Persona 5 - why is everyone going gaga over it?

The thing is, reviews generally only really matter if a game is a genre you enjoy.

I mean, if every reviewer said FIFA 2018 was the greatest football game of all time it wouldn't suddenly make me interested in playing it because I know it's not my cup of tea

If reviewers gave something in the stealth genre (HITMAN, Dishonoured, Thief etc) a middling review then I still might find something in there that appeals more to me

TL : DR

If you don't like Japanese RPGs then I doubt it's suddenly going to appeal to you because it's getting amazing reviews.

Yea I wouldn't just jump at this due to high ratings, they probably get reviewed by fans of the series and genre also

I played P4G and it was my first. The start was super slow, a lot to read etc and it's all rather quirky.

I got a decent way in to it before just stopping, it was clearly a great game, just not for me. People swear by it mind, certainly often referred to as the best vita game (though that's not too hard :D)

It may well go the same way as Final Fantasy VII did on the original PlayStation.

Loads of gamers, including myself, had never played or even heard of Final Fantasy until then.

But all the hype and great reviews meant you felt like you owed it to yourself to give it a go.

I know I did and it was one of the best experiences of my gaming life so far.

That's sort of why I tried P4G, I'm certainly looking to try this as there was something there that I liked and to be fair that was a ps2 port so things have clearly come along way since

Will wait and see how players here get on with it, especially newcomers as I class myself as that still really

If you've not heard of the Persona franchise until now then maybe it's not for you?

If you're genuinely intrigued about the type of game that it is from what you've heard then might be worth giving it a go. Like, for example, every game ever.

Sounds like a Pokemon variant, mixed with a bit of The Sims, some generic 90s arcade beat-em-up games and an unhealthy dose of those scantily clad schoolgirl dating things from Steam....

No idea why people like it, but then people went nuts over things like Flappy Bird.

I can honestly see why you would think that. :) But actually the first Persona game came out at the same time as the first Pokémon game (1996) from what I can tell. And it doesn't allow you to catch demons (that's another related game series called Shin Megami Tensei).

The game is a combination of JRPG and Japanese life simulator. But like a whole lot of Japanese 'slice of life'/ school sims there is maybe a bit too much of a lean towards the whole schoolgirl stuff which I'm not a fan of. At all...

There is however another side to it which is the whole gothic monster universe which I think is strong enough to carry the series beyond the Cons that you mentioned. The Persona worlds (different in each game) are interesting enough to keep you interested and there's a certain 'Urban Legend' style to the murder mystery side of the game that's really well told and holds your(well, my) interest. Also, some weird mechanics for summoning in game alter egos lol.

I mostly entered the thread to see what Persona 5 was and then why people are going nuts over it.
I started reading about it and, like many Japanese games, there seems to be several tomes of lore behind just the basic plot. Same reason I never bothered playing Metal Gear, what with all the different Snakes and Big Bosses you have to know about... oh and mechas and all this stuff that most players seem to have grown up with.
I dunno, maybe I'm just too old for this stuff. :D

Loool that's completely fair enough. It's the same issue I have with Final Fantasy 4000 or whatever number we're on now. There's definitely a level of required knowledge to really appreciate a lot of the references and, actually, they feel like they're built heavily on nostalgia now too instead of a good story. Like they have no interest in attracting new people to the genre.

I'm not gonna tell you that Persona 5 is different 'cos it definitely has a level of that. But, that said, each game has it's own separate story/ world which you can enjoy without knowing the whole story.

Soooo, TL;DR version is: I hate things that are steeped in nostalgia relying too much on that. But I like this game series and the weird turns it can take so I'm part of the problem :D

Don't get it myself.

Find JRPGs to be some of the most boring games around, plus being some weird high school life simulator sounds awful.

I like anime, but not into the creepy, oddly proportioned school girls with big eyes... Something not right there.

The persona games are the more casual variants of the long running Shin Megami Tensei series which pioneered the whole Demon/creature acquisition genre well before Pokemon. P5 is actually the first in the series to drop the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona label and just go with Persona.

If you've never played or been interested in a SMT game before then this is unlikely to convert you. I find most JRPGs tedious but the SMT/Persona games are something very special and to fans of the series like myself the 94% MC comes as no surprise. Developer Atlus are a very talented (but small) Japanese company with the midas touch when it comes to story telling and turn based strategy dungeon crawling.

Can definitely see this being my personal GOTY.
