Post Your Home Cine & HiFi Kit...

When i read this and saw the picture I was like

I know its probably not deflecting too much but as it will most likely be tempered glass and when it breaks it will shatter into a thousand peices instantly, causing all your gear on that shelf to fall to the floor vertically which will give a nasty knock!

Put a support or length of timber somwhere out of view... go on you know you need to :p

Thanks, you're right - it's worth doing. It's less apparent from a more normal (higher) viewing angle, and I was a bit surprised how pronounced it looks in the photo. I think I have the booklet that came with the stand somewhere - I'll see if it says what load it should be able to take.

My onix OA20 and Rega Planar 2.

Only just taken delivery of the onix and so far so good! I haven't had the lid off yet but will do in due course to inspect the caps etc.

I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for a pair of second hand speakers now, but haven't got a clue! This is my first foray into the vintage hifi market so suggestions will be most welcome.

nice :) how does the Rega Sound? i bet compared with most digital its a breath of fresh air

Wonder why they warned you off marantz stuff as my SR4200 receiver is still going strong 9 years on and my marantz CD-56 is older than i am and still works fine even with CD-Rs. Sound quality on the amp isn't at all bad although my luxman is certainly better.

I get the impression that those B&W speakers are obviously lacking in LF since the guy has loudness on and the bass tone control turned up.

New bit of kit, was just fiddling with all the settings at the time :D

Oh yeh, much prefer vinyl! But not just the sound quality, simply clicking a button to play an mp3 seems cold and uninvolving when compared to the delicate handling of vinyl. And not to mention rooting through old LP's in charity shops and record fairs is hours of fun, love it!

Very nice although i see no hovis....

How do you find your sony 5.1 I've been looking into surround sound but the otherhalf has put her foot down and has said it's that sony system or nothing :(

Over the moon with it Bud. I have same problem with the wife ruling " NO MORE BLOODY AMPS, SPEAKERS, STANDS CABLES etc"

Also, we have a 2 year old who's room is above the lounge so my thought process was:

- Space saving
- Due to daughter, won't be able blast it every night of the week so not worth going the top quality separates route for how often I'll use it
- Everything else AV is Sony Bravia with Bravia Sync so set up will be a breeze.
- Wall mountable and TINY (Brackets inc) so no stands for daughter to knock over.

The sound is FANTASTIC from such small satellites providing you follow recommendations of sub placement. It has main driver in the bottom and another on top (which makes up the bass & mid shortfall of the satellites PERFECTLY when placed correctly.

Also....using "Night Mode" disables the main bottom sub and directs Bass & Mid to the smaller "top sub" meaning u still get the bass sound but without the plaster shaking thumps. This is FANTASTIC for me as I can now have surround every night without waking the nipper up :)

Only minor is HDMI sound ALWAYS takes presidence over optical/ digital Coax so SKY HD DD 5.1 is still a ball ache. I'm just piping SKY through HDMI in 2.0 and using Dolby Digital Pro-Logic II feature to 'create' 5.1. Cannot believe Sky's brand new boxes are still using HDMI 1.1 (2 channel only)....absolute disgrace!

So, in summary mate, if space/ wife are an issue and you want great sound with little hassle, I have no problems recommending. OBVIOUSLY for sub £500 you could source a decent £200 sony/ Onkyo amp and a good set of speakers for £300 and get much better sound but your back to loads more kit and cable and the wrath of the wife :D Bear in mid that the amp built into the sub on this system is akin to those Sony's you'd seen in AV dealers at round £150 - £200. This is MUCH better than the bluray & 5.1 bundles you see fro around £299.

Shame you're miles away or you could have called round for a demo. Worth a look in your local sony centre to see if they have one. Our stafford branch are selling at £500 down to £299 now. Pretty sure they were around £600 when they launched last year.

Thanks for the opinion Andy, I'll definitely have a look into them. Would love full size but considering I've 3 sets of stand mounts, one set of floor standers and a set of ae 2.1's in a 2 bed flat the other half has put her foot down firmly :p

Love the linn by the way.

Cheers bud :)

Manual for the Sony HT-IS100 is here by the way:

Defo worth a look into bud :) As mentioned I'm sure you could easily get better sound for the money going the custom/ separates route, but pretty sure you'll not find anything this size that sounds this good :)

Finally as set up as it can be -

Yamaha RX-V3900 amp, feeding into my ancient Panasonic TH37PX600, with Sky HD+, HTPC, Xbox 360, PS3, and main PC hidden off pic all as inputs. Front three speakers are PMC DB1i, and PMC DB1MCi centre. Rears are still my old Mission 77's and surround presense are M7DS. Sub, hidden under the right side Blok rack is a BK XLS200.

Can just about see the tops of two custom Blok AV racks, and the stand the TV stands on was delivered by Chunky Monkey yesterday.

I have recently upgraded my sound set up and have replaced my old Q acoustic set up with a full Quad set up instead. Quad 11l2's at the front, a Quad L2 centre speaker and a pair of Quad lites at the rear. In the AV cabinet I now have a HTPC with XBMC for film playback, a PS3, and in my bedroom a couple of HP microserver's with 10TB of storage each. In all 20TB of storage. I also have a Harmony One for control of everything.

very nice Phil.. I am so pleased I got my Microserver added to the home network, its really an essential bit of kit for me now.

Do you have a TV somewhere or are you just using the PJ for everything?

what software do you use to extract blureray? and do you just keep the core movie?

Yeah the micro servers have been a great purchase. And after the rebate they are a complete steal. I still have 10TB of space left and that’s with 200 Blu-ray rips on there and full rips of the 10 Band of Brothers episodes. Hopefully by the time they are full, the new 4TB drives will be more economical.

The PJ downstairs is for films and gaming only. There is a TV upstairs in the living room which has sky for any TV viewing. I love my projector but could never have it just on its own for day to day viewing. It feels more special when I just use the projector for films and some gaming with my mates :D

I rip my blu-rays with a program called makemkv. Its free whilst in beta, which it has been for well over a year lol. And it allows you to rip just the film with no loss in quality. The film itself is a 1:1 copy and it also allows you to select which audio source and subtitles you wish to keep. I usually keep the English subs and the HD audio track.

I have never actually looked at the extras and am only interested in the film itself. So I find this the perfect set up. The rips themselves can be quite big which is why I need so much storage. Avatar itself is a 41GB file.

Ive been looking at getting a NAS but after seeing your micro server then seeing that there is a £100 rebate ive had to order one :)

Yeah its probably the best value NAS/server you can have after you claim the rebate. Its also very versatile in the sense you can have what ever OS you want on it, and also the fact it can hold 5 drives with ease, and even 6 if you know how.
