phoned in sick...went to a festival...got caught...can I get sacked ?

Where do you work where people are this rutheless with calculating and abusing their sick leave?

I work for network rail. Many see sick pay as there right and will use it as much as possible.
It was also the same at Royal Mail.

These people know the rules and the companys policys and will know what they can and can't get away with.

dude, just go in hang your head in shame, admit to making a mistake, promise it wont happen again, and give your boss some assurance that you will do you best to make it up to not only him, but your colleagues as well, you will end up with a written warning.

my ex works for tesco and they usually if presented with the right attitude kinda have to let people off with a lot more stupid things than that.

lesson to be learned is that when off sick, leave your phone off and at home, ps also avoid tv cameras my mate done this once and we went abroad to a rangers champions league game only for us to be shown on the official live coverage and seeing how his boss was a rangers fan he too was pawned. he did however bribe his way out with an official match programme and scarf.

Well, it was Rage Against The Machine.

Should have just booked a holiday though. Failing that, if you're skiving don't leave your phone with your mate. :p

I've called in sick when I wasn't before, I'm just laughing at the OP because he's an idiot for getting caught out in such a completely and utterly self-owned fashion. Thanks for the massive lulz builder22. :D

I've NEVER called in sick when I wasn't thank you very much.!

Neither have I.

It makes me wonder why people do it. Is it lack of thought? Lack of holiday planning? Lack of motivation? Hangovers? A case of "I really cannot be arsed to go to work today"?

If it's the latter, I'd hate to be in a job that I didn't actively enjoy doing for the majority of the time. It must really suck.

:(

dont believe it one bit. everyone has done it at some point.

Despite having two registered disabilities and a list of other minor health problems at my previous job I had less days off than some of the so called "healthy" people. I only had days off when I could not get to work, I.e. after an asthma attack.

Some people attitudes stink with regards to work. Employers pay you to do a job and you should respect that and yourself.

You have a good work ethic a lot of people don't. Whether or not the person is in a low end job that he/she may or may not like doesn't negate the fact that they've got a bad attendance record and lied and was caught.

If they hate the work they can leave, or just make the effort to abide by the rules. If they take the mick and are fired as a result I wouldn't expect anything but acceptance and "mea culpa" sort of attitude.

Theres some really small minded people on here, work ethic has nothing to do with it.
Immaturity does have its part to play, but the main reason is that they are working jobs where they have no respect for thier management because they feel undervalued and overworked, so they think "sod it, im havin a day off"

Poor attendance, is usulally high along with high staff turnover, which all points to poor management.

Well done! I would have done the same for RATM. You clearly have your priorities in life pretty well worked out.

Fair play to you sir! May you skip many more a work day in future (with a little more success!)

Regardless of poor management if you feel undervalued or overworked (as a lot of employees do) bunking off is not a solution.

You hit the nail on the head with the comment on immaturity. Therein lies the problem. A lot of the youth of today expect work to be easy and everything done or given to them on a silver platter.

i agree to some point with mattyfez........the management here in seagate have generally no regard or respect for the operators on the factory floor therefore the attitude from the operators is "f@:k you..why should i bother?" and up goes the sickness etc.
I have been off sick this last while with a liver infection...all my sicknesses have been genuine and yet when i go back i get a warning for being off more than 5 days in the year! you just feel penalised by the system and poor management

i agree with this totally, ive never rang in sick for a day off unless i was actualy sick but weve had a turnover of 4 staff on a 5 staff rota due to the above in just over a year and yes the manager is **** hes an ok guy but hes not a forceful enough manager.

i now how bad it is as im one of the 4 that left but i just switched to the other department, he now complains daily about anything at fault in the lab as its always my fault now... i think hes a bit bitter as i was in the lab for 5 1/2 years

This is not "A Brave New World" if people don't like their jobs they should do something else until they find something they do like. Then they probably wouldn't want to bunk off.

The them and us attitude of young people in rubbish jobs is nothing new but it doesn't have to be the way! Bad companies or boring industries retain only stupid people, who rise up the ranks (somewhat) and end up being irritating (middle management) bosses to young people who do not respect them. Those young people get out and do something they can enjoy or get stuck and end up being bad bosses to young people who don't respect them. Rinse and repeat.

This is the same reason wealthy people have attractive wives while the poor get uglier ;)

OP was a complete spanner for geting caught for this and I would definitely fire him but that's because i am mean.

Exactly. how can one expect 100% from staff when they dont feel like they are part of the team, part of the compay, and can make an impact on company performance.

Its all about creating a team environment, where people feel like they actually mean somthing, feel valued and and can make a contribution.

"Monday morning" sickness is generally down to people not being bothered about thier jobs, because they dont feel that they will be missed, and they probably wont be, thats why middle management need to start managing rather than simply being the arses that they generally are.

Positive reinforcement is whats needed rather than chastising low production figures.
