Post your hard drive benchmarks!

What problems where you having with your Velociraptor? because, im planning on buying one of those - the WD3000HLFS version, for use as my os boot drive.

The one I had would make a noise like it was thrashing the drive for several seconds, occasionally. It would do this even at the BIOS screen so it wasn't a Windows issue. I've never known a hard drive to do that before. The Caviar Black drive I have now doesn't do that. The retailer (not OcUK) said the drive was not faulty, but they still gave a refund, luckily.

Based on my experience in this system, the Velociraptor was subjectively NO faster than the Caviar Black I have now, in any respect, whether it be booting Windows or loading applications or games.

Ok, I hope I don't have the same problem.

Thank you for responding;)

Thinking of upgrading my curent setup. Curently got a 74GB Raptor for Vista and a 500GB Samsung for data etc.

Need to increase the storage space and was thinking of replacing both drives for a pair of WD 640GB Black in RAID-0.

Anyone give me some advice on whether i'd see any negative effect as the access time of 8.1 is lower than results i've seen in this thread for the WD Black.

Or would the increase in bandwidth make up for that? Hmm?

I don't know about RAID as I have no experience of using it, but I do know the Velociraptor I had didn't seem any quicker (except in synthetic benchmarks) than my Caviar Black. Windows didn't boot any quicker, games didn't load any quicker, Windows overall didn't feel any more responsive etc.

Initially I was very impressed with the Velociraptor, because it was a new system and I was coming from an old PATA drive. But when I put the OS on the Caviar Black, it felt just as quick. I believe it is about 50% faster for sustained reading/writing than the old style Raptor that you have. The only downside is the higher access time but in real world performance this seems to have an absolutely negligible effect.

Cheers for the response,

Yeah i think i've been clingging on to the 10,000 rpm 8.1ms seek for too long now!

And if the velociraptor doesn't show and performance advantages over the Black in vista for you then i'm sure moving from my older raptor would be a good move.

My main objective is to expand the 500GB storage and improve performance of where the data is stored. So speeding up the OS would be a bonus i guess :)

Just replaced 2 x 250gb Samsungs;

With 2 x 640gb Caviar Black;

Pretty pleased with that upgrade, lots more storage and faster in all areas. :)

Hi mate. Could you tell me what stripe size you're using there? I'm on a 32k stripe with 2 x 640gb Caviar Black and don't get anywhere near the same performance :(

Old Setup - 2 x 250Gb Seagate Drives - RAID0 128k Stripe

New Setup - 2 x 640Gb F1 Drives - RAID0 32k Stripe

Not entirely sure why my CPU usage is so much higher than everyone elses! Is that normal? I'm running an E8400 at 3.6GHz :confused: Still, I've got a decent speed increase which I'm pleased with :)

Comparison of my seagate 7200.9 500Gb (previous fastest) and my new WD caviar green 1Tb:

The green is a 5400 spindle but I heard its quiet and reliable (well more so that I heard Samsung F1 1Tb was unreliable). The caviar green still beats all my other older 7200rpm HD.

New bench...

This is with my i7-920 overclocked to 3.8Ghz and the latest Perc 6/i firmware which gives a performance boost on RAID 0.

3 x Seagate Cheetah 15k.5 300Gb drives in RAID 0 - 32k stripe.

I did have write caching and advanced performance enabled, but it didn't seem to make any difference so this is with them disabled again.
