Plusnet Discussion Thread

Phone line all installed, OR guy said once the fibre is in people in my area have been getting around 70mbps though I've been quoted 35 from Plusnet. I'll be happy to have broadband again, not that tethering off my phone is too bad.

Anyone had the extension installed?

Any difference in connection speeds compared to plugging directly into the master socket?

I'm trying to decide whether to get OR to move te current master socket location or not...

The 'extension' is just a long ethernet cable routed to somehwere else in the house so you will not notice any real difference.

Quick question for bobpullen.

I'm currently on BTs unlimited fibre package but considering moving to Plusnet to save some money whilst the 6 month half price offer is on.

As I already have a BT openreach modem installed will I still need an engineer visit and would there be any downtime of the service whilst switching from BT to Plusnet (apart from on the day of switchover). Thanks

Hope you don't mind if I step in for Bob Beelzebub,
as long as you are switching over to PlusNet using a MAC key the only downtime you will see is when the line switches over from BT to our Network.

In fact when you lose connection with BT that is a likely sign that your order with PN has been completed :-)

In regards to the BT Openreach installation, an engineer appointment may still be necessary just to negotiate the connection and make sure that everything is installed correctly at the property / cabinet / exchange.

Engineer has just been and set it all up. About 30 minutes downtime while the engineer was doing all the work at the cabinet and in the house.
Plusnet Internet was working as soon as he plugged the router in.

Went from this with Sky LLU ADSL2

To this with Plusnet Fibre

I assume it will get a bit faster over time as well. Very pleased so far :D

That's good to hear, may keep the master socket where it is and have them run the 'extension' to where I want it, will they route round the outside of the building if I ask nicely? Do they install it as a socket or just a simple rj45 connector?

Noticed I'm getting much slower speeds when using wireless on my devices. Only 35Mb in speed tests and downloads even when it is right next to the router, 70Mb using ethernet.

Logged into the router and seen that the wireless is only working at 65Mb.
Is this normal for the Technicolor 582n?

Have checked this guide on the plusnet site and it shows the wireless at 130Mbps. Is there a setting I need to change?

Sometimes the wireless N reduces the transmission rate if it is not able to broadcast a strong signal. Lowering the transmission rate increases the signal strength. Try changing your wireless channel to 11 and normally it should boost the transmission rate up.

Other tips include

Shortening the SSID
Changing the default wireless key to just letters
and setting WPA VERSION to WPA2 only

Thanks, tried all that and still at the same speed.

I have a 300Mb Wireless N adapter getting delivered tomorrow for my laptop. I'll give that a try to rule out any of my current adapters.
If not i'll buy a better router.

I have rarely seen speeds above 65mbps using 150mbps wireless adapters as these are draft N and not the full standard 300mbps that we use today. To be honest it is perfectly okay to setup your own router if you absolutely must have ultra-fast zero latency wireless connections. My router is 300mbps but my laptop doesn't get more than 65mbps and it has a draft-N wireless card.

Modem arrived, T - 1 day to installation date. But Im going to be at blooming work all day. And the wife is not technically minded. So wont have a clue how to set up the router and will be cursing me via text. That she cant get on the internet. lol

Just tell her to follow the instructions that come with the router to the letter. It is really easy. Even the cables are colour coded.
