ROLF who the **** is gona pay £6 odd delivery for a £3 IDE cable. :D
Don't laugh. I paid around that for a Zalman Northbridge cooler. :o

Doesn't bother me but I can see how it would bother others.

What would be good- and rather easy to implement would be to have the old system still in place, but with the option of creating an account (even if it only stores your address / credit details say). When you come to order you can fill in your details as usual or just key in your username/password which will automatically fill in all the form fields for you.

Well i dont know if its safe or not but Firefox stores all this for me, so whenever i place an order all the details are there ready for me. I was more interested in the Order History and Adjusting orders and other benefits of a Account system.

Having an account option to me is a no brainer, why would you not?

Fair enough not everyone wants to store their Card details, but then again thats upto the individual user if they chose to do so. I like the fact that some websites have 'One Click' ordering with little or no hassle involved really means that you can order something in less that 30 seconds.

The lack of access to previous invoices and receipts really does show a lack of professionalism from a company the size of OCUK, especially when requesting a return or refund, this could be an automated process that is carried out online with no need for a phone call or an e-mail to be sent, he RMA request could be processed and either accepted, rejected, or reffered.

And the delivery thing, well that's really annoying I can order say an IDE cable a SATA cable and some Inks from an OCUK competitor and get FREE 3-5day shipping, that then makes me think what a nice company, I'll go there again, a saving of £6+ on an order of £15 is huge.

I do not think a trade account would benefit OCUK as they would be unable to compete with the big players on price, since OCUK themselves buy from them, maybe they buy GFx direct from certain manufacturers, I know from experience for example MSI deal with direct selling, so no savings could be made.

I am all for change on the OCUK webshop it would make me think about nuying things from them again, even if it's just to see how much better the service is. :)

Hope to see Spie take some of the users friendly comments and reccomendations onboard.

I suspect that is pretty much the case - it probably takes as long to process and deal with a £2.50 order for an IDE cable as it does to deal with a £300 order for a videocard, and you can guess which one is more profitable.

I must admit there are times I really miss the cheap shipping (I keep getting tempted by one of the mice, but forgetting to add it to larger orders).

more expensive doesnt mean more profitable :p

OP:
From the companys perspective they won't see that it is necessary. What they use now (actinic) is long established software. It's simple, easy to use and reasonably priced.

Getting new software would be a big, expensive job and I expect the costs would far outweigh the benefits.

Until the company outgrows what they have now, and it becomes a problem, then there is no need to fix what isn't broken.

Well this is a bit like saying why do they have TV's at the back of every seat in a plane? The big ones still did the job just fine!
People will prefer to fly on a plane with better entertainment and so will probbably choose a different airline.

Most other companies have account facilities, people who want that will just go elsewhere. AFAIK losing customers is a problem.

Id love to see a User account option there, especially for tracing previous orders and monitoring current orders, i knwo you get updated via email but it would be nice to have the information on the website. However, there are a lot of peopel that do not liek having to register to purchase an item, so id like that option too.

I fully agree about postage being too much (i know citylink aint cheap and its standard rate probably), and to be honest its usually the P&P that pushes me away. I dont know why, but it seems OcUK charge VAT on postage costs (or used to, aint bought gear for a while), and it just knocks it up that little bit and edges my moving to another company.

Um, why not just make a user account optional. People that want to have order history etc can register and sign in.. but for those that just wanna buy something one off, why not just let them without signing up? :)

Best of both

OCUK have to charge VAT on postage! its illegal otherwise!
And citylink are one of the cheapest, ocuk probbably pay around 4 quid a shipment. (the extra is probbably for packing)

The better the in-flight entertainment, the more the tickets cost. While a few people may prefer to pay that bit extra, I think the majority would prefer the airline with the cheaper tickets.

The same goes for shopping, priority number one... THE PRICE!

What they have now is functional and does the job. New-fangled expensive e-commerce software will increase costs to the company and therefore increase the cost to you the consumer. Now that really would drive customers away.

- Shipping:

For parcels CityLink are great. There is a lack of cheap shipping for low-cost small items (cables etc) but aside from Royal Mail, who are rubbish, I don't suppose there is much else. If there was I'm sure they would be using it already.

Not really, why is it that for my summer holidays turkish airlines which probbably arent that great want 600 yet etihad with all the trimmings (internet access, live tv etc) want less.
The point is lets say the customer has used ocuk and another etailer in the past, both with exactly the same service.
They want to buy a new mouse, they look on both sites, they are exactly the same price, will the customer go for ocuk where he has to do lots of typing or another vendor where its a simple case of user and pass and your done?

Its just increased customer service, some shops offer a return policy where if you don't like it you can bring it back, if all the shops had that policy and say Next didn't, where would you buy from?
Costco with their take back anything of any age type policy- I now look there when buying pretty much anything..

You gotta keep up with the race.

In my opinion the login/account system sucks.
Every time i use a certain book/cd etc store (named after a certain jungle) i have to log in, and it winds me up.
Then say i havent used it for 6 months, and i login. But no, now i have a new card, so i have to cancel the old one, and put a new one in yada yada yada. Give me a simple basket and a checkout anyday.

Why does logging in wind you up more then entering your entire personal details?

You have to log-in everytime, don't you have cookies enabled?

Plus, you'd have to enter that new credit card every time you used a website which didn't have accounts, whereas you'd only have to use it once, and the information would be stored with an account. Far easier.

I like the account systems they make life a lot easier. It's nice to see what you've ordered and save orders for later. I know that OcUK now has a save order but thats no good if I go home and try and retrive that order.

I have recommended OC to a few people over the years & a couple of people have thought the site looks dodgy & refused to order from them. The site imo really needs to be updated it looks very amateur.

I tried to start a thread about delivery prices but my post got deleted.

The fact is the delivery prices are making me go elsewhere, even on expensive items. I think there should be some kind of saver option. Still get a secure delivery, but the order is not shipped for a week.

in my experience its the ones with the flashy websites that are hiding something :)

maybe a spruce up would be nice, but i like the fact that its quick to load and easy to find things :)
