual Iron.

That's dual core not quad core ?

The quad core Intel ML110 G5 seemed to be only available as a 'build-to-order' option so I don't think we'll ever see it offered with a big discount.

The quad core Opteron ML115 G5 is a standard config as is the dual core model, so distributors are presumably being offered incentives (from time to time) to shift inventory of these by HP.

Thanks - presumably then they shifted a large enough volume, because the prices went back up :(

Rising costs in logistics and manufacture have pushed them up as well as the weak pound, Id never have thought it would have went from as low as 99 quid to 350 with another £50 rise threatening.

I've been eying up one of these, can't find anywhere cheaper than £180 for the Dual core 115 Xeon, and over £350 for the quad core Opteron.

Will keep looking for a good deal, so annoying we can't post links!
