[PIC_THREAD] Wildlife, Animals, Birds, Zoo

Thanks. That was after about 40 trips to that site, getting down there before first light. Learned a lot about the owl's habits and about how far I could push the cameras.

And -that owl is stunning! Great light and angle

A Ruddy duck - was lucky to snap this. These escaped back in 1948 and the RSPB has supported an eradication programme. The females have all been culled. The males are anywhere between 40-150 individuals left. Light Reading.

Few more:

Amazing shots as always Andi.
I always find it hard to decipher between different warblers. Few species look very similar with varying tones of grey/brown.

Found a local reserve at my doorstep. This wren wasn't shy at all so was an easy shot to take.

Andi do you tend to manually select a focus point (central) or auto focus? Often finding I only have the briefest moments to take a shot and the camera is jumping between focal points due to branches.

I've begun the hunt for local owls. Few areas I've scouted. Imagine it'll be a fair few visits!

On Mull right now and internet real patchy. I tend to use either centre or centre + 4 in cross and move points manually with little joystick.

Do you guys use back button focusing? I tend to us it on motorsport and wondered if it would help with wildlife?

I've never tried it but might be too slow. Cars have a predictive route. To clarify if you held the button it would continue focusing and you can still snap whilst pressed?

I might try AI servo

Yes, hold the button have spot metering and it focuses what ever is in the spot so when you press the shutter button you get a instant shot. Works best with SDM/USM motors over screws.

Oh right. I had a different understanding of it. That's great sounds useful. Will test it out.

Thanks.

Yes. It's quite funny if someone tries one of my cameras and wonders why there's no af if they ha;f press the shutter button.

Also got one of the front buttons on the 1DX set up to switch af mode (ie servo or one shot) if held down.

Always nice to pick up one of these passing through my summer patch, very much a right time right place moment. It had the attention of a couple of the local black backed gulls so wasn't fishing unfortunately. Two-year-old female originally from Ayrshire according to the ring data.
