Paying a garage to fix a problem and having the problem come back

Heard these stories a million times where people have had ongoing/recurring problems with rebuilt engines. Usually it's by specialist Japanese tuning shops.
My opinion is that these places are usually run by hobby mechanics who are out of their depth when it comes to engines or anything genuinely technical.

I think give them another chance to fix at their expense.

If no joy, any ideas how muffin is placed for a full/partial refund ?

Think it's worth just giving him a call to let him know see if he does anything up front.

RE: refund of travel costs... not sure how to approach that. I think if I want to sort it with someone else then I need to let that someone else know that it'll be paid for by the original garage and I can press for compensation of travel costs, I wouldn't bother with lost time. Depends if it's done willingly or not, not that I'm exactly looking forward to the oncoming conversation :p

They should replace the engine with a similar mileage rebuilt unit and then they can fix up and move on your old one in their own time IMO. I don't think that's unreasonable if you can trust that the fault is not their handywork and just an unfortunate anomaly with your current engine.

Really unlucky though. I hate complaining, especially when there's a chance of conflict. With the amount of money involved it's just not a comfortable position to be in. I hope you get it sorted smoothly.

It probably does not help that these engines were very highly tuned and built to very tight tolerances from the factory.

I'm no mechanic but i would be surprised if rebuilding such a highly tuned engine with it's high red line and bhp per litre output, was as straightforward as say a 1.8 litre K series Rover engine or Ford duratec

Having said that, you have paid for a rebuild and for the problem to be fixed so it's not unreasonable to expect, the garage to do that.

I would also get your radio paid for, at the end of the day, your car should not be coming back from the garage with bit's missing!

Had this exact issue with mine. No amount of money could find the bottom of the problem and I ended up selling the car because of it.

I put up with regular oil top ups for 5 years then just gave in. Shame really, they're incredible cars even when they don't work properly!

Then these "specialists" shouldn't be offering services they cannot reliably provide.

Agreed, though it's not every enginge which has issues, just a select few which are 'problem engines' which you hear about.

I'd be baffled as to what to do in your shoes now Muffin. I'd seriously consider getting rid.
