Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

Information please. On the 911 Carrera 2

*how much do these usually go for (talking three or more years old)?
*what are they like to live with?
*running costs
*what are they like to drive?

I currently own an m135i. I've only had it for a about a month now. And although I absolutely love driving it. I can't help but feel as though something is missing from the overall experience. I can't put my finger on it just yet.

It will be more time you are missing. You have owned the car a month?!

Do you think you have experienced everything it has to offer in that time?

I just sold my 2011 C2S PDK with a massive spec and 34k miles for £44k However you can get a nice one for under £40k

If you buy a older one you could have some rather big bills if you dont have a warranty.

*what are they like to live with?
Nothing sort of amazing, I can't put my finger on it but its just best every day car you can find in its class.

*running costs
If you have a warranty not much, £1.1k per year for the warranty, £300 per year to service it (average cost as its supposed to be every 2 years). I average 23MPG but can get 34 mpg on a run at 90 to 100 mph.
Insurance only cost me £100 more then my 1.4 golf.

*what are they like to drive?
I own a 335i and a bunch of other cars. The 911 wins hand down.

Already?!

Yes I should have Kept this one, I bought a Panamera for my wife and then found my self itching to buy a 991. Now I can not make my self pay the best part of 65 to £70k for a 2 to 3 year old 911 so I am going to hold out until the prices drop a little. I may side step into a V10 R8 for the summer until the 991 is a little more affordable.

Perfect daily driver and bullit proof reliability on gen2
You will average 20mpg if you drive it hard, above 25mpg otherwise
Probably the best drivers car under 100k that works superbly well on both track and road, not one or the other.

Depends what you want, what is it you feel your missing in the BMW, driving feel, excitement, challenging? Or something else?

If you want a true drivers 911 a lot recommend a basic 997.2 C2 with 18" wheels, no PASM, essentially base spec, comfy and great fun.

I prefer the S versions, 3.8l has superb torque and power, 0-100mph in around 9s, PASM so soft on road which works well and firm on track.

If you want a true drivers car with unbeatable steering, communication and feedback with incredible ability when your brave enough to push it then Porsche is one of the best options and I love the challenge of the 911, nearly four years later I love the drive. I've never kept any car this long, I say I am gonna sell it then I drive it and simply can't. :)

I'm not the world's biggest Porsche fan but the place I use for wheel alignment is a Porsche specialist and it's 911 overload in there. Some awesome rebuilds they usually have going on :)

Most people who actually drive the things and know how to peddle say the same, a special car that always challenges. Most people who have a chip on their shoulder, who drove one never or know a bloke who had one and hated it or because they all look the same or because they are boring because another bloke who never drove one or Clarkson and the sneer brigade said so, don't. I understand how people might find them boring to look at, each to their own, but anyone who likes to drive and says they are boring to drive has never driven one, never driven one far or has no limbs and a baseball cap.....and sneers and sniggers at Clarksons stereotypes.

I can't put my finger on it. Perhaps it has something to do with it being an auto. However, I feel as though I'd feel no different if it were a manual.

Will see how I get on but I can see myself taking either a 911 or Cayman out for a test in a few months time.

I think a manufacturer from Norfolk may have something to say about that.

On the road? I'd disagree, if your talking Lotus I've checked the new Exige out and Evora. Beautiful to look at but both were disappointing inside and on track even in just a cooking Carrera I never had any issues passing Exiges including the new model. Ring laptimes also seem to confirm that the 911 is faster, 7:50 vs over 8 minutes for the latest Exige and on the road the Exige is vastly worse than the 911, the Evora is nearly as good on the road but looses some on track again. The 911 really is the complete package and is why they have sold in millions and are one of the most profitable companies. They make cars which drive on track like focused track cars but are great and comfortable places to be on the road.

In defence the Exige on track would be more thrilling and challenging for sure, afterall its got no carpets, but the 911 is not exactly boring and on the road the 911 is the most fun road car I have ever driven by quite some distance, they literally truly do excel and you can use the power all year round. :)

Still not told us what you think it is missing? if it is driver involvement then auto/manual makes a big difference. BMW's are now using auto's which are absolutely superb as an auto but they have lost the hardcore side that came with SMG. Porsche with their very latest PDK+ is superb, but on the age of Porsche you'd be buying I'd say keep away from PDK, it like the BMW is boring.

Manual all the way on any 997/987 car, it was only the 981/991 era where PDK Sports Plus really is great as a drivers car. :)

I've not told you because I don't know what missing lol. It's just a feeling I have at the moment. Perhaps the car doesn't feel special enough... Perhaps it's down to it being an auto.

I once thought that a fast car would do it for me lol. Now I'm not so sure.

I've not driven many Porsches. The only time I've ever felt my life was genuinely in danger when driving a car was in a 993 Carerra. It was awesome.

Why I love mine, because at times even in a 997 it gives me that feeling if I am a bit of a twit in it. :)
Now the weather is warm I can't wait for the drive home, as my 911 is running on Corsa's at the moment, in hot dry weather they are bloody amazing, I rate them even over the cups. But in the wet the car feels dangerous when it lets go were talking BIG SLIDES even with the TC on, though my car defaults to Sport mode everytime hence the slip angles. I've never driven it in none sport mode, no need!

But the Supersports are without doubt best all round tyre, on those I have huge confidence in the wet as well, the Corsa's in the wet just don't grip at all, so fun for sliding around at low speeds but at higher speeds it is very scary and twitchy, amazing difference a tyre makes, especially in the wet. I actually found the cups with their less tread depth better in the wet than the Corsa's.

AUTO / PDK always feel great on test drives, as you just love the ability to nail them off the line perfect each time without shocking the transmission. But after a week its boring, too easy and then when you do go for a drive down your favourite b-roads the auto just dulls the entire experience.

I'd only take PDK Sports plus found in the 991/981 over a manual now or the old school SMG-2 found in the E46 M3's, otherwise a manual every time for a car which is also a fun/weekend car.

AUTO's have their place, motorways and daily commuters.
