post your Linux Rig's specs. pointlessly powerful or amusingly weak ?

ArchLinux with XFCE
-Intel E2140 @ 2.6GHz (from memory, aren't many Linux tools that tell you actual speed :p)

Try this:

Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep MHz

Currently I have Ubuntu 11.10 on my Linux pc - it's an old Packard Bell I think that used to have Vista on it.

- Replaced the original case with an original Antec Sonata
- Has a new psu (Earthwatts 430W I think)
- Memory - 4gb ddr2 (not sure on speed)
- Generic unbranded motherboard (possibly Asus)
- Q8200 which runs @ 2.4Ghz & 2Ghz (no other lower power saving frequencies as far as I can tell)
- Sapphire ATI HD5670 Ultimate 1GB GDDR5 (fanless)

I use it for some gaming though the ati card performed better in Vista. Other than that performs much better with Linux on it :)

Did have Gentoo on my main pc but ran into several issues, not to mention I needed Word & Powerpoint for specific projects that OpenOffice didn't quite match (I really tried!!). At some point I'm going to build a super fast super efficient super low power Linux box as a general desktop & gaming machine which will also serve media files :)

I have mine running in a VM on a HP Microserver

AMD Athlon II NEO N36L 1.3 GHz
8GB RAM (2gb assigned to VM)
1 x100gb Virtual disk size

You guys will hate me though as I only use it as a time machine capsule :(

Out of interest - what flavour are you running to create the time capsule?

we don't hate you :)

it's a slight cheat in a way because it's a VM I suppose

I'm surprised that no one as come up with a mini system/really ancient laptop running Tiny Core ;)

I've scaled back on my home network and just run the minimum....

HTPC/NAS/Terminal Server/Windows 2008 Virtualised

Ubuntu 10.10 32bit stock PAE kernel // 8 gig // SU2300 // 5 TB

Old pentiums pxe boot as thin clients

BG45 Laptop

Pingeee 11.04 // 3 gig // T2390 upgraded to T8100 // 60gig Agility 3

This thing flies and is as smooth as a mac. Compositing works great and it's the machine I 'prefer' to use

Bart2 - Backup Server

Backup server was running an installation RedHat 6.2 (zoot) carried from another machine :D but I got tired of compiling stuff and the gcc version was so old that recent software failed too much. Now running Ubuntu LTS

1.5 gig // Athlon XP2500+ // 3 TB

-------
The big machines run Windows I'm afraid

You didn't fancy the 24 SSD raid 60 array then.:D

How do you cool that monster? Is it noisy?
The majority of my storage is handled centrally, so I can't really impact that :p

It's cooled by a lot of fans - it's in a supermicro server case. They're very loud and due to not currently having power a convenient place, the back of the case points almost directly at my face.
If you're doing NGS assembly you may need more memory, i.e. cortex/velvet.
This is indeed for HTS data analysis, but with a much more specific purpose then a generic assembly with velvet or the like. I'm probably going to have to write a custom program to do what I want and at the moment, I'm not sure about memory - I probably won't actually need most of what I have. If I do go down that line, then extra RAM is a definite possibility, though.

I currently have ubuntu 11.10 running on this machine, which is a core2duo, 2gb ram with a couple of hd's.

I really love Crunchbang though, it's running on my old Fujitsu laptop, 1.5 celeron, 512mb ram, up and running with no programs open it's using 76mb ram :)

My work workstation is a bit stupid, the company just bought them not knowing what they were buying, it has 5 grand of graphics cards (2x quadros) and I'm a backend Java dev!

Ubuntu 11.10 64
Dual x2 3ghz quad xeons
12gb ecc ram
2x nv quadro 5000 gfx cards
2x 360gb SAS 15k drives in raid0

Oh yeah I have 3x 24" monitors too but can on use 2 because I can't get unity to use all 3 on 2 gfx cards.

I'm surprised your company is still in business.

Who the hell uses 15k drives in a workstation as well? And Unity...ugh, from the limited amount of time I have spent with that it looks horrible?

Sorry..I should add to the thread...I use Fedora 15 on a 5 year old POS at work that was underpowered when it was new. At home I have a 2.5 year old Atom based HTPC running Xubuntu (that is still fine for fileserver / XBMC 720P / download box duties!) and a Microserver running Debian 6 / Xen. All of them fairly underpowered.

Luckily none of them are my machine of choice!
