I thought he could only appeal if they think the courts/judge were unjust in their ruling (something along this line)?

EDIT:

Yes, but only if his lawyers are convinced that the appeal judges violated his constitutional rights. So it is a high threshold, and hard to meet.

Reevas family don't look too happy, the judge seemed quite sympathetic towards Pistorius. Said he had already been rehabilitated and didn't consider him a violent person.She went on and on and and on...
