The daft thing is, if they had of been upfront about the 970, it still would have sold like crazy and it wouldn't of damaged NVidia reputation like it has. It was an utterly stupid move by NVidia.
It would certainly hurt sales though if they were honest about only 3.5GB of the vram that's ACTUALLY usable by games...

The 970 is still advertised and sold as 4GB vram to today...people that haven't been following tech news wouldn't know better. The difference of having 3.5GB and 4GB vram in current games may not matter too much, but it is certainly an issue that come back and bite the users sooner or later. I know some people argue that the difference of 512MB of vram isn't much, but it could potentially what draw the line between stuttering and not stuttering in some games in the future...

Anyway, I hope Nvidia will learn their lesson and be more honest and forthcoming about their cards, so consumers can make a more informed buying decision.

On AMD's end, I hope they would pull themself together and get back in shape, so that it wouldn't give Nvidia the opportunity of pulling something like that again.

It didn't affect nvidia at all, not in a negative way.
They still sell sold gm204 inventory as/at mass profit, those that were unhappy with the 970 then returned them and paid even more money for a 980.
Genius marketing of their whole series of over priced cards by nvidia this round.
People will pay the moneys.

The 980 is an oddball card if you ask me, got a lot of hype but really was just a 1 gig upgrade over the 780ti using less power. Yes well and good that it uses less power but in performance terms it really did nothing new.

Already argued that case nearly a year ago,
Even when you had proof that gm204 shared a family with the mobile laptop gm204, die hard nvidia fans would not accept the 980 as mid range, defending it as a flagship gpu still

Taking a step back...I think it would be silly if there's any Nvidia loyalists actually wishing the AMD not to do well on the 390x, cause even if they are never going to buy a AMD card in a million years, if the 390x do well and is priced aggressively, it would only mean it would forces Nvidia to not rip them off (too much) with the 980Ti 6GB. Just think back about price drop of the GTX780 when the 290/290x were launched!

So regardless of if belonging in the "green camp" or "red camp", EVERYONE should be wishing the 390x to be a great card at a great price :p

+1 Couldn't have said it better myself.

For all those doubting the how the 390X (and 980ti) will compete vs the TX, which includes me, I've done some digging around. Let's go back a couple of years to the equivalent situation with the original Titan. Titan original launched early 2013 and towards the end of 2013, the 780ti and 290X had been released. The 780ti was neck and neck with the Titan, while the 290X actually could do better than the Titan. I was surprised.

If the past is anything to go by, then the 980ti should be on par with the TX and 390X could beat it. But, my cynicism holds strong. I still don't believe it. Only gaming benchmarks will convince me.

I also don't get the hate on the 970/980 in this thread. The 970 is a great card for the money, even without 0.5GB. Otherwise, that less than 4GB would be visible in benchmarks and it would perform worse than a 290X with 4GB, which it doesn't for the most part. 980 is also decent (not as great as 970 IMO, due to price:performance) and before the TX, it was the best card money could buy. People even upgraded their Titans to 980s.

I say this as a neutral person, I'm neither a fan of AMD or Nvidia. So far I've had 50:50 AMD and Nvidia dedicated cards. I just want good performance for an appropriate price. If you like being ripped off, then you are either very wealthy or have terrible spending habits.

I dont think anyone doubting it will compete with the titan X would complain if it even equalled it. Its simply a measure to avoid ridiculous rumours and or hopes. If you expect it to compete on the level it be aimed against anything more is a billy bonus and not a cruel let down.

Basically to reign in ideas of a £450 Titan X beating, unicorn edition card.

I think many users expect this card to be a titan killer and such seen as its been a while since we've seen a card from AMD but the 390x isn't aimed up there and the ultra enthusiasts it's aimed at the high end mainstream which is where it will also be priced.

So if the performance is close to the titan x or within 5% or even 10% at a lower price, then that's quite good and where it should be. If the 390x meets or performs 5% or faster then that's just incredible as its not going to be priced anywhere near as stupidly priced as a titan X.

But quite a few think then nvidia will just respond with a titan x TI ohh wait sorry a 980TI with a lower price but 6GB vram at a lower price.

Even if nVidia did this it just screams stupid. Whats the point of the Titan X? Just the extra 6GB of vram? Why not just make the Titan X a 980TI but a 12GB model at a higher price?

Reason nVidia can do this is because they have too many people throwing their money at them while nVidia laugh their way to the bank to do what ever they want. Because they have sheep like Apple do buying their new toys as they bring them out regardless of price.

But then it's kinda a double edge sword as you have AMD sitting on their ass not doing anything, allowing nVidia to just do what they want and sit back and charge what they want... Fed up of the GPU progression now.

Well there is little Point speculating the price apart from the fact that it's 99.9% going to be cheaper than the Titan X.

Like What the guy above said with history when the 290X came out it made the 780 drop a whole tier. So you NVIDIA lovers should be hoping the 490X or whatever is as fast as possible, because it could be a win for your pockets too when the 980 Ti comes around and needs to be priced more appropriately. So stop dooming and just hope both companies push performance harder cause it's better for the lot of us.

Similar performance to TX but cheaper or better performance and pricey. Either way will be a good result from AMD.

Actually releasing the card is important as well.. I wander how small AMD's market share will be by the time 3XX series launch. These new cards have a lot of work to do lol.

It's stupid for the people getting rear ended by the costs. It's great for NVIDIAS back pocket. Sell 680/980 for £400-£600 sell Titan/Titan X for £860-£950 then just half the vram on the 780Ti/980Ti for £550-£650 and it looks a bargain lol.

There are a number of people on this board for whom it's almost seen as a badge of honour how much they have paid nVidia for their card. Like they are supporting Their favoured corporate entity by throwing as much money as they can at it. It's people like these who allow nVidia to price as they do because they'll actually stump up the cash for a 900 quid card and be proud of it too. Like they just ate a plate of live maggots in some bizarre initiation ceremony for what they think is an exclusive club.

I think they left it too late as most people jumped on nvidia maxwell, they might struggle to sell if they offer little compelling reason.
For people like me still on 7950/680/770 then if the price is right we'll probably make the jump. But people on gtx970/980 r9 290x it might not be worthwhile.

Agreed, they left it to late, and suffered market share loss as a result.

However the same guys willing to pay big bucks for GTX 980's and Titan X's will be the same guys who would switch to AMD if the performance is there.

The difference is this time AMD / ATI historically have never had such little market share, so when 3XX series launch they need to be good solid products and sell well just to re coup what marketshare they have lost, that's before gaining any ground against Nvidia.

The cards have to be good and they have to sell to keep AMD relevant. Not releasing anything against Maxwell when the GTX 980 launched back in September last year has proven that you need new products to stay relevant. At least we know there is a new GPU architecture from AMD this year (At least with the very high end) followed by improved architecture next year which is more traditional.

3XX series have a lot to do..

I'll be sticking with my 290x really pleased with so far and see no reason to upgrade, next upgrade will be a monitor and then I'll look at the Zen cpus when they come out followed by another gpu. People need to start learning to stick with what they have for a while, upgrading for the sake of it is stagnating everything and causes high prices. I wanted a 390x myself and still do but I'm going to resist the cost to change does not justify the gain for changing every generation

+1 100%..

i normally go crossfire then miss out the next gen, because having 2 previous gen cards would give around the same or faster then 1 of next gen cards

The people who can't afford Titan Xs seem quite bitter about it.

It's not I can't afford a titan x, its more to do with what it actually is constructed from.
In my eyes its the real 980 with a titan name badge, nothing can justify it's price tag.
I spend more on turbo's/manifolds and engine builds for my cosworth yb,
I just won't buy something that's got a huge mark up.
