Post Your Home Cine & HiFi Kit...

Just so we're clear, its a Subwoofer not a speaker :p

I know it's a subwoofer. It's still a diaphragm and what is a diaphragm? A speaker/bass speaker.

And yes most subs (or higher end ones) come in DF (Down Firing) or the more typical FF (Front Firing) way. They produce slightly different effects that can be more or less beneficial depending on the shape of your room etc

I wonder how good the low frequency effects are on it, say 30Hz…

Also DF is usually for when you don't have neighbours to worry about ;)

Interesting… Can it be done with any sub thats not down firing with custom feet. Or is it sub specific? Or even some modification to send it downwards? Or will it likely harm it…

You may not be able to help here but why did you go for the Gemini over the xls200? I'm looking into a bk sub but have no idea which one I want to go for.
Was it's just the price that swung you? How big is your room?

I'm not into massive bass so figured the lower powered Gemini would suit me better. I wanted something to rumble when needed but not blow the doors off.

I have the sub set to half way on the gain and right down on my amp and it is still very powerful and it is miles better than the q acoustics I had before. Its very responsive.

A DF sub can have the same bass output as a front firing sub, there is nothing special or different about them. From what I have read there isn't really a big difference either, it's more personal preference in which look you prefer. BK tend to offer most of their subs in either configuration.

Yes, you could add feet to a front firing sub and use it as down firing, as long as there is enough clearance so that at full extension it doesn't hit the floor.

It might be quite handy as a safety aspect. I have one really old subwoofer where the cover is only fabric. My dog is always going near it throwing his toys. With enough force you could stretch the fabric and hit/puncture the speaker.

Probably worth having a look here for more info, tend to get good advice on there: http://www.avforums.com/forums/subwoofers.127/

Also, with regards to the speaker/sub debate, I wasn't insulting you but why call it that when it has a specifically designed name to differentiate it from other 'speakers':p;)

No insult taken and cheers by the way.

Trying to somehow find a way to make it a little deeper even although my bass is set low without losing bass and sitting up on rubber pads. I love a rich bass rather than a thundery bass.

I'd be interested in some pics! :D

OK, a bit cheeky, but here is my neighbours setup for a bit of inspiration..

Pair of Linn Klimax 350A's,
Linn Sekrit surrounds,
Linn Exotik pre-amp
Linn Majik DS network streamer
Mac based media server,
4x3m screen..

Sounds awesome and you don't miss the centre or sub with these speakers at all.

if people object please say and ill remove the pics.

Setup above is beautiful. Can only hope to get something looking that nice and refined when mines all done!

Have you run any room correction software or done the crawling around on your knee's trick to find if the bass is disappearing into a corner etc which would mean trying the sub in a few positions?

Although set to low i'm not sure how much you could gain, unless if the sub is placed badly you could move it somewhere else where you could turn it up so you could get the extra effect but because of the new position it doesn't travel as far? :p

So many things to try, as suggested checkout that forum and just read back a few pages am sure you will find someone asking the same question and the answers there will be much better than mine.

It is a duplex penthouse apartment which used to have a double height living room, so the ceiling and wall where the PJ and screen were installed are newly constructed, as is the floor.. hence he has very tidy installation and cable management, even though each speaker has XLR and power cables, this all runs through the floor.
The media server is behind the PJ wall in a cupboard under the stairs.

No where near as nice as all your stuff. Still living at home in a Tudor house with wonky walls and floors, and pretty sure I'm not square on with the TV. Mount is level bust sadly wall not completely vertical lol. But i thought I'd show off my gear.

My new Sony STR-DN1040 Love it!

It's a bit of a waste actually, bought it to hide it all but it's only got the vm cable and 8 gang tower extension lead. All the cables behind the tv are just held together with velcro cable ties, not neat but out of view.

haha what can you do. It would play havoc with my OCD but I am sure it looks just fine with the lights off :)

It's not too bad when i pull it out at 60 degrees to watch it while playing games etc. Or it's kinda OK when i put it completely flat against the wall. Will look forward to buying a house with flat and straight walls.
