PlayStation 4 Pro in-bound

I completely understand the sense that this has been a weak console generation so far. Certainly everything feels like a minor improvement on what's come before. The last generation delivered a number of real innovations; always online, system storage and installable games, social features and matchmaking, digital app stores, achievements, motion controls etc. Also the last generation brought in the move to High Definition and digital outputs. On top of all even if multiplatform games were becoming a thing there were a barrel load of exclusives games and real cutting edge and innovative hardware on display.

List of games...

Of those 21 examples:
  • Only 5 are exclusive to a console; Halo 5, Forza Motorsport 5/6 (I think you meant 5 or 6), Forza Horizon 2, Killzone:SF and Destiny. Of which one, Forza Motorsport is due to be released on PC. Destiny is not exclusive to either machine or this generation however.
  • 9 have been released on last generation machines and are comparable. Indeed Minecraft and GTA V were released in the last generation.
  • Xbox Fitness is not a game and certainly not a killer app.

In fact that list probably typifies one of the challenges that so many games are multiplatform and therefore can be enjoyed on different formats. Including PC where often the games are cheaper, run better and include free multiplayer. Of course there are some very good and great examples in that list and you could have had real fun this generation with some of those games (indeed I loved and enjoyed GTA V, Titanfall, FH2 amongst others).

I would also say there are some generic or not very good games in that list. For example the 2 CODs, Watchdogs and Killzone. Arguably the Microsoft games; Halo, Forza and Forza Horizon aren't doing anything better than the previous entries in the series. I would add Bloodborne, Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon and Bayonetta 2 are arguably more worthy examples too.

Personally I've switched from using a console the most to being primarily a PC gamer again. Last generation I spent most of my time on the Xbox 360 but somewhere over the last few years have migrated to PC. Whilst I've always been a PC gamer I'm now choosing the PC version over the console versions in most cases. GTA V, The Witcher 3, The Division and Titanfall are all examples of this. The reality is the Xbox One is my most least used machine and the new strategy from Microsoft means I'm unlikely to invest in it much further. I suspect if there is substance to this story and this isn't just a revision of the PS4 hardware then Sony have had similar challenges to Microsoft and a contracting market is making them look at incremental hardware. I probably won't to buy into both Playstation and Xbox eco-systems again unless something changes.

There's no point pretending like these aren't quality games just because they eventually came to PC after periods of exclusivity etc.

There's also no point disregarding a game because it's "generic". Just because it's similar to what has come before doesn't mean it isn't great fun to play. In the same theme, just because a lesser version of the game was released on the previous generation also, doesn't immediately make the current gen version rubbish... It's still a great game on these consoles.

I can only imagine the few saying that the consoles are disappointing because their pc can run the same games are stuck in their bedroom and don't use the console in a lounge environment.

The X1 has been fantastic this generation:

Runs silently (unlike the vast majortity of pc's able to run the same games)

Integrates with Sky / AV amp / TV / Projector seamlessly controlling each of these through kinect speech recognition etc. "Xbox On", "Go to TV", "Volume up", "Go to Fallout 4", "Go to Netflix".... utterly brilliant when being lazy on the sofa.

The games are available cheap digitally (albeit through foreign stores), so no disc swapping as well, all pinned to the home screen.

No fussing with drivers etc that a Pc brings to the table, no waiting for Windows to load, no huge tower case in the lounge.

Many of the games ARE exclusive (lol @ Forza, that's only recently been rumoured for PC) and the one's that are timed are usually old news by the time pc get them. I don't see anyone naming PC only games here... probably because there aren't many that are any good.

Also, Kinect Fitness is seriously impressive. Sorry if it's not considered "a game", but the tracking is solid and the variety of content impressive. It can be used as a fitness tool which obviously ticks the box of what it's designed for.

Anyone saying their hasn't been a good quantity of quality games on PS4 / X1 is in la-la-land.

I absolutely agree there has been some classic and very good games this generation and as you say a PS4 and Xbox One (and Wii U) will likely been good buys. But it is valid to compare and assess the current consoles and what the experience has been since they were launched.

Of those 21 examples, 12 were released across formats at the exact same time (you could argue I was one off and Dead Rising 3 was an Xbox One exclusive for a short while).

With regards to PC I think it would be completely incorrect to say 'many that are any good'. The PC has a format has arguably been going through a golden period and there numerous great PC-only games.

We don't know what Sony are working on but I think incremental hardware upgrades will clearly cause some to question what they are buying into and may detract as many as it attracts. But we'll have to see.

I think we have had some great games this gen and there are some great games to come its just the hardware has not lived up to the hype :)

Ditto on this, the games have been great but the hardware has been distinctly underwhelming and has imo detracted from the overall experience.

You think this is a "golden period" for PC gaming? How long have you been PC gaming?

My earliest gaming was done on a mixture of Atari 2600, Amstrad CPC and then the Amiga and mixture of consoles. I first played the likes of Wolfenstein, X-Wing and Doom on College and Friends PC's in the early 1990's. I bought my first PC in 1996 and have owned one ever since.

I think the PC has been rocking for a number of years now, helped by the explosion in Independent game makers, different distribution channels, crowd sourcing and far easier play and play hardware and software installation. It often is getting the best versions of multiplatform releases is a bonus.

Maybe it lacks the great computer only exclusive PC releases of the late 1980's and 1990's, or the explosion in multiplayer gaming, or the excitement of the dedicated 3D cards. But is it not a great time to be a PC gamer?

Having dipped my toe back in PC gaming recently......yes, it is most definitely still 2002 as far as hassle with drivers is concerned.

That's funny because I formatted my HDD last week and the only driver I installed was a beta version of my GPU drivers which then keep themselves up to date anyway. It's a problem hugely blown out of proportion by peasants imo.

What are all these great pc exclusives?

The only games worthy of any attention relatively recently have been Starcraft and X-com.

Everything else is either half-finished indie nonsense, or DOTA / WoW / LoL. (i.e. mind-numbingly boring).

The consoles have done just fine.

lol, you had to use a beta driver... :o

There's your problem right there.

Also, why did you have to spend time formatting your hard drive? I've never had to do either of those things in all my years of Ps4 / X1.

Indeed, it's funny to think that many of the PC gamers on this forum never experienced the real golden era of PC gaming, 1992-2002! :)

So you thought I was a nipper! :D

I personally think there have been a few periods of great gaming in the lifetime of the PC and I think for some of the reasons given now and the past 4-5 years has been a great time.

That's not to say the the nighties to early noughties wasn't. Or that now is better or worse. In that time there was gaming experiences or genres you could only get on PC. And vice versa there were some great experiences only on consoles too, many of them in fact. There was a clearer definition between PC and console gaming.

I personally have far fewer bad experiences with drivers or software recently than I ever did under the old Win 9X (or even XP) operating systems.

This risks derailing this thread but you've got the most expansive gaming catalog anywhere. Virtually any game from the last 20/30 years can be run. Of course there will be caveats in that statement. And then all of the simulators or gaming experiences that can't be had elsewhere.

For me WoW would be a great Videogame and therefore be up there. LoL can't be knocked for what it has achieved. However I didn't want or plan to turn this into a PC vs Console debate but was inevitably touched upon when looking at some examples of recent multiplatform games. I'm not knocking consoles either, I've owned virtually all of them at one point in time and currently own everything from the last 3 generations. I just think there's validity in the suggestion this is a weak generation of consoles. And not just becuase they are relatively lacking in power and hardware either.

I had two games that would only run with mutually exclusive versions of the nVidia drivers for a while. Fun times.

It's something I don't have to worry about on PS4. I'd happily spend the money I just spent on upgrading to a GTX 970 on a PS4 upgrade.

As to this being the dark ages for PC gaming....seriously. There has never been such a wide range of games available.

I've been thinking about this more (sad life I lead!) and probably didn't explain myself in the right way.

PC release wise there are periods of games coming out on PC that could easily be classed as better than the last 5 years. Particularly the millennium that had the perfect storm of great games, exploding online gaming and maturing 3D Accelerators/GPU's technology.

But I think in addition to my earlier points, that it is also been a healthier market for certain genres. For example some great CRPGs, load of ARPGs and Space Simulators games. All genres that went through a lull for a bit. And all of these things have felt like it's good times, particularly when added to the financial figures on the state of PC gaming and publishers often generating more revenue on PC.

I'm not sure anyone was suggesting dark times for either the PC or console gaming.

Not in my experience. People keep trotting out this 'hassle with pc gaming' rubbish, it's so much easier these days.

Not for me - I've had a total mare in the last year. Last gfx card borked after endless driver issues and recently with my new card The Division keeps crashing on me. I wish I'd PS4'd it now. Whether PC gaming goes smoothly relies no small part on luck.
