PlayStation 4 Pro in-bound

I noticed in my standard PS4 menu I have a HDR setting, does this mean I get exactly the same HDR experience as you PS4 pro gamers? Only noticed it the other day:o

I have a 4k TV.

Yes, stanard PS4 supports HDR (it came via system update) so you can use it no problem as long as you have an HDR-capable TV.

Awesome, do I need to select a setting in game, been playing bf1 a lot, not sure that's had a HDR update yet though.

Also if this is the case what's the main advantage of upgrading to the PS4 pro?

Thanks

I'm not sure as I don't have an HDR-capable display so I haven't checked properly (I don't even have the Pro:p). Some games have HDR in options but I don't know about BF1, though it's certainly gotten a Pro patch.

About the advantage of the Pro, it's mostly to do with higher/more consistent framerate and 4k-ish res via checkerboard rendering. It's a bit of a hit or miss as devs are free to use the additional grunt in whatever way they see fit so results vary from game to game. Some get better textures/fx, some get higher frames etc. RotR, for example has a couple of different modes to select.

Thank's, think I will just get a pro soon anyway, especially having now got a 4k TV.

Yeah, it's not a bad move considering the Pro isn't that expensive. For me, the biggest advantage wouldn't be the res and fx but more consistent framerate, meaning that even if a game is limited to 30fps on the Pro, it's a lot less likely to drop below that than on the base model. It's most evident in Yakuza 6 which is close to unplayable on the base PS4 with all the drops and tearing (also, horrible jaggies). The last entry of my favourite franchise has been ruined for me unless I get the Pro (it doesn't exactly help that it's also one of the worst games in the series):p

Was a solution ever found to how one can have the PS4 working with HDR and a PSVR connected?

I don't want to have to keep swapping cables in and out if I bother getting a Pro.

Seemingly not judging by Neogaf and Reddit.

A friend who works in an industry doing some work for SCE (I know, I'm being vague on purpose) tells me that if you're contemplating a Pro, it's worth waiting until E3 for some promotions.

Cool, got mine today anyway as I had some gift cards and staff discount, so I got the pro for £304 including Horizon Zero Dawn, which I will sell as Ive already got it, so makes it quite a good deal.

Got that flickering black screen problem, managed to solve it I think by putting the ps4 pro into hdcp 1.4 in safe mode and switching hdcp off in the pro settings.

Hopefully Sony fix this issue.

Does having HDCP off effect picture or performance or is it just something used for apps like Netflix?

i noticed HDR available on my standard ps4 and have been using it for infamous second son (which i grabbed in the easter sale for a fiver). It seems really dark though, although it does look much better over all i have to say. I guess i need to fiddle with settings...??

I think you'll have to. I found Second Son too dark on my PC monitor even without HDR but using full range RGB.

From what I've heard, some games need calibration to look nice with HDR.

Been using it(HDR) on Horizon and I'm of the opinion that it makes screenshots look great but it makes dark scenes way too dark. Definitely not the game changing experience I was expecting after all the hype.

I'm not willing to crank the brightness up to max on my display just to enjoy one game in HDR.

Same here on my LG B6, looks great but its quite dark in areas, maybe its my settings on the LG B6?

Can anyone share what they use for HDR gaming who has the LG B6?

Got a USB 3.0 external drive, and for some odd reason it wouldn't format it.

I googled and to my amazement, was advised to tape the middle two pins for the cable that goes into the PS4 USB socket. It did work, wow, that is one odd issue. Not sue if anyone else has had issues with formatting and using external drives for PS4 pro but that was an odd issue.

I recently bought a 4TB external laptop drive for my PS4 and didn't have any issues with it. I take it you went to the proper settings on the PS4 in order to format it? I admit I had to google it as I didn't know where it was :p

Interesting fix for that problem though. How did you tape it?
