Sky News is reporting that Glenn Roeder is gonna be announced as the new Newcastle boss at some point today!

He's done well as caretaker but I never thought he should be the full time boss as he hasnt got the clout to bring the big players to St James. Looks like Freddies to tight to get O'Neill or any other of the big boys.

What badges does he need that he hasnt got? He was a manager before at Westham, I am sure that qualifies him.

Not saying he is the right choice though. Newcastle need a big name like O'Neil.

There was some issues arounding him when he was WH manager as well IIRC, didnt they have to get special permission from the FA for him to carry on?

I would be amazed if he hadnt bothered to do them by now.

Slacker tbh...

Surely looking after Newcastles academy and being a body double for Rizzo the Rat didnt take all of his time up ? :p

I disagree with the OP.

I think Glenn Roeder deserves a chance. He obviously has the geordie boys believing in themselves. If they had performed throughout the season like they had since he has been in control, they would be fighting for Champions league.

Good luck Geordies Good luck Glenn

Bad move if true.
He has done nothing wrong thus far and its very hard to build a case against him getting the job.
I dont think he has the pull for getting in the big players , no european experience (not that he might need it) , questionable health problems and wont be up to competing with the likes of Wenger , Mourinho et all.
At the very , very best we would be challenging the top six and realisticly we need to get back into that top four.

He's done enough to warrant selection as a candidate but when it comes to the crunch I dont think he would be up to it.
He has been under very little pressure since taking over , I think that would be much different when the season is in full swing and the fans demand results.
There is also a big squad building process to be undertaken to undo all the mess Souness left behind , the club is almost skint and if we dont sell Owen some shrewd transfer dealings are needed - Has Roeder got the network available to him to get players who are a) good and b) cheap the way Wenger manages to find them?

Hes a good bloke but this appointment is crucial to the future of the club and I dont think this is the right one , mind you , he is miles more preferable than O'Leary/Bruce/Allardyce or Curbishley and if he does get the gig then he is only a stop gap for Shearer.

It looks like its a go'er.

The next full-time manager of Newcastle United will be Glenn Roeder - if the club can reach agreement with the FA over a timetable for his permanent appointment.

That was the news being reported on Tyneside today, although it seems as if the story may have appeared prematurely.

From what we can gather, the scenario is this:

Roeder's allotted 12 week tenure as stand-in boss has now expired, but the club successfully appealed to the FA for an extension until the end of the season - citing the ongoing uncertainty over the FA's appointment of a new England boss as a mitigating factor.

The decision has now been made by the club to appoint Roeder on a permanent basis, but further clearance is required for this to be ratified as a valid appointment by the FA.

Our rationale appears to be that the part -qualified Roeder will complete the outstanding parts of the Prolicence course before next season, meaning he'll take charge for our opening game of 2006/07 with all required qualifications.

We've now reputedly asked for this to be rubber-stamped by the FA.

Saturday saw Roeder oversee his tenth victory in fifteen games since taking over from Graeme Souness in February.

The club posted the following quotes from Freddy Shepherd on the official site:

"I am aware of reports circulating today but the club will not be making any comment on them.

"We haven't ruled anyone in, or out, as far as things go.

"When we have something to say on the matter we will make an official announcement."

Im a bit dissapointed tbh but it could be far worse.

I only occasionally look at the English league tables and I was stunned to see Newcastle in 7th and with a (small) chance of Europe. Roeder doesn't tick all the boxes for the job but you can't argue with his results.

Its a four tier league.
Tier one is the obvious big boys.
Tier three is the 3 relegation candidates
Tier four is sunderland
Tier two is everybody else.

The tier two clubs can all beat each other and are mediocre in the extreme.
All this talk of Bolton , Wigan , West Ham and Blackburn doing this that and the other and if one club string a handfull of decent results together you can be right up there.
Newcastle have won 10 games since he took over , only one of them was a team above us in the league - a way below par Spurs.

The appointment hasnt been confirmed yet , but if it has what happened to Foresight? Planning? Long term aim for the club?

Fat Freddy making the same mistakes that he has made in all his previous appointments.

Would Roeder have gotten the job if he hadnt won a few games in the last few weeks? I seriously doubt it.

When Liverpool want a new manager they go to Valencia to get the spanish league & uefa cup winner.

Chelsea get the Champions league winner.

Man Utd got the only man to break the old firm hold in scotland and cup winners cup winner.

Arsenal get the man with the best reputation for bringing youth team players through.

Newcastle get the bloke from the youth team whos a nice fella but failed in every other managers job hes had, mitigating circumstances perhaps but he didnt even do a decent job he did a poor one.

NUFC pay huge wages to players and managers, play in front of 52,000 every week, if thats not a big job for a top manager then theres only one reason, they dont want to work for the fat ***** in charge.

So what's Freddies agenda? He's obviously not interested in making the champions league but is he making any money from the club at the moment?

Newcastle fans are similar to Celtic's in that they will fill the stadium and spend a fortune on merchandise no what's happening on the pitch.

I'd be quite happy if Roeder got the job. I don't really want Martin O'Neil, he did quite well with Leicester but then the only other success he has had is with Celtic and I don't think it's that hard to succeed with Celtic, even Gordon Strachan can do it. :p

The fact is all the best managers in the world are taken and the "top" names other people are talking about aren't even that good IMO Mancini for example, he's hardly done that well with Inter or what about Sam Alladyce, Paul Jewell and Alan Curbishley, well, all of those clubs are behind us in the table and it would be a pretty illogical step to bring one of those in.

I think we will be better of letting Roeder develop at Newcastle like Ferguson at Man U (who was unsuccessful early on) or like Del Bosque at Real (the most successful coach they've had in while?) who came from the youth team like Roeder.

He uses the club as a cash cow.
The half year results are in and turnover , cash , revenue, profit and net assets are all down.
The only thing thats up is spend = transfers and wages.
Not a good thing.
Half year losses are £6.3m with a projested total year loss of £20m.

He makes his money from dividends on the clubs shares (of which he owns just over 28%) as well as paying himself a salary of £600k pa.
Last years dividend was over £1m.
The success of the club (financially) goes hand in hand with a high turnover and therefore high dividends.
The largest dividends taken (over £2m per year) were taken during the 01/02 season when we made the second stage of the champions league.

Theres a great site here http://www.nufc-finances.org.uk/ made by a Newcastle supporting accountant where I got this info from.
Have a look at this chart on the very bottom of this page http://www.nufc-finances.org.uk/dividends.htm that compares NUFC's performance and payouts to global firms like Lloyds , Boots and BT.

It would be foolish to suggest he doesnt want Champions league qualification as this would mean large payments to himself , a degree of success on the pitch and it would please the fans.

Im still scratching my head here but I cant see anything past an appointment of Alan Shearer as manager in the next year or two.
And that would be a disaster.
What top manager would work for us when he knows , because of Freddys well documented wish of Shearer to one day take charge , he could lose his job whenever Shearer fancies stepping in?

Or mabye they are aware that is an impossible job, it is nigh on impossible to be a succesful manager at NUFC, your fans just expect miracles, you seem to think you have a god given right to be up there with Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, etc, etc. Spurs are a superior team and squad than newcastle and they have shown the way to do it, they have taken their time and have been underperforming slightly over the last 3-4 years but they have been in that time slowly building up one of the best young squads in Europe, and it's broken them into the top 4 only now, but they will only get better as long as they keep thier players.

newcastle on the other hand seem to expect to be up there now, which is ridiculous, just because you have a big ground and a lot of fans doesn't mean you have a team that is anywhere near as good as those at the top of the Prem, you are about 5 world class players short of all of them. Mabye if your fans lowered their ridiculous expectations a top manager may consider taking the job, accept that it's going to take a few years of stability and building to get you anywhere, than mabye but as it stands if a manager isn't winning things quickly you start to get disgruntled and want them out. Man U are where tey are today because they allowed Fergie time to build, Arsenal are where they are today because Wenger has built a team and are being patient while he does it again with arguably the best young squad in Europe, Spurs are where tey are because they have allowed managers to build a side which has been completed by Jol and consequently they have one of the top young squads in Europe.

What is it with fans in the northwest and stupidly high expectations, the Sunderland fans had incredibly stupid expectations they were never going to do well with the cack team that they had, even Borough fans to a lesser extent have strangely high and unjustified expectations of their team, but they are at least allowing Mclaren to build a solid side.

Other than your geography there are some fair points in there.
Robson was given time to build and he did just that , a good mix of youth , experience and some continental flair.
His sacking came at the worst possible time and wasnt orchestrated by the fans.
Robson had a good side and we enjoyed some high finishing positions , it was becoming obvious that his time was nearing an end and it was great platform to build on.
Souness destroyed that.

What Im saying is that we were up there and spectaculary imploded , we have the highest average ticket prices outside of London and a Chairman who milks us for our cash - are you saying we dont deserve a return on our money?

It has nothing to do with wanting rid of the manager for not winning things - we havent won a domestic trophy since the 50's.

Souness was the wrong appointment at the wrong time , he spent £50m , got rid of our best player and ended up with us 10 league places worse off.
Thats hardly stability and building.
The fans didnt want Keegan , Gullet or Dagliesh out , they werent sacked either.

He had West Ham temporarily in the Premiership, his badges would not cover him to continue managing in the Premiership, but did for the first division IIRC.

Personally, I don't think Roeder is the right man for the job.

Sorry about that, god knows why i put north west, sadly i don't :)

I agree about souness any manager actually sacked by liverpool has to be a rubbish manager, as they generally don't sack people unless they have just been done by a division 1 side at anfield in a horific purple and lime green kit, with a stunning goal from mr Tinnion :D

I never got the souness appointment, i can understand why they may have wanted a manager of his ilk, as all to often for me (not being a NUFC fan) it seemed as if large numbers of your players just coulnd't be bothered a lot of the time, bu to appoint one as tactically innept as souness was stupid, someone like big sam would have worked wonders with NUFC after Robson, a man who is tactically clever but also has little time for wasters, which you do seem to accrue at a somewhat alarming rate.

I agree that you do deserve something for the amount of money you have to shell out, but that isn't challenging the top 4 at the moment, for me you need to take 1 step backwards to take 2 forward, get rid of a large number of your overpaid prima donnas, and replace them with good young grafters with some ability, suplement that with some real quality (not emre) and build a side that is only ever going to get better like spurs and Arsenal are doing.

I understand that this may well be a problem with freddie in chage, but i don't think you can expect a top class manager to come in yet as a your team is simply not god enough for a top class manager, you have some good individuals but they just don't work hugely well as a unit, you need someone who will bring the team forward to a position where a top manager may think about joining, from what he is doing at the moment i don't think roeder would be a bad appointment in the short to mid term, oh and you need a striker as well, as Ameobi is ok but he is nowhere near good enough IMO to lead the line of a club with top 8 ambitions.

Your chairman does not help, as he does seem to be up there with deadly doug for woefully innept chairman. I don't think you will get it but i think from the Outside NUFC need a complete rebuild from top to bottom starting with that man.
