Ugh getting sick of Protoss BS. Even if you get in there with a stim timing you're still cut in half by any Toss that's half decent with force fields.

IMBA.

You guys want the definition of cheese? Protoss

:p

I played this ages ago (I was even in the beta right from the beginning) but I had a few problems with it:

1. I got sick of protoss.

2. I was terrible at it.

3. I was stuck in bronze league.

I've looked around for information on how to play SC2 properly, but I really can't find anything. Do people have any guides etc for a complete newb, something that might get me out of the frustrating ditch of constantly losing? I'll be switching to Zerg, I think. I like the general style of Zerg. Protoss is a boring as hell.

You might actually like Terran. As a Terran you pretty much always have to be the one on the offensive for most of the game, doing pressure, drops etc. It's tough to multitask for anyone below high masters, but it does make the race very fun to play. Also Terran has the most oppurtunity for micro, as well as rewarding good micro the most out of all the races. The funnest thing in SC2 in my opinion is microing like a boss and winning a fight you'd have lost if you hadn't microed well. Zerg is cool too though. If I one day switched race it would definitely be to them. None of that protoss scum.

I was watching Meany (GM Terran player) the other day. He went up against a toss who went forge first FE, into 4-gates 2-robo. He got 2 observers as his collossi tech was finishing, then chronoed out infinite collossi off 2 base, while spending the rest of his money on a single forge and the 4 gates. It was the most imba thing I've ever seen. Meany's first push was fended off with a couple of sentries and the first colossus. He tried a couple of drops and traded fairly evenly with them. But then his next main push into the natural.... he sees 2 colossi and engages, then no less than 4 more colossi come out of the fog of war and rip his army to shreds. In the stream chat no-one could believe he got that many colossi so fast. If I was a protoss player I'd do no build other than that. Pretty much zero skill required to execute.

I am just getting back into SC after quite a long break.
Starting from bronze again, and I just try and ignore really bad cheese games.
Those players that are playing cheesy all ins are not improving, and are not going to be in the higher leagues.

Practice and getting better at defensive play will eventually beat cheesy play, especially those stupid cheesy all ins.

PvP is probably the worst for cheese, SheepBeast gave good advice on how to beat them. Unfortunately although I found that crappy cheeses tend to fall away with higher leagues, PvP is still fairly bad, the temptation is to start cheesing PvP yourself, this isn't a great idea, you don't improve by cheesing.
I play terran now, but when I was playing protoss I just assumed I was getting cheesed in PvP and played defensive macro every game.

Great to see someone picking up the game again, hope you stick around :) There are a lot of awesome Bnet features on the way in the next few months (unranked ladder, cross region play, multilanguage support, clan support, party replay watching and i think one other which i forgot) so SC2 will soon be even more awesome.

You're correct to an extent about cheesy players. Most of them are tryhards who only enjoy the game when they win, and want to do so with the minimum amount of effort. Most of them will never get past Gold. The best way to practice IMO is to have a solid macro build (1 rax FE) which works ok in all matchups and at least one 1 base cheesy build (1/1/1 in TvP for example). This gives experience of more varied games and practice across the board rather than just at pure macro. Also they'll both still be viable no matter how hgih up the ladder you climb.

I received a few replays off a friend today whose in GM as Terran. I asked him for some of him winning TvPs just so I could see maybe what I was doing wrong.

In one of them it was on Shakuras Plateau and he has 5 bases vs 2 (Killed the third twice) and he'd wiped out the toss's army twice but lost too much to continue pushing against probes. The Toss turtles till storm and came out with a small deathball and 5 HTs. Stormed his army and they was dead within 5 seconds, gone in the blink of an eye.

He just said "HOW THE **** AM I SUPPOSED TO BEAT THAT?" and left. I couldn't stop laughing that even he couldn't beat them.

He had a few ghosts aswell and EMP'd most of the HTs but 1 can put out like 2 storms. His army got forcefield'd into a cubby so he couldn't split aswell.

Really impressive video of storm dodging: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMAfBWrVyMM

Dragon's become one of my favourite players :).

@ Kamwah.... have you tried buying reapers instead of marines once your gas starts building up? And also, getting a LOT of ghosts (like 10-20). I see a lot of players get no more than 3 or 4 ghosts late game which is a really bad idea. Ghosts are amazing for the AOE damage and also they do very good damage to zealots with their standard attack (better dps than 2 marines which would be the same supply). They're also much tankier than marines so storms aren't so devestating. The same goes for reapers, they have more health and massacre light units. Your marauders can deal with everything else.

With that many ghosts, you have surplus EMPs so you can add 2-3 thors to your army and EMP them before an engagement. Scan and they'll snipe off the observer, so you can cloak your ghosts and pew pew with impunity.

I've never personally tried the reaper strat but I've seen it suggested a few times. Next time I play SC2 (only 4 days til my last uni exam :D) I'm gonna give it a whirl.

I think Reapers would be really gimmicky and they have quite a bad range and only 5 extra health.

Mass Ghosts is really good and the only way IMO to win atm against lategame Protoss. I have no idea why they've made it this way though because they nerfed Snipe because it was the same way in TvZ.

It's best to switch to Ghost production instead of Marauders at some point. It's the way IMHappy does it frequently on his stream. Then have vikings for the observer/collosi and Marines kill anything.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdwEopWN7WI&feature=relmfu another amazing video.

You might be right about reapers. They'd open up the possibility of some sick harass and tech sniping though.

There used to be a sly tech-switch to 6-8 speed reaper which was really popular in the beta because of how the speed upgrade and production time was a lot lower than it is now (Stupid Terran nerfs). The aim of it was to go in lategame with 3-3 upgrades and destroy all the pylons in the main and snipe important tech structures like the Templar Archives.

It's still used sometimes, last time I saw it was in one game of IPL Tac2. It worked quite well.

:: O yea forgot to add. Dragon is a player I frequently watch because he streams a lot. Unfortunately he's not good enough to be a pro atm and needs to practice a lot more. I also preferred it when he was in Slayers just because I hate Stephano.
If you lookup his trolls on ladder while streaming some of them are hilarious.

Yeah dragons stream is always really fun to watch, just wish he played better in tourneys, one of my favourite terrans, really like lucifron aswell been watching his stream lately, and illusions pretty good. There was another person i watched a few days ago but i cannot remember his name and its annoying me :/ was a good terran player.

Any high diamond or low masters Terrans want to pratice? I got a new build I want to start using also need to learn to deal with drop plays etc... Im top 25diamond Z btw.

Yeah I am going from the ground up with Terran, really working on building up my mechanics as I was never that good a Protoss.

I agree, need to have a decent set of builds for all situations, although at this stage I am totally ignoring learning things like 1/1/1. I don't feel they teach me anything about playing Terran the way I want to play them.

Meany is a brilliant player to watch. He's not pro-level but he's definitely mid-GM were he to play on the NA server. He's Korean but speaks fluent English and does a lot of commentating and talking on his stream. He's also hilarious :)

That sounds pretty cool I'll give it a try. It's not like I can use my gas for anything else in a TvP -_-

Fair enough :). I just wheel out the 1/1/1 when I get several losses in a row to Protoss and I feel like getting a cheap win to cheer myself up. This happens quite often because I lose 80% of TvPs that go past 15mins.

I'd be up for it in a week or so when I'm done with exams. What's your name & character code, I'll add you. I'm a mid-diamond Terran atm but I'm going to start playing a lot after exams so should advance to high dia/low masters fairly quickly.

I'm really starting to get the starcraft itch back, I just don't have the time needed to improve :(.

Is there a release date for heart of the swarm yet?

Oh, I can totally understand that, when I was Protoss I would get annoyed with 10 PvP losses in a row and do some icky all-in just to make myself feel better.
Always made me feel a bit dirty though.

Animal.711 i think :). that will be cool man, i can lose to plat terrans easily, if they drop me a fall to pieces so quick.

******* :p

I've been getting itches to play for the past few weeks, must resist for another month :(

:D.... don't be too jealous though, I failed all of my exams last semester due to playing CoD all day every day, so I have 4 resits in August and I have to pass them all otherwise I'm going to be kicked off my course. My "summer holiday" is going to consist of 2 weeks or starcraft/max payne 3 then studying for my resist for the following 11 weeks. Then maybe 2 weeks after my resits before term starts again. :(

Probably December this year I would imagine. But as Kamwah said, we don't really know for sure.

Lol yeah. It's funny how I "take it out" on the next protoss I face just because of his race, despite the actions of the previous few toss players being no fault of his. I used to feel a little guilty about it but not anymore since this one time. I had faced 3 toss players in a row all of which had BMed me so I 1/1/1ed them. The next player was also toss but he was friendly at the start so i said "you're friendly so I won't 1/1/1 you :D". He said "ah thanks, really fed up of that today, I won't chees you either :)". I took him at his word.... a couple of mins later two proxy'd void rays turn up in base.

That was the last time I felt any kind of remorse or kinship with protoss players. It's been compounded lately with my loss vs a cannon rusher (which I posted about in this thread). There is no going back now. They are all scum
