Pico 4 out soon?

There is something seriously wrong if you are saying a pico 4 doesn’t have as good an image as a CV1… that’s insane. How are you using it, virtual desktop?

I found in MSFS in particular I had to dial back VD’s sharpening significantly (down to 30% from default 75%) and that massively improved the image. I’m actually now getting something that looks almost as good as the G2 but with a more usable image due to the better lenses. Might be the same in iracing?

All I can say is that with virtual desktop in ultra and steam at 100% (something like 3164x3164 per eye), no upsampling options in MSFS, 150mbps and HEVC I am now getting a stunning image in MSFS which I am actually preferring to the G2. Performance wise it’s 33-34ish fps vs 39-40ish fps.

@lokiss fair enough, I have no experience of the Neo 3 link so can’t comment on it.

Just found this if anyone is interested in trying it out.

You can get USB Tethering Enabled on the Pico 4 and use Virtual Desktop wired! This really helped shave a few ms off of latency and really helped reliability. The trick is to get your Pico 4 into USB debugging mode (tapping the software version a few times, then going to Developer in the Pico 4). Then, connect a USB 3.0 cable and run this adb command:

adb shell am start -n com.android.settings/.TetherSettings && adb shell input keyevent 20 && adb shell input keyevent 20 && adb shell input keyevent KEYCODE_ENTER && sleep 2 && adb shell input keyevent 4

That will enable USB tethering, which Windows 10 should see a new network is connected. Virtual Desktop will prioritize this connection -- you can even turn off wireless after connecting with Virtual Desktop to save on some battery. I recommend putting that adb command in a .bat file to make it super easy to apply.

Might be interested?
That's completely awesome.

Just so I understand, the command you run, that's just within CMD?

My two issues with the Pico were the inability to use VD via USB, and the lack of support for OpenXR.
That looks like a solution for one of them.

Any idea about OpenXR support?

What is it about OpenXR that you are missing? Works fine for me with MSFS which is OpenXR exclusive.

using VD, well after the posts on here i unboxed it and tried again, i also tweaked the heck out of my wifi and whereas before i was getting 400mbps/i now got 866mbs, without a doubt it made the image better. 150mps hvec 40ms latency, its now within a grasp of being good enough but just not there judders on the turns and sometimes artifacts on the track. its probably just a very specific use case for me in iracing. no doubt over the coming weeks if more can be squeezed out of the cable approach it'll be good enough. i am prepared to wait :)

have boxed the pico4 up and it is being returned, its higher res than my CV1 but the picture is worse, i tried to like it but prefer the cv1. may try the neo3 link. did try halflife alyx etc and that was awesome, but if it looks like garbage in iracing then thats no good to me as im 99% in iracing, the compression is worse than screendoor imo.

was like comparing a dvd SD to a crappy encoded HD rip

next headset please
Something weird going on there. The CV1 is poop in comparison to the Pico 4. Did you do like me and forget to wear your glasses ;)

Can someone check something for me please. When looking at a dark image, can you see a giant lighter circle in the middle? Like 90% of the screen, there's a really large circle of light. It's really offputting when you notice it. The glares are pretty terrible.

Managed to get star wars squadrons working. Had to install the pico streaming assistant, but it's working now. Since that's a dark game, it's pretty bad with this headset. Too much glare, and this giant circle is annoying.

:) i did at first, that was last week, used some old contact lenses which i couldnt see properly, found some specs that were able to fit within the visor and the picture got better, got even better with upping the wifi throughput but its still just not there for me, a shame

Have you tried bumping the rate down? I get really bad performance on 150. My FPS tanks and the headset lags as I turn my head.

i dont recall seeing anything like this

Wi-Fi could still improve a bit perhaps, mine reports 1200 for comparison.

What resolution are you running at?

Glad it’s improved for you - it’s well worth continuing to play. I was initially very underwhelmed with what I was seeing in MSFS but the image now is stunning… very close to the G2. Just that performance overhead that’s the problem now rather than any concerns about image quality for me. I see a new GPU in my future!

I read the Pico 3 has not had an update in 5/6 months, that does bold well for the pico4 if they not doing regular updates.

The pico engineering team won't be anywhere near as big, or as good as metas. Expect slow software updates, and ongoing problems. This should be seen as a stop gap headset imho.

So my earlier suspicions were correct, there is a very significant overhead on running the Pico, the G2 will achieve approximately 25% better performance with the same settings.

I wonder will updates for the Pico reduce this. There will always be some overhead but 25% is terrible. Even 10% is bad.

Just checking a few things.

What router do you have? And Is your PC connected to the router with a network cable? Also is that router in the same room as where you are using the Pico 4?
What GPU/CPU do you have? Is the GPU the 3070 in your signature?
You say you are using 150Mbps at and getting 40ms Latency. Where are you seeing that Latency figure? Is it in the desktop app as you start Virtual desktop or in the Performance overlay?
In Virtual desktop settings, what other settings have you changed? What resolution setting are you using? refresh rate?

You see, running too high of settings for your computer and connection can make things look worse, a lot worse. I would say that 150Mbps is too high. Judders and artifacts are symptoms of that.
Wi-Fi could still improve a bit perhaps, mine reports 1200 for comparison.
Wifi 5 is 866Mbps, Wifi 6 is 1200Mbps.

So even though I was connected at 866, when doing wifi speed tests on any device, I was being limited to 90 Mbps. Turns out I had a bandwidth profile set on my dream machine limited to 100Mbps. :p Now I've removed that, I'm able to use 150Mbps setting without the horrendous lag.

I have been following this thread and as a complete VR novice, I am curious to know what people's choice would be for starting in VR at this point. Lots of posts are saying that its not much of an improvement over a Quest 2, but if you were going to buy one headset out of the Pico 4, Quest 2 or Reverb G2, which would people go for?
Thats why i held back, even if it is an improvement, it will be very minimal and not enough to justify an upgrade just yet over the Quest 2. I did some more pcvr last night having not used it in awhile and it still blows me away playing games like Alyx at how detailed the world is.

Optimisation is key really

P4 was picked up today for the return to rainforest, and then later the rainforest delivered the pico 3 neo link.

ok so one lap in iracing and the pico3 via display port is a keeper for me. the colours pop like the cv1 and there is no lag with apexs or head turn or compression artifacts.

It is night and day for me, after 4 years+ of the cv1 this feel like a successor, next to order some lenses and a £9 power adapter that plugs into the DP cable to keep the battery from draining.
