Overwatch 2 is Official

On the surface sure, it "looks" the same, but it plays completely differently. With all the changes they've made to the tanks, and less shields in general, it feels way more fast paced. Every fight feels like 2 wrecking balls (no pun intended) smashing into each other, as opposed to one team trying to crack through a bunch of shields first.

I'll give it a go since it's free but I doubt much has changed.

Watching streams last night - genji nano blade was still the play every time - nothing changed there then.....

Not sure how 5 v 5 will make much of a difference....

I think you might be getting confused, only cosmetics change, which was the same for OW1... You can't buy anything that is game changing or altering outside of cosmetics.

New Heroes can be bought rather than with grind.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that new heroes in Overwatch 2 would be unlocked in their free tier Battle Pass system. This means that you will potentially need to grind hours of the game in order to play any new hero. On the other hand you can pay to unlock the tiers instantly, essentially making it pay to win. The first character to be done this way is the new healer, Kiriko. Alternatively, Kiriko will be available at launch with the purchase of the Watch Point pack.

Valorant works in the same way, I don’t think that‘s ever been described as pay to win? It’s not like it’s some hugely OP class that you can only unlock by paying.

Yeah, I couldn't get on last night either. Had a quick couple of games this morning and enjoyed them. Yes, generally it just looks and sounds prettier than OW1, but I'm one of the few that still really enjoyed OW1. I was quite lost the last two nights with no Overwatch to play  :(

haha - yeah - I love OW back in the day - but they messed around with it too much - tried to balance everything and it went out the window for me last 12-18 months

I played OW1 from launch all the way up to the last day. I like the characters, I like the lore, and I generally liked the gameplay.

To be honest, I never quite understood all the whining and moaning about lack of content. You paid a one-off purchase for the game. How much were you forced to pay afterwards? Nothing. How much were you expected to pay afterwards? Nothing. How much does creating a new character, or new map, or new game mode cost in resource? Easily tens of people. So where does the money come from to pay those people? Apparently people just demanded all this sustained content while paying nothing towards it. I have no idea how they expect the economics of that to work.

Now OW2 has gone F2P, and people are complaining about characters and other resource-intensive assets being pay-locked (or grind-locked). Well if they're now F2p, and now have a goal to sustain relevance by drip feeding content, how do they expect to be able to sustain the resource to produce this content without some players (not even forcing all players) to drip feed some money?

OW1 - played from launch - enjoyed at the outset and for a while however - biggest issue was it was so DPS focused....Personally it felt like you couldn't influence a match/round as Tank/Healer - you were there to make up the numbers. DPS won or lost the game and the other characters/players were just secondary to that. As time went on 10/15 minute queue times for DPS was just ridiculous.

There is a battlepass in OW2 - yes - like many other games - MW/Valorant/Apex etc etc - It's purely cosmetic in most cases...

I see no initial reason to pay for anything myself.
5 v 5 seems to play well - couple of quick round this morning and felt nice and polished, good quick load times etc. Seems more balanced so far

Personally I'm fairly happy to pay for a battle pass for a couple of seasons at least. I'll see how the content pans out. But like I say, I've played since launch, and I have over 900 hours in OW1. Outside of the initial £50 purchase or whatever it was, and a few skins and emotes I paid some of the special league tokens, I've paid less than £100 for over 900 hours of entertainment. I feel like I can pay a little bit of money to show my support after all that. Same goes for anything really - music, film, tv, youtube content etc. If you like something, show your support.

yeah - I'm in agreement - I've no issue with the battlepass/season pass thing. Look at Apex - free game....nothing to pay if you don't want to.

I'm the same 950 hours or something on OW - I'll play for free just now and see what happens going forward with OW2

Independent tracking software has me at 1,808 hours of Overwatch and I'm fairly sure I'd done 600-900 hours before I got this software...

Likewise, I paid for the game and I think a couple of times I bought loot boxes as I was playing so much, I figured it the right thing to do in some ways.

So what you're saying is, support characters were only there to support?

It's a little facetious as of course support characters are secondary to the eliminations that the DPS can get. But to say tanks and healers couldn't influence a match is just wrong. Try going in to quick play with a 6 (or 5) stack of only DPS and sure you'll win some but you'll lose a lot too. I mained Reinhardt and having a shield, effectively providing immunity to your DPS, while you advance on points was a massive assistance. Or making sure your shield doesn't fully break so, for example, you can cover your team as you know the enemy DVa has their ultimate. I'll admit it's not the most intense form of gaming but matches regularly swing on if your, or your enemies tanks and/or healers, goes down - I mean how many times were calls made to focus a healer or a tank. That alone shows how important they are.
