Opinions on HP ProLiant ML115 G5

I think the lights out card is a bit OTT for most standard desktop users (though must admit it'd be a nice to have)

It's quite ammusing to see you all craming your new servers with non-ECC memory, at this price point the fact it accepts is one of it's major plus points! lets just all hope you machines never end up as part of a cluster doing anything remotely numerical!

Well I just happen to have a lot of non-ECC DDR2 lying around. It is good enough for what I want to use the machine for. If I can't get non-ECC stuff to work then I'll buy some Crucial ECC, it is cheap enough. Or else the supplied 1GB ECC may well be enough for say XUbuntu.

Got 2 x 2GB of the OCZ in there, and memtest says 5-5-5-15 which is exactly as per spec, so I'm 99.9% sure this will be fine. Presumably on this board 2 sticks go in the same colour slots ? I have them in 2 black slots.

With Kingston 2Gb ECC RAM available for sub £40.00 a stick including delivery and VAT, why buy anything else?

Becuase I have 12GB of DDR2 RAM sitting here, which is absolutely *FREE*

The OCZ works perfectly, memtest ran for 12 hrs error free. The board could read the SPD on this OCZ memory perfectly, whereas for some reason it had trouble with the Crucial Ballistix.

Just to let you all know my mate has just purchased a DELL Perc Raid card for his ML115 Quad and its working fine with ESXi

Dell Perc...in an HP? thought compatibility with these things was very tightly tied to the manufacturer

Hi I was wondering if anyone who has bought one of these can advise, how many PCI and PCIe slots does this machine have? Just bought one and trying to get a better idea of what all I need to spec it out as I want.

I know it doesn't have sound, which isn't a major issue but I assume it doesn't have wireless either which means I would need a wireless pci card.

Thanks

Thanks Chaos, I've just read throught the whole thread and learned a lot. Apologies for not using the search function before posting silly questions.

This is my first venture into 64bit comp, running a server and I'm still not 100% about virtulisation but hey I am reasonably techie so I'll just go with the flow. Got the important things, bought 2x2GB ram chips, got my copy of server 2008, esx and going to look at running XP as well.

Can I ask when running OS's in a virtual environment would all of them be running concorrently rather than a dual OS machine where it is one or another? The other thing ins once I have ESXunning is it possible to install OS X as my OH was wanting to try a mac out. Thanks

Yeah you can run them concurrent as many as your hardware permits, you can turn each virtual machine on/off

Here is an overview of esxi -

Thanks Chaos this was much appreciated. Another question if I might?

- Can you run any OS from ESXi e.g. a version of XP or something to allow programs to be installed which are not complaint to a 64bit OS?
- The other question is can the entire install be done remotely from another PC or does it require a screen connected to it for initial set up?

Thanks

-So long as it's supported you can run any OS. 32 bit or 64 bit it doesnt really matter
-You'll need a screen and keyboard to install ESX but you NEED to use another machine to install the OSs on top

Finally got an Ml115g5 today £161.51 delivered

now running Vista x64 ultimate and 8gb of kingston ram, and a pcie hd2600 pro all in all very happy.

It was the 470065-018 model (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/e...1-241434-3328424-3328424-3683705-3919424.html), not as good as the earlier ones spec wise but no complaints here...

I can't get it online yet, need a driver for the Embedded NC105i PCI -Express Gigabit Server Adapter suitable for vista 64, any suggestions? thanks.
