Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen - MMO on Kickstarter

Only just really seen this, I don't want to jinx it and get all excited about another MMO but this really does feel special. As an old EQ2 player a lot of the design appeals to me.

Might have to donate on this one..

Actually, I disagree. In the past game developers didn't let you see games until they were in a fit state for public consumption (even though they called it alpha, it really wasn't alpha it was more like late stage closed beta) and by that time most of the important development decisions had already been made and it was too late to make fundamental changes. By getting in early during pre-alpha when the game is literally changing by the week you can give feedback that actually goes into shaping the game you want to see. Just look at all the early access games on Steam. None of them are in the alpha stages of development. The general public wouldn't understand what a real alpha stage game was like.

I'm all for getting in early and helping to shape the game.

Whether the business model relies on loot boxes, $1k alpha access or $100 tanks, it's still bottom feeding on bloated, decaying whales. Furthermore, players who pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for a game are not a good source of feedback and there are well documented cognitive biases which support this idea:

- Anchoring - the tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information offered

- Ostrich_effect - the tendency to avoid bad news

- Choice-supportive_bias - the tendency to find positive attributes to an option after it was selected

- Endowment effect - ascribing more value to things just because we own them

- Sunk_cost - ie. "I've already pledged so I might as well keep going with this even if I don't like where it is going".

The companies in the gaming industry that use these tactics are actually predatory (they can be compared to Predatory_lending ) so even if they are not "forcing" anyone to buy their products, they are highly toxic for gaming.

Early/alpha/beta access done right were Minecraft, Path of Exile, RimWorld and others but certainly not this game.

I have to agree with Zethor's summarised analogy on this however somewhat situational.

This unfortunately is the way of the world now with games development becoming more complex,
MMORPG especially demands huge resources and funding - it’s about as complex as it gets.

Comparing MC,RW’s approach is indeed a different class of development and can normally be achieved on a relatively low budget.
With this in mind unless you have a huge amount of publisher’s funding behind you cough Activisio.. cough.. or blessed by angle investors & CV then
the money has to come from somewhere.

So pledging can be a good thing otherwise the market would be plastered with triple AAA development teams producing 90% crap and charging a hefty release price.
This followed by squeezing out loot boxes and purchasable seasonal content to feed the boardroom fat cats who don’t give a toss about games or their player base.

In the case of Pantheon I’m a little more sympathetic, they clearly give a strong indication that they care about game creation in the published YouTube streams,
Being an indie develop they have a mammoth of a challenge ahead of them but at the same time they are showing they are capable of quality delivery.
There is no doubt that $1000 is a humongous price to pledge for a pre alpha – Yes it is in some respect taking advantage of the passionate followers and the not so passionate that have money to burn.

Cromulent is clearly passionate about this development and there is nothing wrong in that. In terms of physical return yes he’s getting very little and worse scenario may end up with nothing.
But you could say the same thing about spending money smoking fags or money down the pub.

Truly hope this ends up becoming a success story because I need a good MMORPG and coming from the actual creator of Everquest this is certainly is appealing.

Believe in Brad!

However, he did have a well publicized melt down of epic proportions and from what certain sources have said used some of the initial funding to pay off debts and push white powder up his nose.

If he gets anywhere close to Everquest though, I will be over the moon!

I was a massive ffxi fan but its current retail state isn't very fun anymore since the npc mercs were released in 2014 seriously reducing group content, so i'm all over pantheon. i just want another mmo that is an actual mmo and not a bad single player game with a multiplayer option tagged on. I havent pledged yet but strongly thinking about going in for alpha.

Im looking forward to this, but im not prepared to pay for Alpha, infact im going to leave the magic of the game til retail should it ever get there... last few MMORPGS i played in Beta, i generally stayed a while in release and then got bored as the magic kind of wore off...

I have had Sea of Thieves Alpha installed on my Xbox since it went live pretty much (almost a year ago or something?) but i have never once yet logged into it, its now in Beta, and ive still not logged in, ive learnt my lesson, save the magic for release...

Its been really hard to not jump in and check it out, but i want that wide eyed wonder feeling again of going in blind and learning my way, much like original EQ.

I screwed up by playing WoW and TESO Beta's, wish i hadnt done that with either, tbh WoW wasnt too bad as ive played every expansion of it since and purposely not played their betas, but TESO i ruined by playing the beta extensively, yeah the games changed a lot but the beta kinda ruined a lot of it for me.

Bless & Air MMORPGs Confirmed for this year

This is exactly the reason why i'm looking forward to Pantheon,

'Bless and Air' being another Korean mmorpg where you ride ducks mounts and wear super hero outfits then steamrole your way through mobs with clicky clicky.
Done so many time its just not appealing, well at least to me :D

The combat looks boring, 2019 and they choose standing still trading blows until one of you dies ? It was fine 20 years ago, but now, not so much :(

Its supposed to be slow like that, its trying to recapture those MMOs you mention of 20 years ago. That's the sort of MMO that the market is missing these days, thankfully there are literally dozens of MMOs of the more modern style that people looking for that sort of thing can play and eventually when Pantheon is released there will finally be one that plays like an MMO from the golden age of MMOs (1997-2005ish) again without us having to resort to playing on things like p1999

Exactly, most MMORPG's these days are just hack & slash button mash, steam roll through as quick as possible, the Pantheon combat play style closely represents that of Everquest, where you have to really work together as a team to take down groups of mobs, each class counts. It may look boring but it's actually both engaging and rewarding, Also during combat and down time people actually talk to each other. It creates social and challenging game play.

Just so happy to have an MMO on the way where you have to sit to med mana back. Back in the golden mmo age it was precisely those periods of time of sitting when you could chat with your group, get to know people, interact and all of that helps to build relationships and a far stronger community in an MMO than grouping with people whose entire interaction with you consists of "hey" and then later "thx cya" (and sometimes you were lucky if you even got that much chat out of them), its nice to actually "adventure" through a dungeon instead of rush rush rush , must get the dungeon done as quick as possible ! hurry hurry !

To some of us old schooler's, running around with a huge mini-map in your face going between NPC's with huge exclamation points above their heads and spamming abilities in fights like in a Michael Bay movie is extremely boring. Almost all modern MMORPG's you could write a script to play the game.

Conan was the last decent MMO until they ruined it simply due to grind replacing content. Starter areas are all well and good, but all focus for all devs should be endgame PVE content.

I detest PVP in MMO, especially with the cheating epidemic PC gaming has at this current time.
