On average how big are games/applications/windows vista64 OS files? Only reason I ask is because im trying different strip sizes and im trying to find out which one is the quickest and best suited for my needs. . .

Im currenly experimenting with a 16k strip.

Seagate 1TB Drive.

4xWD250gb (IDE) Been running for 3.5 years in Music server.

One drive failed and had to be replaced with:

1 Seagate 1TB Drive to replace them all

Currently running on an old Asus A7N8X-E (SATA1) Windows XP (AMD XP 2400)

Also I have a Asrock 939Dual
With a 300gb Maxtor

Something wrong with that 1 I'd say, minimum looks too slow.

There's nothing wrong with what's normally the minimum speed - the speed at the 100% mark. There is, however, something using the disk on a regular basis which is causing some I/O contention and hence the regular dips in the graph.

2x36GB Raptors WD SATA I 16MB Cache W.D. Raptors in RAID 0

2x500GB AAKS WD SATA II 16MB Cache drives in RAID 1 (<-with an external backup solution - I don't even know why have bought two of these and mirrored them. I might destroy the array and sell one)..

edit - could anybody confirm if this is roughly what I should be getting? I am using an Asus AM2 sct M2N-E motherboard, and using an onboard RAID controller.

That's very slow mate, have you got the write back cache enabled?

God I can't remember for the life of me. Which array are you talking about fella?

Stripe=32k (os + stuff)
mirror=128k (storage drive)

Yes I was going to say thats Raptor raid is slow, obv aint a PCI bus with 200 burst though.

Hmm...I think for a little bit both drives were being accessed - shall I run them again with everything turned off?

Edit - I ran both tests again and came up with almost identical results.
