What about warranty? is it like BMW that you can buy it for a used car and nothing more than an annual sub? If so, how much for a Cayman for the year?

The warranty is transferable as long as you buy direct from porsche or privately. It's very much like bmw. I think it's about 1600 for 2 years although you can buy it for 1. I don't believe it changes with mileage though where bmws have that stupid 60k bump. I'm paying less annually for this than I was for my 6 series.
If the car doesn't have warranty then you can get one applied. You have to have the car inspected by porsche which is £217 and it may require that they carry out a major service which is about £600 if they haven't serviced it.
Servicing is based on 2 year intervals. Major, interim. From porsche it averages about £300 per year by the time you add in plug, belt and fluid changes.

Servicing isn't too bad, in the last 2 service with my Volvo I've paid £400 the first time and £300 last week, and that's only a C30 from a specialist!

Those kind of numbers it seems I can swallow and run without much change in terms of life style, i just got to come up with £25k :p

Honestly I was surprised how 'cheap' it was. Like I say, it's costing me less than my bmw. If you're used to running premium cars it's really not too painful. Although you still have to pay a premium for approved tyres and the likes they're typically £10-20 more expensive per corner than a non marked version.

How much is a set of tyres? £200 a corner?

I always thought the 996 tyres were cheap. I think the 295/30/18s were maybe 250 each Max. I don't think they were that much to service either I think It was maybe 400 for a minor and 600 for a major from an opc. My wife's focus st costs roughly half that so it's not too bad. It's the labour for repairs that I found the most costly rather than the parts.

Hopefully this answers a few questions, as these have been my costs over the 4 years I have had this car.

Warranty

The Porsche Approved Warranty covers all components of your Porsche and offers the same level of service as our new car warranty. In principle, the Porsche Approved Warranty covers a period of at least 12 months and can, of course, be extended provided your Porsche is no more than 14 years old and has covered less than 200,000 km/125,000 miles. So we insure your Porsche for up to 15 years and, if your vehicle is less than 13 years old, you can choose a 24-month warranty period. Even if you didn’t buy your car with a Porsche Approved Warranty, or if the warranty has already expired, this can still be arranged through your Porsche Centre. Your Porsche Centre will be happy to provide you with further information.

I’ve spent on my Volvo so far in 3 years

I bought a set of rubber floor mats £60
Rear parcel shelf £320
Goodyear AS2 £435
Rear wiper arm £50
Wheel centre caps x4 £30
Service + MOT + timing belt £800
Service + MOT + bushes arms £600
I also changed the brake discs and pads for £400

Total £2695 over 3 years/35k miles

Bearing in mind the car came with 4 brand new tyres so i didn't replace them for the first 20k miles.

That's not too far off what you quoted there if the timing belts and bushes are covered under warranty.

One big difference if the car is running PCCB's, the costs are increased quiet a bit. However, on the plus they should last for the life time of the car and they recommend changing the pads at 50% wear.

PCCBs Costs:

£300~ Pads
£3800 ~ Front Disks (Per Disk)
£2800 ~ Rear Disks (Per Disk)

If the discs lasts a life time then it shouldn't be a problem. Also if I am to have 2 cars then the servicing will definitely be over 2 years as I don't do 20k a year, especially with 2 cars.

Don't know about the 981S but my 987S has cost me <£2900 since 2016 in repairs and servicing, and that's servicing every year rather than the standard 2 year interval. I've got a full breakdown of costs in a spreadsheet if interested.

@Raymond Lin I can fit loads of stuff in my 35iS boot ;).

Haha, I actually looked at that and the SLK350 last night, the SLK350 compared to the Porsche, on paper, is an absolute bargain. £18k get you get one with 40k miles, auto, the air scarf thing, leather etc. Of course it is also a 6cylinder engine as well and 3.5Litres.

Honestly don't even bother looking at SLKs, they're pap. The E89 is already an old car but the R172 somehow feels even older. Boring interior, disappointing build quality and not enough drama.

987.2 Boxster S was a top contender against my 35iS, but finding a good one takes forever and an extra few grand which I couldn't justify. A 981 S may follow the E89 though.

Whereabouts are you? If you're anywhere South West you can have a poke around mine ;).

I want this one to be a keeper, one to be garaged and come out now and again and I will be one of those old people who have an old classic Porsche...embracing the cliche!

I am in Hereford, Somerset is probably 90min to 2 hours away depending?

I have my heart set on a 981 at the moment, I think that shape will age the best, but truth be told the most significant difference is the 981's centre console. I like the separation between the driver and passenger. more in that than the 987.

Good idea, if you can afford it go for it :). 981 was definitely top of my list but I couldn't quite stretch to it, but I bet overall the cost of ownership will be the same as I suspect they will hold their value. Finding one with the right spec and good colour was a real challenge though, I don't know Porsche buyers seem to love the most boring combinations possible.

A part of me thinks getting a barebone one in manual might not even be a bad idea as for a driving experience, the purist side, it might be better. over the PDK, i mean I would keep a 2nd car anyway. It would also get me into one cheaper too. One thing I do want is heated seats!

Side note - can someone explain what buttons I should be look out for in the 981? like looking at a photo, I now realise the heated seats buttons are the bottom 2 on the central console so if I see it blanked out, I can tell it doesn't have it without looking at the spec.

I have also noticed not many of them have buttons on the steering wheel, is that common?
