Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

This is going to sound a bit of an odd post, has anyone experienced stones getting stuck in the breaks with a Boxster / Cayman / 911? Only reason I ask was I've had this happen twice within a week now and I getting a wee bit nervous as a have PCCB's on mine.

The first one ended getting stuck between the hand brake shoes and the disk, so I had to strip it down to remove the stone and the second one worked it self-free after 5 minutes.

As a matter if precaution I have booked it in at the dealers at the weekend.

So I will go and have look around to cars to see what stock they have floating about. :D

On a completely different side note, my PSE has become really loud now, more so then when I first got the car. It really does sound impressive and does hark back to old Porsche Le Mans / race cars. :D

Decided to drop an email to local Porsche dealer asking about Michelin Super Sports in 235/35/19 (Michelin says no n-rating)... but I thought I would ask the question... especially as it seems to be Porsche's favourite at the moment... they even advertise it.

As the Michelins are currently not "N" rated, id go with the Google Eagle F1's over the Pirelli P Zero, as they are a much better tyre.

If you can wait till the new Boxster / Cayman are announced or should I say 718 if rumours are to be believed. We should see a new wave of "N" rated tyres due.

But the PS2s are n-rated... so I think they're becoming a favourite.

I used to like GY Eagle F1s... but from the last generation, the symetrical ones, I haven't experience with the new ones.

I've heard bad things about the Pirellis from quite a few people, so will avoid them.

I love Conti SportContact 5s on my BMW 320d... fantastic tyres... but they don't seem to be n-rated in the right size... only the CSC3s. I hear they're quite good too.

Still umming and ahhing because I can really feel the difference between tyres and want good ones.

They're going to need doing before the service and 111-point check at the end of Oct or Start Nov... the rears are sitting at about 2.5mm and the fronts around 4mm

Porsche have quoted Mobil 1 5W50 for the next service (6 years, 24k miles).

All searching I've done shows 0W40 or 5W40 and the last service invoices show 0W40 being used in the UK.

I'm in the Poland for a couple of days and thought about buying the oil + top-up while I'm here... 150 quid for 7.5L Porsche price vs under 50 quid while I'm here.

I just wanted to make sure they will actually use 5w50 and not 5w40... maybe the admin making the quote picked the wrong option from a drop-down list or something?

As of course, if I buy the wrong oil now, they won't use it and I'll have a bunch of oil that's useless to me...

:D

Thanks

EDIT: Found one place that shows Porsche recommend/approve 5-40 and 5-50 for down to -25*C

I've been doing some daydreaming of late and have been looking at the bottom end of the 911 spectrum on PH and autotrader. I'm in the lucky position of not needing a car at all for work purposes for 2 years from October. This has set my mind racing to chase the dream of a 911. Money is tight as far as purchase price goes. Realistically anything above the trade in of my S2000 (07 plate 60k private sale might get £12k for it with a following wind) would be financed, but with the limited use I can't see running costs (disasters notwithstanding) being too outrageous compared to the S2000. I see my options as follows:

1. Step away from the Porsche thread and stick with the S2000 which has been beautifully reliable and is great fun all round - could even spend some cash sprucing it up a bit.

2. Trade for a 996. Whatever I can get for the trade in price that isn't totally ruined. Any colour any shape. Keep it as a bit of a project. The aim of the 911 would be to keep it as a forever car, so I shouldn't worry about a little work right? Manual 996.2 coupe with high mileage would fit this criteria I think.

3. 996 C4S - this is what the heart wants. Manual and convertible - will cost more to buy, but it would be a keeper! Residuals might not be great, but that shouldn't be a concern for the forever dream car right?

4. 996 Turbo - more sensible investment than the C4S, perhaps even a future classic. Some would say more reliable but purchase price is a real killer and running costs and the potential for huge bills are ever present. Any shape would be fine.

5. 997 - early model. Ideally manual and convertible. Newer interior, newer car. Still potentially the same problems as the 996 engine wise with the years that I'm looking at. I like the shape just as much as the 996, but I can't decide if the 997 justifies spending a bit extra. Tempting to save cash and go for the vanilla carerra rather than the S. Is this foolish (same power as the 996 after all).

Sorry for my ramblings, feel free to point me in the direction of option 1!

To be honest I think spanned 12k on a Porsche is foolish when you consider some of the bills the car can and will throw at you.

You can't be far off becoming a consultant now maybe wait until you can find the extra cash for a more reliable 997.2 or maybe a cayman when you have a bit more to spend

I did mean the Super Sports ones rather then the Cup 2 tyres, which are my current favourite to change to come replacement time. However, as mine has the 20" wheels id need to go up to a 245 at the front to get them and still be N rated.

Mine runs on Mobile 1 (New Life) 0w40 and that comes in at around £100 ~ for 10L's

Like House recommends... you also mention finance as an option to top-up what you get for your S2000... you can get into the XXX.2 DFI caymans/boxsters without a huge finance package & have much less worry re: huge bills. Although, despite the horror stories, Porsche have a really rather good reliability history.

You may be lucky and find a minter of a high mileage model... but then my main criteria for looking for a 2009+ model was PDK, along with the engine choice.

But then I genuinely dislike the 996, so would not pick one at all... in that price bracket, I'd grab an E46 M3 or Z4M.

It's odd... I can't stand the feel of the 996, I find it underpowered and am not too fond of the driving characteristics... step up to the 997 and it's like night and day!

Yeah... PS2 = Pilot Sport 2, which are the newest "normal" Michelin's with N-rating for the correct sizes for my wheels.

Like you, I'd have to go up to 20" wheels for N-rating on the Super Sports and I don't want to... 19s are too big already IMO... I can tell the difference between big sidewall and little sidewall and I prefer performance over appearance. I'd happily go down to 15-17" wheels (lol).

Cup 2s I'd only really consider as the second set of wheels option, they're not viable as a primary daily drive really.

0w40 is recommended for "any temp" (ie, sub 25C even... :) )

Given the recent links I've found re: Porsche approval... I'll go with what they've put on the quote at 5w50... but I doubt I'll have any recourse should they "change their mind" on service day... hence wanting to check. If I'd realised the difference sooner, I'd have just called the service centre... but I've been bed-ridden with flu til today since last sunday and had planned to have a look at this sooner. We'll be driving back on sunday or monday, so missed my opportunity today to call the service centre to check.

0w40 and 5w50 are about the same price at 50 quid for 9L (4+4+1).
5w40 is about 40 quid.

Not interested in paying Porsche 3-4x that for the privilege of them ordering it for me at a discounted barrel rate... hehe... It's not a lack of ability to afford it... I just laughed when I saw their quote and knew I could do (much) better.

I was quoted around £350.00 for a oil change but that changes to 100 ~ if I supply them my own oil.

My car came with 0w40 from new, so i'll just be sticking with that for the moment.

I can't believe that its been a year since I first ordered my car and that its 6 months old in September.:eek::eek::eek:

Where has the time gone other than 3600 very happy miles :D:D:D:p

Yeah... that sounds about right for the UK, which is more expensive than Germany on labour rates by quite a bit and parts by a bit.

I picked up 4+4+1 litres of 5w50 mobil 1 today... I'm going with 5w50 as it's what Porsche put on their service quote and it's also included in their approved range for this engine and temperature range... 0w40, 5w40 and 5w50

So brakes checked out all fine today.... phew...I was just advised I was unlucky. :(

However, I have a wood screw in my rear tyre and Porsche have recommend a replacement tyre. So that's all booked in for next weekend and its costing me the pricey sum of £10.

However, I was discussing a GT3 with the sales man today and he said he has 12 people with LOI in for a 991.2 GT3 and 3 of them have put down a £10K deposit. I was told if I was to hand in a LOI plus 10K I would stand a very good chance of getting one, so ill think about that over the weekend. :o I also see Porsche Finance have finally come to their senses and dropped their APR to a sensible rate as I had some rough quotes for the car.

Few update pictures from a bit of clean. :D

Very nice :)

Come the end of the finance deal on the Boxster my credit history will be in a shape where I can make a similar move and go new/PCP if I want... yeyyyy

In the mean time i've started a savings account for an E46 M3 or Hayabusa... lol

Red. I'm quite happy with the choice.

I think I will call the dealer about the GT3 tomorrow. I have a 458 itch at the moment but I need to work out my divorce first.

That's a lovely choice, have you seen the PH thread on the colour choices?

I'm not a huge Ferrari fan personally but I like the F12 and the 458 Speciale. Its just the running costs of the things which are just eye watering! I've had 2 friends with Ferrari's and they have both had rather large bills them.

For me personally a GT3 is my ultimate car, oddly I don't have the same interest in the GT3 RS. I think its just too much, even though that's the whole point of the car.

Yes running costs on a Ferrari are a issue but I think the 458 is not too bad if you have a warranty but thats still some way off.

For me the ultimate car was would be a 991 PDK GTS or a Targa 4 GTS. I will get one at some point maybe after I sell the GT4 and the 991

Woah, sorry to hear that, hope everything works out for you. I think a 458 will be a good bit of retail therapy.

What's the plan with your GT4, are you going to keep it for a while or try and sell it on for minimal loss or potential profit?
