Opinions on HP ProLiant ML115 G5

Thanks to the op for the heads up, I was reading about vmware and thought that playing with the esxi server might be fun then stumbled on this thread so orderd the ml115 quad opteron last night at £199.

Checked the same site this morning and the price was back up at £350, checked this afternoon and its at £210, some strange fluctuations. They had 190 last night and as of this post they seem to be selling quick 96 left now.

Ordered. Silly not to at that price. It can be my recording studio PC, which frees up the current one (Q6600 based) to be my gaming rig.

True, if you costed it out:
AMD Opteron 1352 QC - £100 (roughly everywhere)
1GB ECC - £30
MB - £65
Decent Case - £50
DVDROM - £15
160GB SATA drive - £30?
(Keyboard and mouse - if it comes with them) - £20

All in all £310 worth of kit for £195 - can't be a bad deal can it?!

Though you've got to lol at their description

Processor 1 x Intel® AMD Opteron™ 1352 Quad Core 2.10GHz, 800MHz FSB

Okay think I'm going to take the plunge and get one of these to replace my Dev box.

Could anyone tell me if this would be okay
I want to add 2X Sammy 64GB SSD's in RAID 0, with a 9800GTX+ primarily for CUDA development work. Would the PSU cope? I'll drop out the SATA drive and connect to my NAS. And I'll be using 4GB ECC (no memory errors accepted here!.

Has anyone recieved one of these at 200 quid? It seems like a mistake, as they have another one with half the ram and a slightly bigger HD for twice the price...

Following this thread it looks like the prices on these things go up and down more than Jordan's knickers so perhaps it's just a "getting close to discontinuing" model or something?

Yes these Opterons are old technology now. But they are still nice processors. Just placed my order ;)

Well mine arrived today payed £200 for it :)

I think some folk earlier in the thread got it for even less.

It had changed to £210 by the time I ordered mine, oh well it is still a bargain. When I look at how much my 2 socket Quad Opteron box from 3 yrs ago cost, with 2 x Dual Core Opteron 265s... I think those CPUs alone were £250 each and they were the bottom of the range. But they overclock nicely to 275 speeds.

Mine has arrived :)

And it *is* tiny !! Much smaller than expected, smallest machine I have. Amazing machine. And it does come with the beautiful HP keyboard. We have them at work, love 'em.
Very happy indeed. But yet to fire it up of course
