Plusnet Discussion Thread

had my plusnet package installed yesterday.... very impressed :D

had a really good chat with the openreach engineer too whilst doing the installation, top bloke.

first of all he was shocked at the size of my pc and screens haha xD then we had a conversation about modem location and got him to make up an extension cable from the master socket so i could have the modem in the living room on my A/V rack next to the router (where the vm box is). had a good laugh when we couldn't get any signal and he had swapped the cables round on one end by mistake haha!

did the test and everything was A-OK! he was a bit concerned about the cable going from the hall to the living room as I said just leave it on the floor and I'll tack it up later, kept looking at me as if I was mad. doesn;t normally get people saying, "yea just set it up over there and leave it on the floor... don't worry i'll organise it all later". this he was surprised because he didnt have to tack up the cable, mount the modem and all that usual stuff haha.

I'm on the 75 down and 19 up so i'm pretty over the moon with my speed results :D though when he did the test with his handheld my line was good for 80 down and 30 up haha!!!! so am wondering why i'm only getting a bit over 16 down, could maybe be the testing server i was using? but hey I aint complaining!

jumped on BF3 last night and was streaming to twitch.tv in 720p, on the server i had the lowest ping @14ms (while uploading my stream to twitch using 2.5mb) and it was rock solid. there were no ping spikes or anything that i was getting with a lower bit rate with my 2.9mb virgin upload cap.

One very happy customer..... so far ;) lets hope it stays this way!!!!! :D

EDIT: oh yea.... one thing i was disappointed about was the modem is white xD and everything else on the A/V rack is black :p ..... out comes the paint xD hahahaha!

Upstream IP profile is 20Mb/s. The modem has upstream QoS enabled which reduces the speed by a megabit or so, you're pretty close to max.

is it true that you don't need ADSL filters on all the other phone extensions in the house - When you have Fibre?

Yes. They install a filter at the master socket.

One more question.

As they supply you with a modem - If I wanted to use my own router.

I wouldn't need an ADSL Router right? just a normal Wireless Router?

Thanks

You need a router with an Ethernet WAN port that's capable of PPPoE. That should cover everything sold as a cable or FTTC router.

You can buy routers with a VDSL modem built-in, but I prefer having the separate modem even if it does require a separate box.

yea the package is up to 19mb up so that's fair enough :)

nope, the modem must be plugged into the master socket. which the engineer will replace and the filter is built into the socket :) so you have the normal phone port and a modem port above it :)

this is correct, I told the guy I wasn't going to use the tacky thing i got sent as I have the asus £115 one xD

just like VM, you plug an ethernet cable from the modem into your router, and then in the routers WAN setup you change the settings to PPPoE and type in your username as "usernamehere"@plusdsl.net and password for your account. save, reset router and BOOM! sexy internets

Freddie - That is quick! :)

I was talking to the bt guy and he said my line supports upto 95 m/bit which is right on the limit of what an isp can support and it helps that the cabnit is just on the other side of the road and the copper wire to the box is high gauge.

I haven't teated upload yet but I think i can get around 2 m/byte which is silly quick when i think of how fast my dial up was 10 years ago.

I am currently with BE and I pay the bill (Only Internet Connection) using my debit card and my parents pay BT landline bill using their card as well.

Is it possible to do the same on Plusnet?

You can pay by card but there's a £1.50/mnth surcharge. Whilst it doesn't apply to you, those who do take line rental will be expected to set up a Direct Debit for payment.

If I raise a ticket on the portal, would I be able to find out information on my cabinet to see if its being upgraded to fibre?

This should tell you all you need to know. It's unlikely we'll be able to provide any more detail.

Can you use your own router with Plusnet Fibre?

Yes, you can use any PPPoE router with an available WAN port or a VDSL-compatible modem/router.

I'd keep the Openreach VDSL modem and original router handy though in case you ever need to report a fault.

I'm using a Technicolor TG799vn VDSL modem/router on one of my lines at the moment and a Huawei HG612 Openreach modem and Netgear WNR1000 on the other. I've used a Zyxel P2812 VDSL modem/router in the past too but bricked it attempting a firmware update

Best regards,

Do you know if you are on fastpath or interleave?

As above I had Plusnet Unlimited Fibre installed yesterday.

It's profiled at 40/10 at the moment rather than 80/20. Does anyone know if this will get fixed automatically, or do I need to chase it?

I'm still using the FTTC connection on my other phone line at the moment and that manages roughly 66/16, and it has been as high as 72/16 in the past.
