Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

It's all a balance really. The main problem (or one theory) is that the automatic gearbox pulls away in second gear and causes bore scoring (high load, low rpm). If you're causing the engine to judder at low speed around town or when pulling away from a junction in theory it could cause a similar issue. However pottering around town isn't really all that stressful or taxing if you've warmed up the engine and are avoiding multiple short journeys.

Avoid short journeys where possible and warm up the engine before revving it past 3000 rpm. No guarantee that this will keep everything safe but it's good practice.
Thanks for the feedback, it's a manual I have. What gear do you drive in a 30 zone?

Revs are usually 2000-3000. 3rd or 4th gear. To be honest as long as you're not burying the throttle in top gear from waking pace there isn't much you can do!

I see lots of 911s here... any love for the Cayman? My 987 Cayman R PDK:

Got the car back from the bodyshop yesterday, garage appears to have done a good job and all official Porsche parts were used. Now as expected these parts weren’t cheap but looking through the invoices we noticed that the rear reflector strip was £617 (ex vat), yes that’s right what appears to be a bit of metal backed plastic was £617! I must be missing something like it's coated in platinum of have some form of advance tech hidden in it! :p

I'm currently in the process of suggesting my dad finally gets my mum the Porsche she's always wanted and spend their money rather than worrying about leaving an inheritance.

She's not going to be driving particularly fast so isn't going to benefit from 95% of the point of the car, but she's always preferred the 911 to the Boxster/Cayman. I know certain models seem to be exempt from depreciation but what are the ones to go for as that might help sway him!

He's likely to be taking it to Spain so left hand drive would be handy, is it worth trying to find one in Germany or is the weak pound likely to offset any potential benefits?

I'm wondering whether something like this would be good. I'd love it but whether she wants something comfier/more modern

Are you definitely after an air cooled one? They seem pretty depreciation proof but come with the disadvantages of being older (obviously!). I'm not sure what prices are like on the continent but over here LHD examples are definitely cheaper to buy than equivalent RHD cars so it would be worth keeping your eyes open for one.

So much character in the SC 911's. I'd love to have one one day! I saw an amazing yellow LHD targa on the M40 on Saturday of about the same age as the one you posted. Beautiful!

No idea to be honest, just i know my mums always wanted one and they're currently in the process of selling their house and downsizing as they live in Spain these 10 months of the year so they'll end up with about 300k in cash sat around after they buy something else. Given he's 70 and she's 65, there's no point sticking it away for my benefit when they could go out and enjoy it.

Given they've never been too bothered about cars previously (he has a Renault Captur (spits) and she's got a mk1 Audi TT), i don't think they're overly particular but it's just one of those things she's always desired. I'd have thought buying an LHD one here and then driving over to Spain would be a great way to spend a bit of time and probably add quite a bit of value given used prices on the continent.
