Path of Exile(diablo clone)

Had a go on this yesterday on the work laptop with having no internet at the minute at home (bloody open reach).

Im struggling to get used to the map. Cant tell where i need to go. Am i being an idiot here?

Is everyone playing Hardcore? I don't see the point of starting on default, when on hardcore if you die you get moved there. Its a much better game for me and a better challenge on Hardcore, you really have to think about what your doing.

P.s For anyone interested here's a currency calculator for found items/orbs etc...

I was planning on doing HC till I die then just continue on default forever but really HC is just way way better. I think I'll use my default character basically to practice encounters on and try and practice with similar stats/build.

not really a great idea to use orbs on your items though, best used for trading. I guess if your having terrible drops you could but meh, I'd rather just farm until somethin drops.

No that's the idea of the game, turning a normal item in to a rare or adding a magic somethign to it. I'm a level 14 ranger and killed the warden easy, orbs drop often enought that having some decent equipment is more important until you get the drops than hording stuff.

Bit stalled at the moment, at level 31 on my Ranger and I'm trying to plan out the skill tree. I had a plan, but after more consideration I'm still not sure going for Iron Grip is worth it even though it is only a 5 skill point branch off to get it. Also has anyone used Mind Drinker? going for physical damage purely but 2% doesn't sound a lot, not sure if going for mana regen passives instead would be better off.

Yeah I was planning on going for Iron Grip (eventually) but after realising that the Strength boost is only 1% per 5 points I'm not so sure anymore. I mean if all I'm going to get is maybe 10-20% damage boost if I'm lucky I could probably spend the points better elsewhere. I'll have to take another look and see how many points it would cost me to deviate, what I'd gain on the way and what I could gain elsewhere.

That is one way certainly. A lucky rare drop of the type you want with the stats you'd like and good selection of orbs is pretty slim. You do get a lot of options though which is great.
1. You can get a white item, up the quality for fewer whetstones/blacksmithing, use an a) Orb of Chance, hoping for a rare upgrade (can it upgrade to Legendary?) and upgrade it from magic to rare if not. b) Upgrade it straight to rare with the Orb of Alchemy. c) If its not got the stats you want you can reforge it.
2. Upgrade it from a magic with the slots you like.
3. Reforge the rare with the slots you like.
4. Reforge the gem slots and the links on an existing rare with the stats you want.

Does anyone know what sort of dps and hp/mana levels we can expect by endgame?
I was looking at the weapon damage ranges for 2H weapons earlier and they're in the region of 110 dps base so I guess with quality improvements, stats and maybe powerful uniques you'd be looking at anywhere from 300-500 dps, with passives for IAS/Damage/Crit maybe 2-4x that and I'm not sure how much extra from skills.
Dunno what sort of hp range we'd expect though. It seems a lot of the skills that give you a set amount of life tend to be +30 which seems like a really small amount compared to games D3 where your health increases rapidly towards the end of the levelling curve, so I'm guessing we're not expected to have 10-30k by endgame.

Just had a good 1hr session and got massive amounts of uber loot so I was wondering if they have boosted anything ? 3 gems, orbs, enchantment stuff and one of those items that change the colour of gem slots.

My ranger is currently level 25 and I've mainly gone full on DPS but I really need to look at resistances/health now as mobs that use magic really do melt me. Aiming to get Alchemist/Iron Reflexes/Crystal Skin and maybe Heartseeker cause it sounds awesome :p

Doing that just completely defeats the point of hardcore IMO.

I really want to like the game, but I can't help but feel both D3 and TL2 are better games :(. Maybe I need to play more classes and find one I like more, only played Marauder to 20ish and Witch to level 12ish so far.

How exactly? Either level high, put in loads of hours, die unexpectedly, rinse and repeat 20 times until you do it.

Or over level/overgear the area you plan on doing.

Or practice it on normal.

I have other things to do with my life.

Also D3 was a good game, but lacked so much customization it was shocking, also RMAH. TL2 is unbelievably boring.

So, LOVED the ranger class, but can see it becoming very fragile unless built properly. Enjoyed the Shadow class, but very weak to begin with and I imagine not a very good solo class.

Time to try the witch!

Shadow are great and they are the best solo class, I'm using whirling blades, double strike and 3x fire trap. Having no problems clearing areas 3 levels above me, although I did get fairly good drops.

I prefer default. I'd rather just play the game and farm gear rather than restart everything when I die, and I don't really like playing hardcore until I die because default/hardcore stash tabs are separated so I need to keep all my currency/items on me until I die to put them in the default stash.

Agree with purdy, AH and RMAH was a stupid idea, I like in PoE that you have to actually go to people and trade with them, I thought D3 was terrible. Level up, get new skills, kill stuff. On PoE you actually have to farm for your skills, level them up, figure out this build on a massive passive tree etc.

Only thing I liked from D3 was that hardcore chars were deleted, I think that would make me try hardcore out a bit more on PoE if it was like that. And TL2 I just couldn't get into. Art style mostly, and just found it boring.

That's exactly what the sensible players did on D3 Inferno originally. Even more so when it came to boss battles. Until you had actually fought something with similar stats there was no way you could know if you were prepared for the fight or not. There's a difference between being 'hardcore' and being recklessly stupid.

Torchlight 2 had such a dreadful skill system. The ridiculous level requirements meant you couldn't actually spec heavily in anything, you just had to slowly progress them through the game. The 'breakpoint' boosts were generally not very epic or worth waiting, just a nice boost. And so many of the skills just never seemed to be as good as they sounded ><

I've turned off all the chat and I'm playing it as a single player game. Orbs of transmutation and alteration are easily and reliably obtained from trading stuff with vendors, so I think it's a better idea to use them whenever they'd be useful than it is to farm in the hope of something better dropping eventually. I could farm a couple of hundred of each if I wanted to - why should I worry about using a dozen?

Like Tune said, its probably best to save your Orbs. Though if you are going to craft a white item because it has good links/gem slots make sure you improve the quality of the weapon at white level BEFORE you upgrade it to magical, that way you only use 4 Armor scraps or whetstones to get max 20%. If you dont then magical will cost you 6 and rare 8 to get to 20%.

Cheers, I didn't know that the cost varied. I'll do it the more efficient way next time.

Because when you have an item you can't seem to find a replacement for, you'll more than likely end up looking in trade chat, then you will probably not have enough to buy it, and wish you kept your orbs rather than using on items that got replaced 60 levels ago. And sure, you could farm a couple hundred of each, but it would take you months for certain orbs. Exalted, divine, GCP, regal etc, all reallyy rare drops, you can't really farm them, would takes months.
