Paying a garage to fix a problem and having the problem come back

I'm just updating as I want to ask, what would you do?

Buy a UKDM like you should have in the first place..................Sorry ;):(:)

Really **** news! That engine is just cursed, especially after such an expensive engine rebuild from someone who knows what they're doing. Hey, even Nez had his fancy B18 engine go pop, possibly due to oil issues during his hillclimbing, but his was in an extreme environment!

What you've mentioned about welded in plates has me thinking about mine now and the want to put in plates vs a Moroso sump!

Surely this issue hasn't been caused by your own negligence in terms of the oil level when tracking or during other times! If there's been an oil issue then I probably wouldn't have taken it near the track, but that's not important here. What is, is that you had it rebuild and fixed less than a year ago and it's shafted itself again, was any warranty hinted at or given, if not then I would at least expect a reduced cost should you get him to remedy this as it hard to prove you have't treated it as required. Then again it's easy to assume that you might not have :(

You're right at the end of the day, I want the car back and running and it's not that much money.

New engine is 2k or repair the old one which is £1.5-£2K parts+labour, decisions decisions !

With the problems encountered on this engine, is it really worth the risk ploughing more money into it and having the same thing, or something similar happen again? I know Nez got a B18 for around £1500 recently, but then the health of a 2nd hand engine is unknown also.

Keep us updated with what's happening and what you decide to do.

I'd try my best to reach some sort of compensation settlement with the garage and take it elsewhere. There is nothing wrong in fixing it a third time, but you'd be starting to move away from standard oversized bearings if it went properly. Something at the back of my head would be a bit uneasy with a quadruple rebuilt engine.

I'd see if you could salvage the rebuilt head and get another bottom end rebuilt. By someone else.

No I serviced it with Oil+filter every 6k/6 months (whichever was first), I have receipts from when I bought everything. He changed the plugs in November 2012.

I have an email that I've drafted clarifying what happened at Combe and questioning the underlying oil consumption. I'd like to know why others who have had theirs rebuilt have no consumption whatsoever and mine seems to still have a problem, which I think contributed, along with my failure to check after the first 15mins to it's early demise.

If you like the car as much as i think you do then you should be looking for prices of a new short motor which comprises block with pistons, crank, oil pump and balance shaft if fitted then reuse your original cylinder head and ancillaries. Also what some of the posters here that **** of the mechanic seem to forget that the machining ie boring and honing the cylinders and regrinding the crank were done by independent engineers not the garage themselves. I used to do a fair bit of rallying in the 70's and built all my own engines normally 1725cc Holbay engines and when i had a re-bore done i always asked for the bored fit to be tight which allows them to wear down to near correct fit.

First thing is first, contact the garage with your problem and see what they say. Something does seem amiss, did you notice oil consumption in the 14k miles you drove it after the rebuild?

Then if you think the car is worth repairing, repair it. Otherwise, get rid. It is a real shame. If it will cost you £2k to rebuild again, or lets say half that if the garage is nice, and less work needs to be carried out. Why spend that sort of money on 16 year old car? I know you like the car a lot but sometimes you have to go head over heart.

Thing is, he must be at least 8k into it by now, 2k to get it going makes sense.
