Plusnet Discussion Thread

It is a perfectly reasonable suggestion I don't think it's too outrageous like turn the router upside down or by giving it a fresh cup of coffee every morning makes it work better :P

When it comes to networking you can try anything!

The engineer sets it all up.

All I had to do was click chrome :P

Plusnet CS told me that if the engineer turned up and I didn't have a router he'd refuse to install and just leave. As it turned out he installed the modem and left without ever mentioning anything(or doing anything) about a router.

The router is not a necessary part of the installation as an internet connection can be established by setting up a PPPoE connection without the need of a router. The router quite simply routes the connections into 3 handy ethernet ports and a wireless point while dealing with CHAPS.

OR engineer is coming on Saturday, though I'll be out. Will he set it up using a Plusnet supplied router or would he use my Asus RT-N56U? Or will just install the modem and be done with it?

The engineers job is to install the openreach modem and openreach master socket, if you want to configure your own router it is pretty simple. You just need to log into your router setup and change your adsl username to [email protected] and the password to your account password and of course make sure it is set to PPPoE.

I can't guarantee the engineer would setup the Asus router but it can't hurt to ask :-)

I'd suggest using the Plusnet router in case you have any problems and have to contact them. The Plusnet router automatically configures the username and password the moment you plug it in to the modem(check automatic hardware setup under Connection Settings in your Plusnet control panel).

I think I'll be fine with the Asus, worked fine with BT Infinity. :) Still don't have the Plusnet router, should have been delivered by now I'd have though.

It isn't reasonable, and it's completely wrong. SSID name and the key don't do anything to speeds.

Btw turning the router upside down may let it vent heat better, or point the antennas in a better direction.

Sounds like an arse if they just leave without setting up everything.

I had everything installed and a free extension kit to.

Agree camalot but the routers themselves aren't actually supplied by OR only the modem and set up with a plusnet simple, you just need to plug it in and it retrieves the authentication details automatically using a system called TR069.

In cases such as WEP over WPA-PSK the wireless key can affect the performance of the connection WEP is shown to have less overall performance over WPA-PSK. Using wpa-psk may increase overall stability.

My suggestion comes from the idea that I am in area with xbroadband and the following routers are listed :

xbroadband12F324F
xbroadband2C324F
xbroadband52B34D
xbroadband16CA33

Now I'm pretty sure having all those routers with similar names is going to cause some kind of conflict if not confusion at the very least, so I always rename the SSID. I know that the SSID is also transmitted in each and every single data packet transmitted wirelessly so this does mean it would have some (minimal) effect on the connection.

They only have experience of BT Wholesale & BT Retail kit.

Similar SSID won't cause any confusion. You might have issues if all routers are in close proximity, broadcasting on the same channel.

All fitted was a nice engineer.

My old speed was about 9-10mb.

He told me my sync speed was 80/20, but will get reduced a bit.

estimated speed was 65/18 approx

Happy chappy so far.

That looks like you have got a pretty healthy connection; if you want you can setup a PPPoE connection and it will allow you to test the full throughput of the line :-) which router are you using?

You're making all this up. It's utter nonsense.

The encryption key and encryption scheme/method are two different things. If the encryption scheme will affect performance is hardware dependent. WEP is no longer part of the specs so doesn't need to be implemented in hardware, and may be perhaps 1% slower. In the past WEP and WPA would be done in software so WPA would be slower. Not that this is relevant at all...

Why are you pretty sure that similar SSID's would be a problem? Because they aren't....

Alright no need to shame people's posts :P

Regardless I would still change it from the default, I mean why wouldn't you.

But I am starting to regret getting into this now.
