petrol prices

I was watching a great program on fuel and if we are hitting peak for oil then all the other means is short term, electric cars will just push up the need for coal and thats a dirty job and no good for the enviroment in terms of how much crap it puts out when burnt.

Hyrdrogen fuel cells need energy to produce the fuel and its very very expensive to input.

The program was History Channel Mega Disasters Oil Apocalypse

it already is in some garages - went to a somerfield/BP and the super unleaded was 120 and the diesel 130 !!!

Starting to bite now - i have overinflated my tyres slightly and never go above 80mph - im getting around 70 miles more per tank!

Peak oil, does not exist here and now.

*waits*

Electricity can be produced by many other ways than burning coal including renewable sources.

Right now? If we went over to leccy' cars over say...5 years Nuclear certainly wouldn't be ready for another 10-15 years due to the time it takes to plan, design and build. Renewable energy for the UK is wind power, which cannot be relied upon as well, it’s not always windy.
So coal will be the main source of fuel which we would still have to import much like oil, but will cost lots of money to the economy which...will do very little for the enviromet.

The BMW 760i Hybrid thing is very impressive but the jury was out on the effects of all that extra water in the air afaik.

Theres also tidel and thermal power sources. None of them have the ability to generate the power we all use however.

We do make use of tidal but very little, we are an island and do hve all that coast line. Although in Feb last year it was announced that a 4m project to create one off the Scottish coast generating 3MW's, but alas it has been underfunded due to doubts of its abilities, because wind is awesome, innit'? Geothermal would be poor here, I know Southampton aimed to be self sufficient after the oil crisis of 1976 but only 8% (or something around there) of the city is run off the geothermal plant there.

The UK has 1.5% of electricity produced by wind power and 4.5% is renewable compared to Germanys 20% from wind power. But the capacity is 2GW but the government wants an average of 600mw, but is only being achieve in the Scottish highlands whereas those in the south of England were operating as low as 5-10% capacity, blamed on high subsidies on poor sites, go Labour *woo*.

I think the answer is clearly electric cars with mini nuclear reactors. Limitless range, with zero pollution! : )

KABOOOOOOOOOOM!

Sad thing is if the government really took the plunge and put massive resources into funding these renewable sources (tidal plants, wind farms offshore etc) then they would easily be doable, fact is they underfund everything and nothing ever gets off the ground.
