Plusnet Discussion Thread

PlusNet now want to arrange a second engineer visit regarding low speeds on FTTC. They haven't accepted the first guys explanation of 'it's a long way from the main pole' and say the fault is still present.
Here's the first engineers comments, can anyone interpret whether the attenuation figures correspond to distance? I've driven the route the overhead wires take and it's 1500m to the green cabinet exactly.

Engineers Comments
Service restored, FastTest2 and Eclipse test OK and demonstrated to EU Pqt failed due to Huawei vccm cards fitted due dslam, cct in synch at 0.8/8meg, this is slightly below predicted values as property is approx 0.5km beyond dp, service test completed ok with no errors, line loss 36.7db, ac balance 57db

Summary
Rejected clear in BTW, as fault is still present.

Brother got his installed yesterday. Engineer came quite early an did the job really quickly, but after an hour (at around half 2) the internet was still not working. Called up Plusnet and they said it's because the engineers didn't sign it off yet and should be up at around 6. It still didn't work, so I popped down again the next day and noticed it was an authentication error with the router. Tried manually editing the username and password but that didn't work. Factory reset didn't work either. Tried out the spare Asus RT-N53 router I had and with the same settings it instantly worked. It's up and running and he's happy with the speeds, but it took nearly a month to move over (Sky gave the wrong MAC key, and the Plusnet system didn't automatically book the appintment, customer service had to manually set the order up). Just hope there's no more problems with it now...

Similar story with me, although it took a phone call to support to get up and running, and a pin in the back of the router to factory reset it. If you had phoned support they would have got him up and running on the plusnet router in 5 minutes I reckon.
As for sky, even though it was supposed to be a live line takeover, they cut me off at midnight so the phone/internet was off long before the engineer arrived.

but it took nearly a month to move over (Sky gave the wrong MAC key, and the Plusnet system didn't automatically book the appintment, customer service had to manually set the order up).

There wouldn't have been any need to have gotten a MAC key from sky if everything was being moved over to plusnet as they do all the work (I queried all this before I signed up, and they said that if you're moving either from sky or one other provider you don't need to get any codes to move the service over).

It also looks like the engineer was incompetent since they're supposed to make sure everything is up and running before leaving (when my install was done, the engineer moved the socket to where I wanted it, put on the new faceplate, wired everything up (after he'd retrieved an OR modem since he didn't bring one up with him), went to the cabinet to do the work and came back to check that everything was up and running which included making sure that the internet light on the router was green).

When he was signing up they said he needed a MAC code from Sky before they can get a installation date booked. Could it be because he was moving from Sky ADSL (which was previously O2)?

All the engineer did was check with the BT VDSL modem after the install, which connected fine (all green lights on that). He left after that though, as he said it was up to my brother to sort out the router, which was different with my experience as when I had BT Infinity installed my engineer also sorted out the HH3.

Yeah just gave that a go Uther, that seemed to do the trick and got the router finally working. Strange as I tried a factory reset via the router page but I guess the reset button at the back does a proper reset. Although my brother wants to keep the RT-N53 as he saw how fast 5GHz wifi is :p. Being in East London means there is tonnes of 2.4GHz wifi networks around...

My move was from sky ADSL as well, but it might have been as you said because it was it originally an o2 line before sky bought it out that they requested a MAC code.

Just done it :O £126 cashback and the stonking price swung me to plusnet over Zen, Hope i have not made a mistake, Currently using BT infinity for last 2 years without missing a beat, 77mbps down 19up 24/7

Does any one use the "pro" add on and have they seen any improvement ? only just done the deal online and given them my MAC so it should be middle of next week i change over. Only reason for the change is wanted a Static i.p

That's a tea-spitting amount of cashback :O

Everything I've heard has pointed to the Pro add-on not being worth the money. I've never purchased it and have not noticed any performance issues, poor latency during gaming etc.

Yep and it tracked in about 5 mins too :) now saying payout in 4 weeks.

I spoke way too soon. My internet speed has just dropped to 2mbps on all devises and restarted everything no change. Does BT know i am off lol. just downloading a 70mb saying half an hour

Edit: Back up to normal speeds... Weird

My Quidco £140 not only tracked by was paid last week! That basically covers the 1 year up front line rental I paid.

Also I haven't got the "Pro" extra but any torrents I've tried have downloaded at 100% full speed.

:D I dont use quidco guess i could but the MRS works as an admin booking flights and hotels for staff quite a lot and topcashback works well for that ;)

Hoping i get the same speed as my infinity as i get 76 minimum however plusnet are saying 52....... fingers crossed i dont loose 20mbps in the swap

I've just moved house and it appears I have a phone line in my house (with the master socket located in an awful place), so I'm looking around to see what ISP's are decent for gaming.
I used to have VM cable in my old house and the jitter on the connection at times was horrendous making online gaming almost futile.

How does plus net fibre stack up in regards to pings and jitter? Especially with regards to gaming?

Plus net's prices seem good and their support is decent enough from what I've heard.

My line apparently supports upto 44mb according to BT checker, but is it worth going for Fibre Extra for an £5 more (3.99 v 8.99 on offer)
If I go for Line saver for 12 months what happens after this time does it go upto £15.95?

Also what router is decent with Plusnet? I need something which can accept more than 16 MAC Filters, which my Billion 7800n can't do.

Hard to call. They may let you downgrade to 40/20 if your line doesn't perform well enough to warrant keeping the 80/20 package. Contact them before ordering.

Yeah, whatever they're charging for monthly line rental at the time.

Out of interest, why do you need MAC filtering?

Convert that Mbps to MBps. That's 5MBps vs. 5.5MBps. You'd have to be crazy to spend the extra IMO. In terms of the actual broadband service, there isn't a difference aside from the speed.

After 12 months you can go for Line Rental Saver again if desired.

My line can apparently get 43, but they advised to go for the up to 38 package, which I'm quite happy with TBH.

Had my fibre activated on Friday. Started at 11 Mb/s download and 16 Mb/s upload. By the end of the day the download was 16 Mb/s. Yesterday it was 25 Mb/s and today 35 Mb/s. Plusnet said it takes up to 10 days to stabilise. They expect up to 48 Mb/s.
