Overclockers UK Grand Opening!! Saturday 10th November

600 mile trip for a card that performs only marginally better than a 7950 delivered free. Madness even thinking about considering that one... :D

Hmmm I'm back in stoke that weekend fr the footie . Nexus 4 or 7970 hmmmm although to be fair my 480 SOC has never been stressed on what I need it for

Plus I hear Newcastle-under-Lyme/Stoke on Trent are rough, rough areas :p A guy like me wearing glasses and camped outside OcUK.. I dread to think what could happen on a dark night at 5am :p

A Little over 50 miles & £10 in fuel either way for me. Kind of tempted by the GDM & 7970, but it would be quite a bit of hassle to upgrade my 6950 as it's WCed, and there wouldn't actually be a huge difference.

Might still be tempted by the DGM though, but if I do get it, I would then just be tempted to get another 2 at full price...

We do deals all the time, and this is the first time we have done in store deals, I am sure there will be more when we do more shop events in the future. However, the good deals will go quick and everyone needs to understand that. :)

We ship all over the world, we have one store in this world, and yes majority of our customers online will not be near our store which is why they order online. We have never done in store deals before, but when I have seen other stores with amazing deals they do sell out fast and it is first come first serve basis. So this is the same as most other places.

Such ridiculous moaning in here. Yeah, they should open up an unlimited amount of loss-leaders to the whole internet? They're epic deals, obviously limited, so of course they'll be store-only to encourage people to visit the new store. Very straight-forwards to me. Hell, I'm hoping to make it down just for a chat and a nose about if I can get a lift.

The manufacturers fund retail events, they made us sign agreements that such deals don't go online.

I put a Sapphire 7970 online at £199 the world industry would go mental and all demand it from Sapphire, something they and others can't afford to do. Plus AMD would want answers too, as it's simply impossible to buy a 7970 anywhere near this price, it's massively below cost and cost £1000s to support such a deal.

Yet doing a one time deal for a new large retail store that has a niche Market can be signed off within strict guidelines.

I wasn't impying that you should make it online, I was just saying that say you have 20 Sapphire cards. Allow 10 to be sold to locals and 10 which can only be sold to people say travelling more than 50 or 100 miles.

It's still only a shop opening deal but at least allows us people who live hundreds of miles away a chance to get one plus encourages more people to come to your opening than would do normally which can only be a bonus surely?

See me previous point. Not saying they should be mail order, just a bit more restricted to help out long travellers.

If they put some aside for long travellers, still on a firct come first served basis, it would encourage many more people to risk the trip.

I am also thinking of going and making the 6 hour trip but the thought that all 10 cards might be sold to students living 5 mins away before I even get there is putting me off tbh.

If they had so many that could only be sold to long distance visitors, it would still be a gamble as to whether they would be sold out and I might still have a wasted journey but it would be a gamble I would be prepared to make.

I think you're missing the point of these deals. They're not trying to attract long distance customers who shop online here.

Its pretty much a local only event. At those prices id love the 27" panel and a 7970. But 8 hours driveing and a tank of fuel the saving is lost. Say my time is worth £25 an hour, tank of fuel £70. But hey maybe OcUK will open more outlets in other parts of the UK in time to come giving these kind of deals to others.

As I said earlier in this thread, congrats to everyone local to OcUK.

No, I agree with that. It would be nice to have something in place to protect the long journey people and encourage us distant customers to come (I think I posted something similar myself earlier in terms of rewarding long journeys), but I think people moaning about it being shop-only is silly.

At the same time, it seems clear that they want to increase shop footfall, and so we aren't the target audience. It's all about the new shop. Why would they want one-time visitors at the cost of potential regular business? As much as I would like it to be good for us, I can understand why they've made these decisions. What if they hold 10 cards, and only 6 people turn up from the required distance? How long do you hold them before the locals queuing up leave? It's all a bit fiddly, so I think it makes sense to just have it as it is, and either we get up really bloody early and have the same chance as everyone else, or that's that. We don't even know how much stock there is anyway.

I agree - get the feet through the door, and if you miss the offer deals then maybe pick up another different product instead while munching on Haribo. Marketing 101 . . .

As I listed earlier I suggested one of each of the offer products could be put in a draw for those who could not make it (even locals who are away that day for example), then a winner for each product would get to purchase at the offer price. Simples, and as a strictly limited promotion should not impact the agreements the manufacturers put in these incentive deals.

But either way big thanks to OC for the continued deals and good luck with the new shop - the online deals hard to beat anywhere tbh. And another vote for the showgirl pics (and showboys for the ladies who shop at OC - Gibbo, get that shirt off !).

Granted but they only needed to hold them to say the opening time of 9am or 9.30 at a push. Even if travelling a long distance, you should aim to get there before opening time or tough luck, you have missed out on the deal. Then if enough long distance people haven't come which they would know very quickly, they can go to the next locals in the queue.

If I make the journey I would be aiming to get there for 7.30 to 8am anyway but would hate to pull up and find 100 locals who live 5 mins away got there 5 minutes earlier and snap up all the deals when it opens.

As for encouraging locals to the shop, why not long distance as well even if we never visit again? After all, it's still marketing plus I know I will end up buying other stuff while I am there! Let's say I was lucky and got a DGM monitor and 7970 card that I wanted. Staright away I would be buying a waterblock for the card and a monitor stand so they have another £160 sale from me and they have saved my free postage that I get as forum member.

CJ's solution makes sense to me, and at least means you get a fun draw at some point. Your chances would be decent too as there probably wouldn't be LOADS of long journey people there.

I think the problem is that anyone who would consider driving that far is probably already a customer, and is probably going to buy stuff from OcUK anyway. The peripheral purchases are just as relevant to locals as they are to us, so I don't think it would be motivation enough for them to hold stock for us. I presume they're holding it all until 9AM as that's when doors open, but god knows how the queuing system is going to work. If it's a line where they just make a list of what everyone wants as they go down the queue until it's all allocated to a customer, then it does kinda screw us over. I'm not leaving at 3AM to get there for 5AM to beat the bloke who lives down the road.

TBH, I have no idea what the customer base is like. For all we know 10 blokes in anoraks will show up and it'll be really quiet. This isn't the new iPhone after all, it's a PC component shop most people have never heard of in the ******** of nowhere. Then we'd feel very silly indeed.

E: it seems the shop is full of hardware geeks on a usual day, so we shan't feel silly at all.
