It would certainly hurt sales though if they were honest about only 3.5GB of the vram that's ACTUALLY usable by games...The daft thing is, if they had of been upfront about the 970, it still would have sold like crazy and it wouldn't of damaged NVidia reputation like it has. It was an utterly stupid move by NVidia.
The 970 is still advertised and sold as 4GB vram to today...people that haven't been following tech news wouldn't know better. The difference of having 3.5GB and 4GB vram in current games may not matter too much, but it is certainly an issue that come back and bite the users sooner or later. I know some people argue that the difference of 512MB of vram isn't much, but it could potentially what draw the line between stuttering and not stuttering in some games in the future...
Anyway, I hope Nvidia will learn their lesson and be more honest and forthcoming about their cards, so consumers can make a more informed buying decision.
On AMD's end, I hope they would pull themself together and get back in shape, so that it wouldn't give Nvidia the opportunity of pulling something like that again.
