Pokemon GO! (2016)

Went out cycling for an hour this afternoon, even went adventurous and went through some woods and only found a, Pigeotto in there and a, Jigglypuff on the road at the end of the woods but he got out my ball and ran off. I got to level 5 though, so I might nip to, Tesco later as an excuse to look at the local gym ;)

You've clearly not played Ingress.

The point people are making though, is that about a dozen people played Ingress, it wasn't popular and wasn't worth significant investment. The idea may have been good but there was no real hook, no associated brand etc. to interest the non gamers.

This already has a market of millions upon millions, a bit of development time into something like a more involved PVP system is now a more viable proposition. It won't be instant and it may well not appear but there will certainly be a stronger case for it, especially if you could monetise healing potions etc.

Also, what's to say that Ingress wasn't getting ignored because the developer was busy with Pokemon, which would obviously be a bigger draw.

(edit, yes I'm aware it was slightly more popular than my exaggerated dozen but not anywhere remotely near the level of Pokemon, nor with the hugely sellable brand)

Phew! Just back home after a little Pokémon hunting adventure! :)

I left the house, not actually to get Pokémon, but to go get food for work this coming week as I'm backshift and wont be able to get anything from the canteen. On the way to the bus stop I dropped off my Raticate at the gym near my house, since my team was controlling it. On the way to Asda, I decided to get off the bus early and walk along to it via the shore front. Almost immediately after getting off the bus I came across a Jinx, which was a new one for my collection. I passed numerous pokestops on the way to Asda, a 2K egg hatching in the process (alas only a Weedle) and caught a Shelder just off the beach.

I had literally just got to Asda, when I noticed a couple sitting in a car outside a library (which was a pokestop) opposite the supermarket. And they had set up a lure! I changed course and went straight to it. There were loads of pokemon there'd I'd never came across till now, like Syther, Growlite, Geodude, Voltorb. None of which I could find sadly. I did get a ghastly, meowth, male nidoran and Staryu though! I would have got a Sandshrew and Machamp as well if the damn app hadn't flaked out on me and crashed when I threw the ball at them. Oh well...

After shopping I hopped on the bus back to my town, stopping off at a Greggs along the way to pick up a free hot drink and free baguette + cold drink lunch (thank you rewards app) and walked the rest of the way home. I had literally walked through the door when my two 5K eggs popped! And I got a CP 229 Tangela, my new highest level, and a Voltorb.

It was an amusing way to pass the time and some decent exercise for a change, but damn did it hurt my phones battery. I left the house with 100% charge. I arrived with 18%. And that was about 3 hours or so of use.

Ingress has been around for 3 years and has millions of players. There's a point to it as its a direct competition between the 2 factions, with a global map to keep up to date with the score. There's a point to visiting the Portals to collect keys to link them, and a purpose to being strategic about how you link them to maximize the MU Field size.

There's also a story of such with an ongoing blog updated based on how the game progresses. There's direct player to player and faction wide chat. Plus Missions which you can do which are designed around following routes for local landmarks and learning about them. You can also submit those yourself as well as following others.

There's none of that in Pokémon. Even though it would have been a simple port. And even though its a far more involved more thought out game Ingress has basically not changed at all since it was launched.

The only advantage to Pokémon is being able to play it everywhere, rather than having to be at Portals. But beyond that it's a very very simple game and I see zero reason why they would change that. Its Paper Toss with Pokemon characters instead of bins, yet its already probably the most successful App ever. If the basic simple game is so successful, why add to it rather than just monetise the existing game.

The reason is simple, to keep people engaged and increase opportunity for monetisation as time goes on and the novelty factor wears off.

Yep, the success if phenomenal but I can imagine it dying off before too long if they don't develop it, maybe they won't but that would surely be a missed opportunity. And its not just the in game stuff they can make money from, I would imagine if the Pokemon Go Plus was available right now it would be flying off the shelves, but by the end of August when stock is expected?

I have to say, this is a good augmented reality game, the catching and hunting for new pokemon is great.

Sadly the combat system is atrocious, and the way you make your pokemon stronger is even worse. Why do I have to catch 50 spearow to evolve one into a fearow. Makes no sense. Why can't I train them in another way.

The combat is non-existent, you just mash the screen and hope for the best. And the only way you can actually get into a battle is at a gym, where the creature defending the gym is like 1000cp and your own highest pokemon is like 300cp, leading to certain defeat.

I can see this game loosing a lot of players once people realize that there isn't really that much do do outside of catching pokemon. Even some kind of mini games that I can do to train my pokemon would be great. I don't really have any attachment to my squirtle when you know that you will find a higher CP one sooner rather than later, and you cant make them stronger or evolve them without catching like 150 squirtle.

I'd love for the game to get better, but for things like turn based combat, trade and PvP, why aren't they already in it? It has been in the trailers for the game from almost a year ago. The only reason I can think as to why those things arent in the game is because they have decided not to bother.

There's so much they could do to it. Add collectable gym badges in big cities or other important locations. Add a story with Team Rocket trying to take over the world and you get to battle random CPU rocket agents that appear on the map. Make collecting the actual Pokémon more than throwing balls at them, actually let us do it like the game where we have to use our own pokemon to weaken them first. Would make all those potions and revives we get have a purpose. Give us the ability to trade pokemon! This is just stuff off the top of my head, I'm sure there's loads more they could come up with.

Maybe you're right, though hopefully not. Perhaps they decided to just get it released while they finish adding features, the version on the play store shows as 0.29.2, I know its just a number but it still makes it sound like a a very early version.

My point is the seeds to allow any of that to happen aren't there. Not even a hint.

Its only just been released, and I imagine the focus is on getting it stable.

Ingress has been out 3 years nearly and is only on v1.104.00.

If they are going to change the battle mechanic, why go to the effort of building a whole new (crap) one, rather than use the long standing existing one or leave it out until it's done? They have put a lot of effort into building stuff.
