PC V's Consoles

I spent more time trying to overcome the bugs in Bioshock 1 + 2 when i bought them off of steam than i did playing the sodding things. By the time i had sorted out the sound issue in Bioshock 1 i was completely disheartened with the game so instead of replaying it, moved onto Bioshock 2... only to be met with more bugs.

It's rubbish like that that's screwing over PC gamings popularity, thank god for titles like Starcraft 2 that just 'work', run smoothly on even modest PCs, configure your image settings automatically almost perfectly and is just plain fun.

Consoles are mostly for simpletons and the rare occasion of a good console exclusive. PC gaming is awesome and more like an excellent hoby.

The kind of simpletons that can't spell hobby?

I use both, I prefer my PC for most games in general especially multiplayer.

I wouldn't be without my PC but I wouldn't be without my consoles either.

Edit: I hated BioShock on PC, I didn't bother getting the second on PC I got it on 360 instead! Most FPS games I prefer on PC but BioShock is an odd exception.

very poor analogy imo

I think the original analogy was aimed at showing that console vs PC is a pointless argument as they both do the same thing. The same way cars and bikes do the same thing.

But still, why let common sense stop you from continuing with a pointless debate! :D

CONSOLES ******* OWN!111!!111 MY PS3 CAN PLAY CRYSIS 2 AT 1920X1080 IN 3D AT 300FPS ON A 300HZ MONITORRRRRRRRRRRRRR NO PC CANT BEAT THAT LOLLOLOLOZLOZLOZLOZLOZLOZZLOZLOLOZLOLLOZLOZ

Fully star out swear words.

I think consoles are just aimed at more casual gamers. Besides the odd title it seems to be more pick-up and play and online communities don't seem to live as long as PC games (look at CS 1.6, don't think you'd see something quite like that with consoles).

I think these PC v console arguments are generally pretty stupid and immature. We're all gamers at the end of the day.

To be honest I think it's like any hobby such as photography, model making, cars.

The more money you put into it, the more you get. I see consoles as entry level into video gaming and pc more intermediate/advanced due to the time and money involved. I get a more enjoyable experience from PC due to my time involved - I'm dedicated to get as good an experience I can get on a platform for video gaming and PCs allow me too.

Just my two pence.

well case in point without making excuses for this and that..

bought the £50 ID pack from steam (quakecon)

hardly anything works.

Hexen II .. openGL issue
Quake II .. openGL issue
Quake II expansions x2 .. openGL issue
Return to castle wolfenstien .. openGL issue
Doom 3 ... no RoE key ??

so.. although you may say well thats Ati`s fault for the Opengl **** up, and the Key problem is steams fault or ID`s fault.. the overall point i was making was with a console you simply do not have to care about this stuff.

dont get me wrong i have a ps3 and 360 and a great pc but you cant be guarenteed as an overall experience that pc will be as integrated and straight forward as a console... and with gaming after a hard day at work thats all you really want.

You are talking about games as far back as 1996. The ability to play retro games on the PC is one of its benefits, not a fault of it. If you wanted to play a 1996 game on your console you'd have to go out and buy an N64. Games that are that old usually take a bit of fiddling, but it's a lot better than physically not being able to get them at all which would be the situation if you have a 360 or ps3.

I thought exactly the same thing

The PS3, Wii and 360 are all capable of playing games from their previous iterations. For example i purchased Zelda:OOT for the Wii for around £5 iirc and Super Mario World for £2.50, my 360 plays all of my original Xbox disks and the PS3 will play all PS1 disks. All of the consoles also have a very large back catalogue of classic games available on their digital download platforms for budget prices, many of which have been remastered in a higher resolution (eg. Castlevania symphony of the night) or completely redone in 3D (Bionic Commando).

The only real exception is the PS3 playing PS2 games, however developers have started releasing remastered versions of classic PS2 games at budget prices. One such example is the god of war collection which contains god of war 1 + 2 for £12. Or one could buy a launch model 60GB PS3 which will play all PS2 and PS1 disks.

Yeah but you have to re-buy everything. If you have the original PS discs you can just use an Emulator on PC. So PC plays console games too. :p

Nintendo you can download the ROMs if you have the original cartridges... Though most probably don't.

PC
better graphics
higher fps
cheaper games
Easily moddable games
Larger choice of controllers
Expensive
Some people find it fun to build PC's
Can do a lot more than consoles

Consoles
Cheap
'Plug 'n' play' gaming
Smaller

No you don't. I play all of my old PS1 games using my original disks on my PS3, same applies to my 360 and xbox and my Wii and gamecube. I happily forked out the princely sum of £6 per god of war to replay them in high definition with imrpoved textures and lighting. The only one that does agree with your claim is the wii, which cannot accept N64 carts due to physical restrictions, however the prices are very low.

A couple of the consoles will run emulators too, however going into detail would break the forum rules so i'll leave it at that.

I was just going by the PS2 and Wii but I do agree on the xbox discs and that...

But you can have them all on a nice big hard drive instead of thousands of discs and boxes.

In which case i'll throw into the pot games such as Silver and those listed above which won't run happily (if at all) on modern operating systems or with modern hardware. Yes you could do a dual boot but that's far more of a ballache than just dusting off the ol' PS2 and firing up a game.

Again you can do the same on consoles due to them being available on their digital download platform.

I personally think both PCs and consoles have their merits. But to claim PCs are more retro friendly just isn't true, there's shed loads of retro stuff being remastered/reeleased on consoles every week. Both platforms are just as capable of one another of legally enjoying retro goodness.

For me, PC is better for some things, and console is better for others, mainly games that I'd prefer to use a controller for.

Also, I like a lot of console exclusives and, for the price of some GPUs, can play them hassle free.

Consoles are better for social multiplayer when you don't want to be sitting in a room on your own (regardless of how many people you have on voice chat.)

I like them both, and I think the OP was just trying to start some bashing.

I havn't heard of Silver before. :(

I'm not saying there isn't shed loads of retro capabilities on consoles, far from it. I'd rather just have all of my games backed up on a hard drive than switching discs and having a loud old slow console. The emulator can make them run better than their respective hardware I've found. And also have screen smoothing. ePSXe uses OpenGL so isn't CPU bound, not sure about the ps2 emulator. Xbox emulator is still in the works though so probably be better using the 360. :p

I hadn't realised that console games were as backwards compatible as they are, but still the fact that PS2 games won't play on PS3s now is a big blow to the claim that they are as retro friendly as PC titles. Another thing that I like about retro gaming on the PC is the modding ability. I recently played through deus ex - I believe my mentioning it means that someone will now be reinstalling it :p - and the various graphical updates that you can now get make it much less dated.
