But interestingly, in the winners table, it doesn't list a year, but a season
ie:
05/06 Steven Gerrard

This debate comes up every time there are awards dished out.

And the argument is in full force, as expected. It's rather sad that we can predict these things.

Irrespective of what period this award covers Ronaldo shouldn't be in there as since he won it last year he's been average apart from late last season, can't see why anyone would nominate him just for that.
VDS has never done anything apart from be behind a great defence, he can't even kick properly.
Giggs has had 3 good games.
Vidic is lucky the nominations were made a while ago as he's turned spazzy.
Ferdinand, captain of the best team last season, probably got votes for that.
Gerrard = Winner

Ireland = Winner

Game after game United fans on here want rid of giggs and he gets a nomination. He's had a fraction of the season cahill has.

I dont think any Everton player has done anything out of the ordinary.
They do punch above their weight, but are they some of the best players in the league?

No, not by a long shot, but then again, neither is Ryan Giggs but what can you do.

Giggs shouldnt win it, he would only win it on what he has achieved in his career.. so that should be some sort of lifetime achievement award, not this years player of the year.. he hasnt really done much good this season.

I can udnerstand Vidic/Ferdinand and Gerrard winning it because they are outstanding this year.

I think Cahill could be in with a shout, along with Jagielka.

Wenger on the awards:

"What I believe is that the PFA players of the year decisions are all made in February.

But February is not a really important time and that means the players who are rewarded are those who played well until February.

Now is the most important time of the season – April, May – so I believe these awards just reward the players of the first six months of the season."

The voting ended in march I believe, but he clearly believes it season based.

Not conclusive proof, but it's would suggest that at the very least that even if the voting should be annual it's heavily biased towards what happened during this season.

That is all I am going to say about it unless someone comes up with a conclusive answer and then I will admit my error!
