This will put and end to the silly market conditions I think. People on PH and other places with start talking up the importance of the manual gearbox for a 'true' GT3 and that will impact the current GT3. Mark my words, it is amazing how a few people on PH and other places can influence the market, but rest assured, they have.

Frankly if budget is tight then an 8 year old 911 is a risk. These things can throw up significant bills, 10K plus bills are not uncommon when seals or engine issues arise. If I were buying a 997 then I would seek a Generation 2 version with the DFI engine, which doesn't suffer the issues that effect some Generation 1 cars, but will come with a higher price of course.

At first I was looking to spend around 28k tops, but the higher price might not be a problem, if I don't lose a lot of money in depreciation when I come to sell it.
I'm not planning to put too many miles on it, one of the reasons I want to buy one is my father's dream was always to have a 911 Carrera, also mine ofc :), so I could get the car, enjoy a little, let my father play with it as well, as his heath is not very good so this could bring a little joy to him.
Also I could get an extended warranty, for peace of mind about engine or more expensive problems, I made a quick quote and on a 2008 911 it would cost me around £1k for 1 year cover, a 2009 gen2 would probably be around the same.
I wouldn't mind expending £5k more, if I get it back when it comes to sell the car in 1 or 2 years.

Then go buy a Gen 2 and enjoy it with your dad. They are superb cars, but they will lose money I feel but frankly all cars of this nature will at some point but at 34K you should find a nice solid car. Look at history and ownership rather than miles. These cars take miles well and the modern focus on miles is foolish.

I will have a look at that, also I will try to do some research around model/year/depreciation... I'm more inclined in a manual car, but PDK cars looks to be more desirable but also more expensive.
I'm not willing to lose a lot of money, because in 2 years time I'm planning to put this money as a deposit in a house.

Sounds good to me! I welcome a non inflated price for a car and not a artificially increased one.

As Housey said get a Gen 2 997. The manual car will cost you a lot less but it will also be much harder to sell on. Check for over revs before you buy it. Ideally by a car with a Porsche warranty even if it's only one month and then renew it for another 2 years.

Options I see as essential

Must be a S
PDK
If going for PDK then sports chrono.
pse
PCM
Bose
Ful leather

Nice to have
14 or 18 way seats.

Other options are a bonus.

- 34 for sale (across OPC network, Pistonheads and Autotrader)

- Prices range from £93,900 to £115,000 of which 14 under £100k, 17 over, 3 unknown at this point

- Mileage range from 4 miles to 2,300 of which only 3 have done more than 1,000 miles

So around £100k for a GT4, or, £126k for a McLaren 540C...hmmmmm

I'd be happy with a GT3, I'm not a fan of McLaren's they seem too clinical but I've not driven one. However, a 458 would be lovely but it's just running the thing! As the running costs are eye watering.

From the reading I have done I think the running costs are not too bad. The warranty is only around 2k pa and they have a 7 year service pack. I would think maybe 3k per year more than a 911.

So by that then its a extra £250 ~PM more to run a 458, that's not too bad. Personally, its when things go wrong it can get out of hand very quickly as Ive had a few friends who have had them and both needed to have the wiring looms replaced (360/355) at the cost of 5K and then the serving costs on top as a example.

However, that said I am also fully aware of the cost of one of the disks on my car should it need to be replace but I think Ferrari running costs are a step up from Porsche.

That's true, but the other problem with a Ferrari is the depreciation is hugely effected by the millage. As a example say you put on 4000 / 5000 miles in 6 months or so it could mean you loose 10/15K in depreciation.

This is true but I think 458 prices are very stable now and my idea was to buy a high mileage car (30k ish). So when I sell it on with 35k miles it should not make a huge difference. Ideally I want to do a Euro trip this year but its hard to get time off work especially considering I'm new so getting a long time off work in one black is not going to happen.

It's why so many (I would argue most) are clocked, sadly.
