Opinions on HP ProLiant ML115 G5

Just ordered one of these at £199 + Delivery. Couldn't not really.

Indeed ;)

I've got plenty of DDR2 RAM sitting here unused, and I can grab a drive from another machine that isn't really being used in there, so I can upgrade the spec at no cost. Can't wait to fire it up and start using it

Was messing about with mine yesterday, although xp isnt supported it installs and you can get video and lan with the 2003 drivers, not sure how stable it would be.

Like others im going to mess about with vmware esxi on mine, there is a guide for installing it onto a usb pen here -

http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2008/07/29/esxi-35-update-2-on-a-usb-memory-key/
or

And the rest of the install is shown on this guide -

No reason why it shouldn't be stable. I may try XP 64-bit on it, the Server 2003 drivers should work. However my main purpose is to try this with Linux

Mind your earplugs on power up :)

lol - yes I saw the posts about that. My 3 yr old Quad Opteron (ASUS K8N-DL server board and 2 x Opteron 265s) is the same. All fans at maximum when you hit the power switch, but they slow down a few seconds later. Still haven't switched on the new one yet

What do we know about the Opteron 1352 CPU ? It is a quad core, and as such it is presumably a first generation Phenom, rebranded as Opteron for the server market ? Does it suffer from that tlb bug thing ? Off to do some googling as well :D
EDIT: found on Wikipedia: "B3" stepping Phenom processors were released March 27, 2008 without the TLB bug and with "xx50" model numbers. I believe all 1352s are B3

I bought mine as a replacement for my recording studio PC. It arrived at the office today and I just powered it up- Jesus, I'm surprised the thing doesn't propel itself across the desk! Was just about to re-think the whole plan when it all settled down to a very quiet hum after 30 seconds or so, quieter than my current studio PC (NZXT hush case).

:D:D That joy still awaits me

What O/S will you run on it ?

lol - totally insane !! It sounds like a high powered vacuum cleaner, and that's the truth ! :D:D But after 10-20 secs it quietens down to a very acceptable low noise level. I can only assume though that in a very hot climate the rear fan would spin up again, you wouldn't want to go there... If your machine is on 24/7 it isn't an issue, and even if it is not, well it isn't too annoying

Back to work, will resume working with the machine later. Just couldn't resist turning it on, at least to make sure it wasn't DOA.

How the heck do you unscrew that funny thumbscrew thing to get the side panel off ?? Grr

EDIT: OK, got it off. Installed 4 x 1GB Crucial Ballistix in there, running memtest to see if it likes it. Memtest says timings 5-3-3-15 which is odd, but hey.

I fitted 4 x 1GB Crucial Ballistix in there and left memtest overnight. On the 5th pass there were 2 errors. I figured it may not be a good match, but was willing to give it a go. I'll remove it and put 2 x 2GB of OCZ in there that I also have, and see how that goes. Although if the board sets the same 5-3-3-15 timings that it did with the Crucial (at least that is what memtest showed, may not be right) then the OCZ is rated 5-5-5-15 so no guarantees with it either

There were MLs out there a month or so back which were coming with iLo 100c :)

Not quite.

HP had a promotion from roughly July to November last year whereby they would credit 100% of the iLOM card cost (exc. VAT).

You had to buy it up front and it had to be listed on the same invoice as the ML110/ML115. You then mailed in a form and a copy of the invoice.

I wish the promo would return, they're damned useful if you put the box somewhere you don't have convenient access to (loft/garage).
