PlayStation 4 Pro in-bound

Only time I've heard my Pro was when playing First Light on HDR. It's quieter than my PS4 after I applied the Thermal Grizzly paste.

Wouldn't it be logical to assume that because the games weren't written for ps4 pro and also did not expect one to come out - there will be no throttling of faster hardware embedded in the software? At least for old titles. Obviously the games were written to run optimally on the slower hardware but why would anyone add bits of code to say that it cannot use maximum power available and only will use say 1.8ghz instead of 2.3 GHz.

It's not so much a case of games being written to explicitly not run on faster hardware....it's that some may have been written with the assumption that the hardware will not get any faster.

Example - I know this piece of work always takes a couple of frames to complete so I never have to deal with a case where it completes inside a single frame.

I think the information that "games will not take advantage of ps4 pro unless patched" as in "no increased res/ aa/ hdr/ fps" was misinterpreted and turned into "hardware will be throttled".

It is definitely throttled - source :

“We doubled the GPU size by essentially placing it next to a mirrored image of itself, rather like the wings of a butterfly,” he said. “That gives us an extremely clean way to support the 700 existing titles, because we can turn off half the GPU and just run something that's very close to the original GPU.”

Yes, that's why it's optimised to run smoothly on ps4 and that's why the details, res and fps settings are what they are and not any higher - this doesn't mean that there is any sort of hardware throttling code in place.

Same way as when games come out on PC are optimised for specific hardware, say 2ghz i5 and gtx 960, doesn't mean that running it 3 yrs later on a gtx 1080 and new i5 at 4ghz will throttle the new hardware to run slow - it might simply not use all of the power but unless you lock fps it's not going to make it run any slower and if the fps previously was locked but for hardware reasons not meeting the set threshold then running it on better hardware should yield the originally expected results.

Sounds almost like SLI or something which maybe explains why a patch is required to use the other half.

No it's a single GPU...and GPUs are just highly parallel floating point processors. The Pro basically doubles up on the processors (plus a few other bits)...so to emulate the standard PS4 it just switches off half the processors.

Yes, slower gpu and cpu requires less cooling and therefore produces less noise - thanks for confirming this amazing fact we had no idea about.

Amazon fire TV is a gaming console as well and produces 0 noise so maybe xbox didn't do a good job after all?

Do you have ps4 pro? Mine is quiet and yes, my hearing is fine, thanks for asking.

The difference in CPU and GPU between the original PS4 and XBOX One is very small yet massive difference in noise, an amazing fact you have overlooked amazingly.

And another thing you seemed to overlooked is that I have already stated I have a PS4 Pro, I've probably had more of the consoles to compare than you have.

in that case, the current games that are apparently running slightly worse on the PRO could be here to stay although if all games now released have a pro profile then it should soon be just a distant memory.

Has first light had other improvements or just hdr? I have 4k tv but no hdr
You can pick from hi-res / lower FPS, or lower-res / higher FPS options.

I believe it's 4K @ 30FPS, or 1080p @ 60FPS. My preference has been 60FPS mode - silky smooth!

After a noisy install (to be expected), mine is virtually silent. I have played hours of cod and bf1, and cannot hear a thing.

I am getting into this console more than I have most others. It is truly a stunning piece of kit for the money. And with the vast majority of future games being enhanced for it, I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever, other than the confusion around patches. However, that will go soon as all future games should have pro support baked in.

The PS4 Pro sounds the same as my 1200 where it wont drown out low dialog. The glossy PS4 model is insane though. Even the PS3 super slim sounds nothing like that. Maybe a tiny bit louder than the Pro/1200 and most of that is disc clunking.

That's the difference i have between mine, even haven cleaned out my PS4 launch day model and redone the thermal paste. So the upgrade alone was worth it, so it didn't sound like a hairdryer.

Those original models must have been infuriating for night gaming. As the loudest thing at night is constant button mashing. Heck even the Thrustmaster wheel fan drowns out the PS4 and the Thrustmaster fan isn't that loud.

Yeah i had to put it under my PC desk as on it everyone could hear it over my mic and it drowned out the sound of my games. Now i've got the Pro on my desk and hear nothing, loving the difference.

My original PS4 (bought a few months after launch) is nowhere near that bad. That said, the heatsink is prone to getting extremely clogged with dust as the fins are far too tightly-packed, so I cleaned mine out a few months back.

I think i've taken mine apart 3-4 times, cleaned and redone the thermal paste and it's still like it. It starts of fine, then slowly ramps up until it sounds like a Jet Engine / Hairdryer and literally is unbearable. I've wanted to replace it for a long time now, was just waiting for the Pro release to make it worthwhile.

Mines had new paste and a clean out, it's still noisy as hell on certain games. As long as it's not over heating I can live with it. Will no doubt end up with a pro in the end.
