**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Hi all,

I see Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm are on sale @ £17.00 - question is... if I am only going to play multiplayer, what is the difference? Should I be getting both, or is 1 enough (if so, which one?)

well after sitting on the fence for this for a long time (tend to be a console player) I thought I would get the £34 deal on battle.net (more of an impulse buy than anything)

I have been using twitch a lot recently and was looking at the dreamhack sc2 streams and the game looked right up my street. Plus I think it is probably one of the few modernish games that would play pretty decently on my pc.

So far about 10 missions in on the single player (wings of liberty campaign) and really enjoying it.

Not sure I will play this online (I suspect I would lose a lot and get frustrated) but as a single player experience it gives me that warm fuzzy feeling I got when I played the likes of C&C back in the day.

You can get a trial and play multiplayer to see if you like it. Wings of Liberty (WOL) is the initial game, Heart of the Swarm (HotS) is an expansion.
Got WoL if you like it, get HotS.

@davetherave2, get online after you play the single player, go in and lose, lose all the matches in the placement rounds and then play for fun and to get better instead of winning, makes it a much more fun game.

It's the multiplayer that makes this game awesome.

Once you've settled in (this will take a while), play against AI for a while, and when you've got yourself comfortable working through the tiers etc. Then jump into some 4v4 games and have some fun. Then eventually if you want to enjoy the game at it's best, and when you're ready to, you can go for some 1v1 games (where the game really gets exciting).

You'll really miss out if you don't eventually go into pvp games.

I've just got WoL and I'm working my way through the campaign.

I'm enjoying it way more than I thought I would though the resource management and working out what you should be using when isn't always easy.

I like the way the campaign gradually introduces new units so you can get the hang of them and gets you used to the idea of simultaneously having to attack and defend your base.

I'm not quite ready for PvP I think yet :D

For the multiplayer side of things are there any good resources to help with understanding the tactics a bit more and then following on from that servers that are good for newbies.

Yeah there are, if you hit up YT and look for a race specific tutorial there will be loads. As a player this is what you want to do:

Get comfortable in a race.
Find a build that is very plain and practise it on custom maps with AI.
Play that thing inside out, learn keys, grouping, and always be hitting a time where you have the same amount of army/workers as the tutorial.
Hit the ladder and play that same build, lose/win, it don't matter.
Play it again. Get comfortable with it.
Keep playing the same, forget winning.
Before you know it APM has jumped 20, 30, 50.
Then go back and look at fresher/newer replays on YT.

As for what you want to be doing:
Always concentrate on your game, do not slip, don't cut, don't get greedy. -priority.
Once you have that under control, figure out what they are doing, or rather what can they be doing. It takes a lot of understanding of timing, resource of the other race, i.e. he's on 4 gas but you only see mineral tech, prepare for a heavy assault of high tech units, or learn to push out before he has the tech tree completed.

Most of all, watch your replays, be hard on yourself, did you constantly make workers? did you let the scout die without controlling it? Look for those things and fix it next game.

When WoL started I was plat, then I was gold, now I'm silver but this is mostly because I hardly get to play in a rhythm due to having a young kid. Practise and understand, and learn from mistakes. I'm almost the bottom of the scale and giving advice but there won't be many around to say I'm telling you incorrect skills to learn.

this should help out a bit, and best of luck to you:

SC2 multiplayer is where it is at. I have had a bit of a break at the moment, playing a few other games. But still watching tournaments and streams, I am in no doubt that I will pick it back up and get some ladder seasons under my belt again!

There is nothing more satisfying than playing another person and winning in the 1v1 ladder. But it can also be highly frustrating, that is the beauty of the game mind :)

One of the best value for money games I have ever bought. Only Half Life has beaten it so far!

Thanks for this info. I will definitely have a look when I have the time to look at mp more seriously.

Would love to play some more arcade games with OcUK peeps.

Join OcUK chat channel in game. Used to have a blast playing with 5-10 regulars last year or before. Ranked 4v4 into Trollobattles/phonton-cycles with skype.

Any oldies still around here?

There is an OcUK channel? I might have a look on there next time I'm on. I'm pretty bad, silver/gold league 1vs1* and seldom got time to play, but still would be good to play a few games, competitive or arcade, I'm not bothered.

*not playing much and MMR decay means I'm currently in bronze, which is less than fun. Hope MMR decay dies/is severely reduced soon as I don't play enough to balance it out even though I'm winning almost all my games with ease.

If you're gold then sitting in bronze shouldn't be too much of a problem and you'll soon get out of it. I've been pretty active for the past 2 months and not seen a single soul in OcUK chat :(

Anyone played Starbow? Looks like fun as I've never played Sc1 online.
