Post Your Home Cine & HiFi Kit...

please excuse the crappy cameraphone picture - the batteries on my digital always run out at the wrong time!!!

the tv is a panasonic 42" px80 plasma. just using the built-in freeview at the moment, picture quality is excellent.

the htpc is quite modest:

+ gigabyte ga-g33m-ds2r motherboard
+ intel e4500 2.2ghz core 2 duo cpu
+ arctic cooling alpine 7 pro
+ ocuk 4gb ddr2 800mhz memory
+ ati radeon hd2400 graphics card
+ 160gb and 1tb samsung hard drives
+ samsung dvd-rw drive

this is connected to the tv via hdmi using one of the dvi->hdmi adaptors available for the graphics card. it is passing both video and audio.

would, eventually, like to get the internals housed within a proper htpc case, but it's fine as it is for the time being.

oh, and i'm running xp + mediaportal as the front-end, all controlled via a media centre remote.

What settings are you using for the PX80? Im just using the HDTVTest recommended settings. Seemed dull at first, but now look really good.

Planet Earth blu-ray on Ocean Deep episode looked amazing. Blacks were really good even during the day and looked even better with the curtains closed.

i use the HDtest settings but i've knocked the sharpness up one as it improves text and theres less blur on the image. This is noticeable on PS3 menu's

Yea i did the same. HDTVTest's sharpness for HD is 0. Kept it at 1 for both HD and SD cause it was annoying having to constantly grab the Panasonic remote and change it. Looks great anyway.

Also, should i turn the BD DVD 24hz setting to "ON" or keep it at "AUTOMATIC"? And what do you have the RGB setting at? Mines on "Limited" atm.

Cheers!

I use RGB Limited and Automatic for 24Hz

Ye probably.

BTW, with RGB set on full, you get "crushed black levels". Limited is better.

I see, thanks for the tip! Contrast controls the black level doesn't it? So raising it would make the blacks grey and lowering it would make the picture too dark right?

Probably cause i was watching it in daylight, but some scenes in Planet Earth - Ocean Deep looked a bit grey. But im guessing it was caused by the reflection in of the light in the TV, cause when i closed the curtains it improved a lot.

Ill try those out.

Only thing that annoys me is there is a buzz from the tv. More so on brighter scenes, but seems more audible today. Does it get worse if the tv has been on a lot?

Some new and some old...

this is normal so don't be worried. It happens a lot on bright/white scenes. Just the way plasmas are.
Re seating it again or loosening the screws on the stand at the back of the tv helps to reduce it

I've gone down the Media PC route for Blu-ray and HD-DVD with the following kit.

Sony KDL40-V3000 LCD TV
Alphason designs stand
Antec NSK2480 case
Gigabyte 780G DS2H motherboard
AMD 5050e processor
LG Combo BR/HDDVD drive
500GB HDD
Keysonic wireless Keyboard/Mousepad
Compro E700 TV card
Trust Vista MCE remote

Connected via HDMI in simple stereo at the moment, but I have a Videologic Digitheatre 5.1 system in the loft which I intend to bring out of retirement until I can get something better.

Which brings me to my question.... ;)

Q) I'd like a surround sound system in black to match the TV, Stand and Media PC case. Not sure on what is a reasonable budget, but I'm looking for entry level decent stuff I think. Just the speakers and amp, no need for a player or anything like that. Recommendations?
