It's the socket size, it would take up most of the board

Nah. It's the VRMs it needs. Decent high end boards will probably be 12 phase. That's an awful lot of VRM circuitry to try and cram on an ITX board.

Then there's cooling. X79 boards get very hot, so need adequate cooling.

There are MATX boards coming though.

Depends if 6 core can do 4.7-4.8 on water. Like i stated in few posts i would plan to run it with HT off just pure 6 core power. That should set me for few years. And i would buy that intel OC plan like i did for my 2500k and just run it at maximum till end of warranty :D

Only reason for upgrade is that my 2500k got only another 6 monts of warranty left and since its been running at constant 1.46v core @5ghz it eventually will die :P

Im going to see what the reviews show, if i get a decent gain from my 2600k then i may do.
My 2600k only manages 4.2ghz these days its had a hard life so far.

It's all about threading and core support.

In certain tests a Westmere hex will beat your 2600k. In others where cores are not called for much your 2600k will win..

So basically unless within a week we get games that thread on 8/16t then the Haswell Es are going to struggle. Expect many tests to show the 4790k level pegging..

If you need the cores and use apps and programs that thread well then Haswell E will no doubt be the fastest platform on the planet right now.

It's just whether you find that exciting or not.. A couple of weeks back I did some research. I documented how the latest games thread.

The results looked good. Then I disabled two cores and ran the Tomb Raider benchmark again. The results were absolutely identical.

I've just not had the time to go back and run everything again on less cores. I will though....

I will consider upgrading when my current setup no longer allows me to play the games I want to play at 120hz with the level of detail I want and I know the cpu is to blame.

Voted maybe, ill likely hold out to see what skylake is like. If it's another pasted chip like ivybridge/haswell i wont go near it. So could see me moving to X99 then.

4.2ghz?? what you done to it?

x99 is very very tempting but overkill for me

No need for me to upgrade. Ive only been on Z97 for a few months. Hopefully this rig wont need any upgrades until well into next year

I won't. What I've got is too close in performance.
I'm only really interested in more or faster cores.
It doesn't look like they'll be significantly faster. So only the 8 core is interesting & I'm not paying £800+ for one.
If they follow up with an 8 core equivalent to the 3930k/ 4930k - ie a lower clocked £400 8-core then I will be interested.
But for anyone that doesn't have a 6-core Intel & really has a use for threaded CPU power, this looks like a good platform.

nope i wont early adopt any more, DDR4 as any new ram coming to the market is over priced, when it hits the lows that DDR3 did (i got 16Gb for £35 from OC, though i think about £80 is a fair price).
Im not a bencher, i will only ever run one GPU and prefer MATX boards so im not sold so far, if i can get one cheap off the MM in 6 months i might take the plunge though.

I'm still using my i7 920 @ 3.2Ghz Titan system I purchased from OcUK a few years ago.

This should hopefully be a good upgrade for me.

Will OcUK have Extreme Systems deals available on launch day? I rather let you guys do all the hard work again :D haha!

If the prices are a bit too high, I will make it myself and re-use components (case/psu) from my current system.

I shall be sticking with my i5. For a single GPU I don't need anything more at the moment.

I will be looking to upgrade when the hex cores and DDR4 arrive on the mainstream socket, at a reasonable price. I guess that will be a few year off yet though.

Nope, Intel are taking us for a ride, another expensive chipset with the 6 core chips exclusive to it, they should be mainstream by now.

We need AMD to come good and force Intel to compete with faster chips with more cores, at mainstream pricing.

Nope. I can't see it being faster than my 5ghz 2500k still. Still waiting for something to obliterate that.

Monitor is next on the upgrade list if I stay with PC (if GTA5 lives up to its reputation...).

I'm looking to update my system soon but I am somewhat cautious as I'm not exactly swimming in cash so if the reviews are good for the price I will definitely be taking the plunge, if not I'll just still with current gen haswell and put the money I save towards a new headset :D. Still running first generation i3 so it will be one monstrous upgrade

Not for the prices they are asking. I use my computer for occasional gaming and general internet usage.

What I have is good enough for my needs.
