So... Financial Blackmail to ensure your kids are burdened with you until you die, rather than have people trained in care look after you?

Just wow.

I just find it sad that you are of the opinion that your own flesh and blood would be like that. Both my family unit and my partner's are the opposite. Your parents brought you into the world and raised you. You would quite happily dump them in a care home for your own benefit?

No wonder no one is having kids because they are too selfish.

I find it sad that people who have gained 20+ years life expectancy and a greatly increased risk of debilitating illnesses like Dementia think it's still acceptable to burden their children with their care, which could last 20+ years, when they themselves (and practically ever generation before them) are very unlikely to have EVER had to do anything close to that level of care for their parents.

Yes your parents brought you into the world... But who for?

You prefer to lumber people who are not trained or skilled to deal with the often complex and co-morbid health problems with the responsibility, rather than have people who are actually trained for the job?

Do you also do your own surgery? Your own Plumbing? Your own Electrics? Or do you bring in people who are trained to deal with it?

You talk of selfishness but fail to see the elephant in the room.. A pair of adults decided to bring a new life into the world for THEMSELVES, because THEY wanted a child...

*edit* Also.. I was talking specifically and in reference to the blatant financial blackmail that was "they will look after me if they want any inheritance"

Care home is like £900 a week!!! Nearly 50k a year.

You could flip it round.
You expect your kids to owe you for bringing them into the world?

Don't you just want to see your kids happy?

I hope the UK legalises euthanasia before I get too old and sick, I don't want to burden my kids anyway.

This is something I very much agree with also... With the ever increasing life expectancy combined with a lot of the complex health complaints that often go hand in hand with that increased age, the pure randomness of whether you win or lose the "Dementia Lottery", I find it truly bizarre that we seem to have more humanity and compassion for our pets than for our peers and family.

Why is it ok to euthanize a loved family pet that now has very little quality of life, but it's so utterly taboo when it comes to people?

Seems so strange to me.

Its pointless having longer life expectancy without quality of life.

But we are on cusp of change.

Robotics, AI and virtual worlds.
Soon we will either have destroyed ourselves.. Or the rules and limits we've lived to until now will become obsolete.

Whereas I consider having kids so that someone can look after you in your old age is just as selfish as being a 'good person' due to being scared of hell or wanting to get in to heaven.

Tell me about it. :(

I spent the past 6 years caring for my father as he slowly declined with vascular dementia, severe COPD and a few other complicating factors until he became a shell of his former self, could barely mobilize at all and was continually confused and regularly very upset either from not being able to understand what was happening, or other times when he's asked about his parents - who passed away decades ago.

Earlier this year he took a big decline and ended up in hospital for a couple of months, after which time he was completely unable to mobilize anymore and was a marked decline in his cognitive capabilities and finally had to be moved to a care home specifically for Dementia patients as it was no longer possible to meet his needs here at home :(

Sign me up, but I find it unlikely considering how regressive this country seems to be becoming :(

Be interesting to know if anyone with kids who are more than a few years old would still want to have them today with the way things are?

Maybe I'm just getting old and doing the typical thing of thinking "it were better when I were a lad!", but the thought of my boys growing up in what the world is turning into both depresses and scares the **** out of me :(

Hard question to get an honest answer to.

Even admitting to yourself would be hard
