600 mile trip for a card that performs only marginally better than a 7950 delivered free. Madness even thinking about considering that one...![]()
The manufacturers fund retail events, they made us sign agreements that such deals don't go online.
I put a Sapphire 7970 online at £199 the world industry would go mental and all demand it from Sapphire, something they and others can't afford to do. Plus AMD would want answers too, as it's simply impossible to buy a 7970 anywhere near this price, it's massively below cost and cost £1000s to support such a deal.
Yet doing a one time deal for a new large retail store that has a niche Market can be signed off within strict guidelines.
Such ridiculous moaning in here. Yeah, they should open up an unlimited amount of loss-leaders to the whole internet? They're epic deals, obviously limited, so of course they'll be store-only to encourage people to visit the new store. Very straight-forwards to me. Hell, I'm hoping to make it down just for a chat and a nose about if I can get a lift.
See me previous point. Not saying they should be mail order, just a bit more restricted to help out long travellers.
If they put some aside for long travellers, still on a firct come first served basis, it would encourage many more people to risk the trip.
I am also thinking of going and making the 6 hour trip but the thought that all 10 cards might be sold to students living 5 mins away before I even get there is putting me off tbh.
If they had so many that could only be sold to long distance visitors, it would still be a gamble as to whether they would be sold out and I might still have a wasted journey but it would be a gamble I would be prepared to make.

No, I agree with that. It would be nice to have something in place to protect the long journey people and encourage us distant customers to come (I think I posted something similar myself earlier in terms of rewarding long journeys), but I think people moaning about it being shop-only is silly.
At the same time, it seems clear that they want to increase shop footfall, and so we aren't the target audience. It's all about the new shop. Why would they want one-time visitors at the cost of potential regular business? As much as I would like it to be good for us, I can understand why they've made these decisions. What if they hold 10 cards, and only 6 people turn up from the required distance? How long do you hold them before the locals queuing up leave? It's all a bit fiddly, so I think it makes sense to just have it as it is, and either we get up really bloody early and have the same chance as everyone else, or that's that. We don't even know how much stock there is anyway.
As I listed earlier I suggested one of each of the offer products could be put in a draw for those who could not make it (even locals who are away that day for example), then a winner for each product would get to purchase at the offer price. Simples, and as a strictly limited promotion should not impact the agreements the manufacturers put in these incentive deals.

Granted but they only needed to hold them to say the opening time of 9am or 9.30 at a push. Even if travelling a long distance, you should aim to get there before opening time or tough luck, you have missed out on the deal. Then if enough long distance people haven't come which they would know very quickly, they can go to the next locals in the queue.
If I make the journey I would be aiming to get there for 7.30 to 8am anyway but would hate to pull up and find 100 locals who live 5 mins away got there 5 minutes earlier and snap up all the deals when it opens.
As for encouraging locals to the shop, why not long distance as well even if we never visit again? After all, it's still marketing plus I know I will end up buying other stuff while I am there! Let's say I was lucky and got a DGM monitor and 7970 card that I wanted. Staright away I would be buying a waterblock for the card and a monitor stand so they have another £160 sale from me and they have saved my free postage that I get as forum member.
