People that pay by phone and don’t have cards on them.

That's the standard for a transport card in any payment ecosystem!
Maybe it's been longer than I thought when I last investigated it on an Android phone :p Although I'm sure we looked on my girlfriend's Samsung and it wasn't there (Google Wallet).

But no matter, it works really well. I just don't remember it being advertised to anyone. I still see people desperately trying to unlock their phone before passing through the barriers which is annoying!

What do you do on those rare occassions it goes down and you want to buy something, just walk away without your items?
Have never been in this scenario in all these years. The only time I could not pay by contactless was at a Thai restaurant that didn't take any card payments at all, cash only, it was not clear until the meal was over and the waiter said cash only.... So I paid via bank transfer..

Phone payments, what are those? ;)

I've still not set that up on my phone, and still carry a couple of cards and usually some notes at least, mind you that's partly because in the last few years the local Tesco had it's payment processing server in store go down (abandoned baskets and trolleys all over) so they could only take cash and whilst the cash machines outside were still working I think one was already empty*, and the opticians had their system down a while back resulting in the senior assistant demoing to the younger one how to use a click clack machine, having pulled it out from the back office and taken it out of it's packing for the first time :)

I like tech, but I still don't trust it fully.

*Those machines always seem to have one out of action/no cash whenever I go to use one.

Abacus?!

At Queens Country School in Stoke on Trent we actually were taught how to use the Abacus in the early 90s. I remember those days well.
I think the Abacus was a new fangled thing compared to what they used :)

For the youngsters amongst us, a click clack machine AKA imprint machine ran a roller over the top of your debit/credit card so the raised print pushed against some sheets with carbon copy paper stuff in them, copying the details on the card and making a distinct "click clack" as the roller went from one side to the other.

I'm not even going to try and describe what carbon copy paper was...

Oh one of those, I used those in the 90s too working in a shop. Carbon copy paper books were a menace. Blue ink on my hands and shirts :p

can you use google pay/apple pay to pay using Amex at places that don't take Amex?

With Google/Apple Pay no, but if you have an Apple Pay Mastercard or Samsung Pay+ card, then because they are their own payment Mastercard which then behind the scenes take payment from Amex/barclays or whatever you choose, then yes you can with those. I don't know if the Apple Pay card actually does this exact feature but it sounded like it did, Samsung Pay+ does do this, and you can later change the payemnt card the money went from within the app etc too so makes payment management after a purchase easy too.

Are they still allowed to use these? It’s basically cloning your card isn’t it :p

I used one about 7yrs ago when our card readers went down, but they aren’t allowed to be used anymore, not sure if they are still legal though.

For me I ditched cards and cash for 99% of my purchases when Apple Pay came out in 2015, never had a transaction fail where I had to leave stuff behind and I must have made thousands of payments by now with the watch mainly and iPhone. Far more secure as I’m not flashing my card number about and risk someone noticing my pin if I have to use that.

My wallet spends its life stuck at home apart from when I must use it to use pay at the pump, I’ll be really glad when they update that for contactless, they’ll have to eventually.

Sadly OP a lot of people today jump in two feet first in to any new technology.

I know back in my day people were more cautious about relying only on one system.

Imagine if we were only using bitcoin, or another crypto currency, and the power went out.

what happens when the powers out and nobody is holding cash?
you get your cheque book out .... bar code scanner won't be working though.

who wants to carry a phone around the shops - go lightweight (stay out of that ev, too) just put a credit card in your pocket -
abandonned carrying additional junk during covid, leave the rest in the safe zone in the car, avoid those fomites on your phone/precious.

But at the shops or even filling your car, if the power goes out you ain't using cash either.
never mind paying by phone - a problem with paying by card after filling up with diesel is the reason I always carry some cash now - it's not like you can put it back! - no petrol station is going to refuse cash
I know in that scenario paying by phone might have worked! but there's no ifs or buts with cash...
