Plusnet Discussion Thread

How reliable are the quoted speeds?

Pretty good.

I'd be wanting to use my current Asus router so I assume I can just use the supplied kit in modem mode the same way as I do with virgins hub?

I don't think it has a modem mode. Get hold of a secondhand HG612 modem for about £15.

Have you had any issues with billing or connection issues? How long you been with them?

The only problems I've had have been a couple of line faults that weren't Plusnet's fault. Dealt with well enough when they happened. Been with them since Jan 2013.

Sorry for all the questions, but having been a VM customer for broadband for 10+ years it's been a while since I've had to use another ISP.

Due to what people say about plusnet, i would consider them first if i was to move to another isp.

Also this bt open reach stuff, from what i read just go with plusnet heh as bt open reach is the same for all isps that use bt open reach you see.

Also if i get quoted, i am just a new comer here in the world of isps.

It's depend how good is your estimated speed via BTw checker but sometimes once get connected and activated, you will never know what is your connection sync rate going to be? Is it G.INP enabled? Is it target SNR 3dB on it? Or Lower sync rate due to crosstalk etc.

I got 80Mbps for almost 4 years with PN but it now drop to 73Mbps due to more peoples connected in my cabinet due to crosstalk.

From doing my own investigation as I too am moving from Virgin to a BT based ISP and it is most likely going to be Plusnet, the Hub One cannot be run in modem mode. You need to get a VDSL modem like the HG612 (~£10 on eBay) and then run a router that can establish a PPPoE connection which I assume your Asus would but cannot tell you without knowing the model number.

EDIT: Stupid phone didn't quote and I'm way late to the party on this answer anyway!

I don’t think you can put the Plusnet router into modem mode. But a BT modem is only £20 on eBay and will work well with your Asus router.

No, you can't. They sent me one when I contacted them a few months ago. I spent a good while setting it up, but it's pretty ****. It's now sat in a drawer gathering dust.

Found an ECI Openreach modem and a Vigor 130 in the decommission pile at work yesterday. Should I have a preference for either?
The Huawei modems were the "preference" ones, ideally the last revision "3B". ECI should be fine if your cabinet is ECI.

I messaged PlusNet support a few weeks ago to remove interleaving on my line. Chat agent said it was done and 24 hours later I'd lost 5ms off my ping. Very happy.

My transfer to Plusnet was completed today. Woke up to an email saying my phone line is working. No internet. Received an email in work at 7:45 saying my broadband is working. Saving around £288 quid a year by switching.

Have lost around 10mb in speed but i take it thats the DLM getting reset? 41mb instead of 50ish from BT
Just connected the Plusnet home hub to check the speed and am now back up to 52mb down. Openreach and Asus connected again happy days. Think that's my line maxed out. Around 200m+ from the cabinet.

Pretty happy with the transfer to Plusnet from BT only a few hours downtime.

Mine change to Plusnet was exactly the same.
Phone line went live on Wednesday 3.47am, broadband connected at 8.57am. I also lost 10Mbps and had a really crappy ping. It resynced this morning and I have my 10Mbps back and a better ping.
Was nervous about switching but it was a good experience on the whole with Plusnet. The order tracking is a bit slow to update and they sent me 2 routers :D
I also will be saving £250+ over 18 months (old and new contract length)
Another thing to mention is support on the Plusnet forums was (for me) very good also. I also like the Members area better than BT, it's very simple and easy to navigate whereas BT's was a mess.
Very happy so far.

Has anyone had their cashback denied since joining PN? I just have as the network agency has not identified ourselves as the last referral for your transaction. Whatever that means.

Only thing I can think of is that my VPN was on when I signed with PN via topcashback. I knew at the time it hadn't registered my purchase so I had to put a claim in.

I'm currently with BT fibre and thinking of moving back to Plusnet. The concern I have is my cabinet is showing 100% full. Am I at risk of losing my slot in the cab if I change?

My cab was at 100% when I switched from BT to plusnet and it was fine. I went from fibre to fibre.
Also my nans cab is at 100% (according to codelook) and she didn't have any broadband at all, just a phone line. I got her on fibre using my referral from plusnet.

I applied for cashback via Quidco £40. It's still processing nearly a month later.

Where does CodeLook show cabinet capacity?

Are you referring to this?

If so the percentage doesn't tell you how full the cabinet is. In my case above it tells me that in my postcode 73% of the houses connect to cabinet P30 and 26% to cabinet P84. Those percentages will be the same irrespective of how full the cabinets are.

If you live somewhere where there's only one cabinet it'll always show 100%:-

To quote the notes from their site:-

The percentage is the proportion of properties in each Post Code served from the Cabinet. Longer roads may be served by two or more different Cabinets.

:D Then no wonder I had no problems then. I was reading it wrong. But to be fair someone on another site linked that site ages ago and said that was the way to check how full your cab is and I took that to be correct.
Least I know that is wrong now. Thank you. :)
