OS X 10.7 (Lion) GM Released

I just put Lion on USB drive, booted into it, deleted the old partition and created a new one before installing Lion. :) So yeah, a fresh install can be done with the GM.

How do you put it onto a USB drive? I recall that is was a tricky process, although I may be thinking about installing Windows from USB for bootcamp.

Oh, didn't realise it was 64bit only!

I need to check if my MB will be ok! 2008 ali body with a 2.4 c2d if anybody knows...

It will be 64 bit, my macbook around 5 or 6 years old now and the next model after was 64bit...

It looks like I'll be sticking with 10.6 for now then.... :/

Hmm...although I've just done some reading up on it, looks like it is :)

Side note - GM is installing :)

Interesting that its running off the disk and its still downloading some additional stuff from the net.

Hahaha, as I thought then. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, just wondered if some of you folks were developers or something.

Why what did you think?

If you want server options you need to install them...

Indeed - I still find it impressive...

It's better than Snow Leopard in every way, has a considerable amount of new features, runs faster, installs quicker....yet its over 2gb smaller than SL!!

A seriously refined bit of coding right there :)

My installation did seem to take a fair bit of time if I am honest, must have been atleast an hour and a bit, but maybe that's because i'm used to very fast installs on my windows pc and my windows pc has better hardware, but none the less I am so impressed with it, i really am, i only wish that my mac was more powerful so that I didn't have to use my windows pc for gaming :(

I'm finding it faster on a 2010 MBP i7. The way it caches apps seems to make everything (after the first use after install) faster, stuff starts up quicker after a fresh boot up, whereas before apps would bounce for longer on the first start for that session.

Also, if you choose to let the mac save your open apps when you shut down and restart, it works surpringly well when you boot it back up.

Mine took about an hour to be honest. It had to 'download additional content' from the net then it rebooted and took 30-35 minutes to install from there, not bad really considering it was an upgrade. I would expect a clean install to be quicker! As all it has to do is slap the files on a hard drive rather than change/upgrade files.

So you guys are finding it runs faster? Out of interest, what systems are you running on?

Yes, I am. But for several reasons...

The way Lion has been built, they have REALLY thought about where people need the buttons and how to access things, so it's become easier and faster to navigate, the ability to now switch between spaces is much easier and faster before, and where you will be flicking to apps that are full screen you won't forget about spaces (like I did before!) so multi-tasking has been increased.

Expose' has pretty much been made redundant, which I found annoying as I used to use it ALL the time before but it's been taken over my mission control, took a little while to get used to it but I got the jist of it quickly enough and now I don't notice.

I'm definately going to buy a magic trackpad now for the Mac Pro for gestures alone to be honest (curse you Apple).

I'm going to be using it properly tonight, doing work on it and processing photos so I'll see what the apps are like when cached then but I expect it to be very well done - going to purposely use previous versions as well.

One thing I noticed was that Spotlight had to reindex everything, not so much of an issue with the Macbook which had sod all data on it...the macbook with 2TB's however took some time :o

I'm running it on the following systems:

Macbook 2008 Ali Body
2.4ghz c2d
2GB

&

Mac Pro 2007
2 x 2.66ghz c2d Xeons
9GB
Radeon X1900XTX 512mb

Overall even though I've only used it briefly I'm very impressed, one thing I was looking forward to the most was the new Mail - and it doesn't fail to impress, conversations are great, the layout, again is very well thought out, maximising the amount of space.

You guys are going to love it :)

I'm glad you said that I bought one second hand a few weeks back on the off chance that the new gestures would make it worthwhile. :D
