Plusnet Discussion Thread

After being let down by Virgin for a 3rd time and BT having updated their systems for a 2nd time, it looks like I can actually order fibre at my new property. Plusnet is looking like what I will get but I would prefer to use my own kit so looking at a separate modem and separate router set-up.

Reading up on it it looks like there are 3 modems: HG612, ECI and Draytek Vigor 130. Are any of these preferred over another? I'm not one to tinker to squeeze every bit out of my line. I prefer stability over all else so I wouldn't be looking to "unlock" anything or run special firmware.

Thanks!

No.

I stated that the speed of a connection doesn't really affect the cost of providing it. A 20Mbps VDSL connection requires all the same infrastructure and maintenance as a 70Mbps VDSL connection.

You made a statement about copper subsidising new technology. How does that make my statement any more or less true?

Openreach should charge onto the ISPs to pass onto customers as follow:

1-9 Mbps £2.99
10-19 Mbps £4.99
20-29 Mbps £6.99
30-40 Mbps £9.99
41-55 Mbps £13.99
56-80 Mbps £19.99

While a nice idea, in reality a line pull could see your price jump, a fault see it fall, customers won’t appreciate the variability and neither will the regulator, it makes billing more complex and takes no account of the cost to OR. But in an ideal world, you would pay per speed band, but that then begs the question why someone who downloads a few TB a month should pay the same as someone who downloads next to nothing, is that a conversation we really want to have? It’s seemingly not one that has worked out favourably for anyone elsewhere in the world.

Why? The speed of the service doesn't really affect the cost of providing it.

I would argue that the slower the speed of the broadband, the more costly it probably is to maintain and provide. Slower speed is normally due to distance, or outdated infrastructure. Leading to higher maintenance costs in terms of equipment and manpower.
Anyone with a decent speed is probably closer to the exchange and therefore less likely to have faults on the bit from the exchange to them.

Should people still on copper be subsidising new technology and fibre rollouts?
Yes, because the more Copper that gets replaced with Fibre, the better the chances of your 14Mbs being increased too.

I was on a cabinet in the countryside that would max 2Mbs to the house.
6 months after I moved, they updated it to a Fibre connected cab and the new tenant is getting a much improved broadband, even though they are "only" on the same old ADSL. Because the quality of the signal is now from the cab, not from the exchange to the cab plus the cab to the house.

That's what the ultimate question is I guess. Is PlusNet contacting BT notification of intent to leave without charges even if only part of your package is going up in price.
Plusnet will only tell BT that you're moving, the contract status is irrelevant to them. It would be up to you to ensure that you are out of contract and that you wouldn't be due any cancellation fees.

My transfer to Plusnet was completed today. Woke up to an email saying my phone line is working. No internet. Received an email in work at 7:45 saying my broadband is working. Saving around £288 quid a year by switching.

Have lost around 10mb in speed but i take it thats the DLM getting reset? 41mb instead of 50ish from BT

Maybe DLM disabled G. INP check if it was G. INP enabled if it does then you should get 50Mbps but if it was non G. INP then you getting less sync rate at 41Mbps

What is your full stats before at BT and after with PN. Want to see why it getting less sync rate between these two ISPs. In most case when switching over to PN from BT then it will be DLM resetted and sometimes DLM taking G. INP off and the line need to be stable for couple of days before DLM will applied G. INP back on.

Waiting game now to see what my line tops out at over the next month.

What's people's thoughts on Plusnet as as ISP?

Considering moving to them from Virgin, due to the new price rise, currently on 200mb & new price will be £51.
Plus net are offering around 50-70mb down & 15-20mb up for £28.99 for 18 month contract including phone line.

Very happy with them.

How reliable are the quoted speeds?

I'd be wanting to use my current Asus router so I assume I can just use the supplied kit in modem mode the same way as I do with virgins hub?

Have you had any issues with billing or connection issues? How long you been with them?

Sorry for all the questions, but having been a VM customer for broadband for 10+ years it's been a while since I've had to use another ISP.
